Some attempts at drawing Clint Eastwood, i am so bad at faces, I lost my nack for them.

I think during my senior year at school, i got more concerned with speed thatn quality, so i lost alot of my skills at shading and details becuase of not practicing them.

During my Visual Language class we were discussing some photographs taken by my fellow students and a silhoutte (spelling? haha) stood out to me, added a hand, some wierd quote from our discussion as well.

'It is being uneducated, art makes culture and culture is the most important thing in the world." somthing like that, we talk fast haha.

Due to my dissatisfaction of my clint eastwood attempts, i followed them up with a study on the structure of the head, found a nice page and followed it, i think it may have helped a bit.

K Cool, i took some photos of my bigger sketches ( done on newsprint) from my drawing class.

Here is the first classes work, atleast my better stuff, would it be useful if i posted everything so you can see what my bad shtuff is? i think that would make it easier to crit.

This is also my first ever figure drawing class, i have never had a model before ;x

but i liked it!

Hey jdeegz, thanks for stopping by my book. I can see some improvement already in this short time. Keep up the figure drawing, it's the best way to improve. If you want some good ideas/anatomy to help your figures, try out Bridgeman's Complete Guide to Drawing From Life, or Andrew Loomis' books. Bridgeman should be easy to find, and loomis can be found online. Always make sure to break things into simple shapes when drawing, and focus on proportion and accuracy before doing detail (such as the contour or value). I look forward to seeing your progress! Keep it up.

jdeegz
October 14th, 2006, 12:30 AM
man i wish i had a better way to get stuff on here =\ im just using a camera and taking a picture, the paper is white, but comes out orangy so i gotta fiddle with photoshop alot. anyways, i think this is my favorite atm, whatcha think?

Fishspawn
October 15th, 2006, 02:03 AM
The faces are looking good. Torso looks too stylized. You should know the ribcage and pelvis (or at least simplified versions for now) and how the muscles lay on top of them like fleshy drapery. With regards to hands, try to learn the anatomy and construct from simple shapes, although it mostly just takes doing them over and over.

About the camera, you just have to get better at taking the pictures, and try to have as much light as possible (sunlight, lamps, flash from camera). That's the only way i can figure out. Still usually takes messing around in PS.

Keep it daily, thats the best way to improve.

jdeegz
October 15th, 2006, 12:24 PM
haha thanks, im trying to keep it daily but between partying and allready assigned homework my time is tight, but really this community is really inspiring me to draw, i feel way more compfortable than when i had started sketching!

October 15th, 2006, 07:14 PM
Hey, i got these books, Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing From Life, and Loomis' Figure Drawing for All it's Worth. These two books are awesome, thank you so much for reccommending them.

i did a few Loomis works. the first one i copied and and practiced, the 2nd is all form my mind except for the figure on the left. i love this way of drawing the human form its really effective of showing motion and balance.

I'm trying to get my pencil strokes to be more fluent instead of what loomis says as "Petting" the lines which i am used to doing.

October 15th, 2006, 08:15 PM
hey man, keep it up, with hard practice you can get anywhere!!

it's good that you are noticing your mistakes in that last piece. Remember what you dislike and like about your work, that's the key to improvement!!

jdeegz
October 17th, 2006, 01:42 PM
yeah i always look for my mistakes and learn from them, its the bestest way!

jdeegz
October 17th, 2006, 02:14 PM
Hey yo, i had some ideas for a bigger composition so i sketched them out, one is a female being looked at by her capturer or somthing, its not fully developed haha. and the second is a man on the ground being stuck by another man wielding some type of weapon. lemmie know what you think!

jdeegz
October 17th, 2006, 02:21 PM
I just wanted to post some digital painting i did to see what some reactions would be, the first one is a picture of a beast in an alley way, i think i am going to continue working on that some time i have free work.

What's up jDeegz
Thanks for visiting my sketchbook!
You're coming along quite nicely, it seems. Keep it up. Draw lots of live people! It's ridiculously helpful, and it never stops being a goo idea.
I especially like that one face near the top, right under that chick's portrait sketch, that's all grainy and robert-crumb-ish in style. I'd like to see it up close, actually.

Yo. Keep up the anatomy studies, they are looking good. When digipainting, use the biggest brush possible for each area, only use small brushes when you have to. Do as much life drawing as possible, anywhere you can! Keep it up.

Discoskull
October 25th, 2006, 10:36 AM
Keep it up! You were asking about connecting heads to bodies - the jaw connects halfway to the back of the head, right below the ears, and two bigh neck muscles decend from there and connect at either side of the "v" of the collarbone.
When the head is divided by thirds, the brow and top of the ears are at the top line, and the bottom of the nose and ends of the jaw are at the second line. Get an anatomy book and draw from life, oh yes.
And yes, I'm making due with a mouse, as I don't have a pad. I usually do cell shading with the laso tool (comic style)...
Anyway, keep posting

jdeegz
October 25th, 2006, 11:30 AM

Yo. Drawing from statues is a good way to learn - try big charcoal drawings, you can really get good values that way. Keep studying loomis and bridgeman, they are always good for you. Your studies keep looking better, just make sure to apply that new knowledge to your other sketches, always be thinking while you draw. Keep it up.

November 1st, 2006, 07:15 PM
thanks for popping by my sketchbook! I can see a definite steady improvement in drawing from life here, but as mentioned in the last post you need to practice that as much as possible so that you can learn elements needed for drawing from your head!
keep it up

some statue drawings. now at my school we did almost nothing other than acylic paint and graphite so charcoal is pretty much a forieng substance in my hands. gota some learing to do me thinks ;x

another statue, im really happy having the ability to go to the museum of fine arts for free with only a 5 minute walk aswell :)

last one is an idea i sketched out, the middle man is holding his helmet in his right hand and it came out kinda wierd looking, i think it shows to much palm.

hi jdeegz,

nice start on your book. you are definately on the right track by doing lots of sketching and foundational exercises at this point.

i suggest you try varying up your subject matter with some objects/still lifes and landscapes. it's great to study anatomy, but it's also very difficult before you've gotten much practice rendering simple shapes. household objects like fruit and dishes make for very clean gemoetric shapes.

keeeeeep sketching and you'll get there :)

jdeegz
November 3rd, 2006, 02:00 PM
charcoal! thanks for the replies guys. I still have alot of trouble drawing people from my immagination, i always screw up the joined =\ gotta draw more, must! draw more!

Beelow
November 4th, 2006, 12:09 AM
Nice progress dude. Keep going with the sketches. Try seeing those shapes. Do not draw what you think you see, see what your drawing. What I mean by that is observe the model or what your drawing and not looking at the paper too much. Hope that helps a little. Thanx for stopping by my sketchbook dude! XD

Hey, thanks for checking up on me again :) I see you've already improved much with charcoal, but here are some tips to using it very effectively. The bigger you work, the easier it is to make charcoal stuff look prettier. Don't be afraid to smear a soft charcoal (like vine, which is easily erased) all over the paper and then erase out lights, while pushing darks with more concentrated stuff. Learn to use the side of square charcoal and you can get some very expressive lines - vary the pressure on one side vs the other for gradients, twist it to vary line width, etc.

The advice about simple shapes and focusing on what you're drawing is very important. Knowing your medium is nice, but knowing how to analyze and break down anything into simple shapes, as well as knowing how to render simple shapes perfectly, makes you a master.

I like the sketch of the horse, i think over all you've improved a lot since i last visited, keep it up!

jdeegz
November 10th, 2006, 05:51 PM
is there a way you guys can show me what you mean by seeing shapes? i know its a hard thing to show but i dont really understand what to look for when you say that =\ maybe show two pictures, one of a shape seen object and one not? i dont know hahaha

Fishspawn
November 12th, 2006, 01:43 AM
Heres a silly tutorial i made to try and show you what i mean. Take the figure, you want to put light on it from the right. So you pick simple shapes, like cubes, cylinders, cones, and spheres, and use them to represent parts of the figure. Its easy to find how the light effects these, so then you have accurate and easy lighting. Note that you dont have to use the same shapes for the same parts each time, you can use different ones depending on how you want it lit. Get Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters and Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters by Robert Beverly Hale. He explains it much better than I.

November 14th, 2006, 12:35 AM
hey, ive got an Art history final in which i am doing a piece, not sur eif i should paint or just draw it, then write a short paper on it. earlier in the semester we all chose a work of art from the MFA and we have written two papers on it, now we have the third along with a project.

i chose this piece.
Cuirassed Torso (http://www.mfa.org/collections/search_art.asp?recview=true&id=151342&coll_keywords=domitian&coll_accession=&coll_name=&coll_artist=&coll_place=&coll_medium=&coll_culture=&coll_classification=&coll_credit=&coll_provenance=&coll_location=&coll_has_images=&coll_on_view=&coll_sort=1&coll_sort_order=1&coll_package=0&coll_start=1)

and now this is my sketch, i made it a statue infront of a coliseum type building the man on the left is feeling it and there is a woman walking in front of him a small distance off.

i think my biggest problem at this moment is his left foot, it seems.. wrong, i dont know. if you guys can point out anything else please please let me know i really want this to be great :)

hey, glad you're updating again. Hardest part about drawing is sitting down and doing it, and then to keep doing it when you get frustrated (which is pretty much inevitable when you get the first step down). Looks like your figures are getting better proportions etc. For things like the elephant - check out some real elephants - you can't actually see their eyes because they have huge eyelashes and deep eye sockets. Their noses and faces are covered in wrinkles - which is a good excuse to show form with "wireframe" lines. Dogs are looking good. I really like the two paintings that make up one picture.

Biggest crit is your tendency to not post for a month and then post 5 times in one day. I'd rather see a drawing a day, even a crap sketch, than not see anything for months and then get some good stuff. Mix it up, keep it consistant. Looking forward to more.

later.

Fishspawn
January 10th, 2007, 01:01 AM
Yay. I think the digi has promise but it looks like you're rushing it. It would be smarter to block in the whole pose first, making sure it's balanced and proportioned correctly, before putting in any color or details like the folds on the clothing. From what i can see of the character i like him, and you did a great job on that hand, that's a tricky hand pose to do. Good luck posting every day until the weekend and after your return, that daily commitment, if held, will yield huge dividends in the future.

I think some of the scribles on the outside of the page distract my eye a little because it looks like detail, but then it's not, so you might want to rework those areas with bigger brushes or smoother transitions - or just actually put in detail! here is an illustration i did.

it is a facility in which scientists are mixing two versions of ebola with the common cold to make a bio weapon. They are testing it on people to get exact reactions, rather than using monkeys. The victim that was infected with a strain of Ebola Reston that was geneticly engineered to effect humans has escaped. Ebola Reston was found in Reston, VA. It is a strain of Ebola that can infect via airborn allergines, originally harmless to humans. So if you see somone wandering the streets spewing out thier melted insides, run as fast as you can away, and hold your breath!

Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. You're improving steadily. More drawing from life will help. I noticed on those last batch of self portraits and the sketches of the towel and backpack it says you did them very quickly. At this point I think it would be better for you to take your time drawing these, so you can understand what you're drawing and why it looks the way it does. Once you understand how the forms work you'll be able to draw them faster, and more accurately.

I enjoy the zombies quite a bit, especially the chicks in the flashlight beam.
"Shoot them/ Get out" heh
I'm no expert at wacom (at all), but I'd say use bigger brushes, and use "undercoats" or whatever they're called (separate layer, multiplied, of a color at 40% or whatever, to give the picture an over all tone).

That skull owns, and I quite like this last one...pretty strange.

Is it going to be a dome with a city inside of it? Or an artificial habitat? Or a gigantic planet rising over the horizon?

It's a good start, in any case; keep addin' them layers.
Oh, and perhaps the brushes on the moon/dome could enhance their spherical natures even more; there are a couple strokes that are flattening them out a bit.

Oh yeah, and thanks for pointing out that type-o in my comic ;)

All right! Doomchamp is sweet. If i were you i'd scrap the harrison ford study, do a bunch of quick studies of him from different angles / with different expressions, and then do a new paint of him. I like the pink flowers against black - i think that would look great if you blended the pink so that the flowers looked soft. (obviously in a different copy because it looks great as is) Improvement! Keep posting.

Out with the old, shit show that is my sketchbook. On with the new kick ass drawings and renderings. I'm going to be doing a lot of "draw what you see" stuff because I need to build up my "visual vocabulary" as an industrial designer! So i got some new ideas, new way to get my pieces into the computer - using my roommates scanner (sweet!) - and a new attitude about drawing!

So here I ripped the first one from NoShadow, who rocks, check him out here if you havn't already. http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=63786

The other two are concepts for helmets that soldiers may be using in 10-20 years, still in the works but they are almost done. I am planning to design an entire suit including clothes, weapons, armor, and information devices. The way I am doing this is making everything practical, no Halo or Gears of War type armor because it's bulky and have numerous limitations. I am taking account to all of the things that are harmful to a soldier like gas weapons (which will be the primary weapon in a few years because it is so effective), bullets (duh), and various other things. This should be fun!

I have to agree with Fishspawn,
that would be the BEST way to go about it, but, if you don't want to do that just re-doing the project from scratch and being sure you use guidelines along with what you have already learned should tie it together.
Lets see what you can do.

So, i did numerous Harrison Ford sketches like you guys suggested, they are pretty bad, but not aweful haha, still fun to do :) they were in pencil and im having trouble scanning them in. I may just go over them in pen and try to make corrections, the 2nd look sort of thing.

Here are the lillies updated and a face...

Fishspawn
September 15th, 2007, 11:42 AM
Man i thought i posted after the helmets. Anyway they are looking good. I think you could go even simpler and more beautiful with the flowers. I dont think they need that much black (they didn't have it before...) and i think the transition from white to pink could be better. Face is looking good but he has no top/back of his head. Well he does but its really tiny. Can't wait to see those harrison ford sketches!

k, so i sorta got the scanner thing workin, not sure. so im workin on gettin all my stuff on the comp. i've been drawing like 8 pages a day haha. i got nothin else to do and i want to rule!
so here are pen sketches, just cuase i gotta get used to it fro ID.
i drew girls.. i never knew what they were before lastnight. theyre pretty!

so in this batch is an idea for my moon planet thingy that i painted a while back, cuase that picture stinks. dunno what you guys like it for! maybe you'r just sayin it to make me actually do somthing, haha. thanks :)

2nd one is a guy, i want him to be leaning on a tree, gotta keep working on the weight, i cant seem to get the anatomy right, i might have one of my roommates pose for a second hehe.

the last few are pictures of girls i found online, bodies are allright, but the heads were terrible, so i stared drawing them and the shoulders. i found that less is more when it comes to faces and pens. i think the outline of a face is the hardest thing for me, they always look man-ish.

k ill try scanning the harrison ford pics now, later!

Hey man I think you're really starting to capture Harrison's crazy facial expressions - keep doing those studies! For girls i'd reccomend staying away from online photos like that - you want to learn how to draw real girls. Usually the best reference (although of course i reccomend drawing from life) is in artistic anatomy books or on photography sites like pro.corbis.com. Faces are tough - just do tons of them. You're right that "less is more" - i read a study that attractiveness was largely based on smoothness of the skin, so you want to subtly hint at things when trying to draw good looking people. However, you should probably not worry about that at this point and just focus on drawing in the structure underneath and all that good junk. Bah i'm in a rant mood this morning, gotta go draw!

I see you drawing circles and lines before you sketch but i have no idea what they're for. They are supposed to map out the skull and jaw so that you can accurately measure proportions and imitate a 3d form. Your sketches have no skulls so they can't look like Harrison because he has a skull. It would be better to be thinking of skulls and not put down any preliminary lines than to put down lines that have no meaning or purpose.

Keep putting in the foot work but put in a little more thinking while you do it ;)

(top line is eyebrows, middle is nose. These are proportions from Ron Lemen's tutorial: http://www.anticz.com/heads.htm)

Great updatesmanship you've got going on.

That cat-ape in the rain/shadow is quite awesome, I must say. It pops immediately, which is fun to do with lots of black.

Keep it up with the facial/head studies, too; the improvement is steady - so keep doing them!
And that scratchy-ish line work in the last post - particularly on the graph paper - I enjoy where that's going.

Like I said - keep it up! And draw more figures, too - do 4-5 a day, more if you can (I need to take my own advice, methinks).

The first 3 images of post 112 are my favorite; especially that one male body, and the whatever-the-hell-it-is just below the rhinos; it's good that it's convincing, even when I don't know what it is :)

I see skulls! Awesome. Play with the light side vs the shadow side more - make sure that the light is clearly defined (and if it's not because you're using photos... well thats one of the reasons why I don't like using photos.) The guy on the right there is awesome - i can really see the dimensions of his face. The one on the left is less clearly defined with value and it looks like his cheek is pushing an inch into his face when he's really just smirking. (or grimacing or whatever it should be called). Anyway... awesome progress, I can really tell you're learning and expirimenting!

I can see that your progress through out your post and believe me your heading in the right direction. Form is a definitely important thing to lock down in your art but first if you don't mind me saying that you should first worry about your construction. Your sketches will become freaking amazing if you were to first master your line quality, Have confidence and let those lines flow through the silhouette. To much of one thing can't be good. Man, I'm telling you, If you could make one line tell the story of a hundred, your well on your way to greatness, I struggled with that too, and still do. Then once you got that lock that down worry about form and Proportion, so on and so forth. Thanks for your feedback on my stuff, I really need to engage in the story element.

Hey man, I really like the vines/tree/rock thing. With your paints you should be thinking much much simpler. Don't try to define muscle! Just think of the blocks, cylindrical shapes and spheres that make up the figure and start there. Make sure you have a light side and a dark side and all of your shadows are accurate. You should only go into detail (muscles, folds on clothing, etc) because you have nothing else to do. Then it doesn't take much. The guy's head is the most clearly defined thing but you could push the dark side of it a little darker. Keep up the good work, there's improvement with every post!

hey man great work here your diligence is admirable keep it up
some things to keep on eye on,
-line quality, make sure that your lines are solid and less sketchy, it is ok to have sketchy lines at the beginning but just make sure you clean it up a bit by the time you are done
-shading, make sure when you shade that you arent just shading to shade make sure that your shading adds to the form and shape of the object dont just shade to shade, and also dont just scratch in the darks with lines , rather block in the form with a thick part of the lead so that it is all unified, also so the texture isnt wack

but ya nice work keep it up and ill see you around

I'm digging the vehicle designs. You've got quite a grip on it, and you're working it. It coos with satisfaction.
Your perspective skills are progressing quite nicely; I'm envious. Keep going with it. The streamlined jet-car things in 154 are rocking. Makes me wish I'd taken some industrial design classes.
Something seems a tidbit off with this last guy perspective-wise, but all it needs is some cleanup, and it's still a WIP anyway.
I like where you're going with the fighter jet, too; makes me want to see more color / painting.

And keep posting characters to ride around in your vehicles and kill things!
The new ones on the last page are really cool ideas.

Razor bits are nice and streamlined, but the black objects (like the plugs/cords) get lost with the black halo.

deegz,
you've got some cool ideas happening on here, for your mech suit dude, have you thought about using a whiteout pen with your marker renderings to punch up the "bling" on the metal surfaces? its a tech. learned in college and its useful for the ID stuff as well. kudos on the progression with the paintings as well,

Hey, you asked me how you to from grayscale to full value, and color it without repainting. So...earlier I usualy built forms with details ( after that I added layers colur, multiply, color dodge, overlay), and sometimes I lost it, so in recent jobs I draw with no particularity, try to work harder with colours.

erro.
cant not post in the month of april, that'd be soo bad.
so what have i been up too?
well, not much really, i've been relaxing before the storm that we all know as finals. I've done some sketchings, lots of thinking, exercising. Most importantly, I've been looking for a summer job to bring in the rent money. Yeah, fun i guess.

the other day, wedensday, my Human Factors class to a trip to the Natick Soldier Center RDE&C - its basically a relativly small military base where they conceptualize, develop, and test the products soldiers are given to take into theatre. It is basically my dream job, and i got to visit it, amazing day. We got to see the new fabric they are using for the military suits, 'universal camo' we got to go to the biomechanices room. this place rocked, they have all these sensors and a work out area, what they do is equip soldiers with thier new gear, and they perform exercises and rate... everything from the preasure on your heel when you step down, to your breathing. I got to run around with a 40 lb kevlar and carbon fiber vest with a 40 lb backpack. It was pretty sick, i couldnt imagine wearing the 120 lb backpack the marines use! THEN there was the3-d anthropometric scanning room, where a person suits up in spandex, stands on this stage, and four scanners go up and down the body, and the image it captures is sooo life like its scary! they're in the process of developing a 'video game' to simulate doing chores while being shot at using the unreal tournament engine haha. okay i could go on for ever about this place, it's so fking awesome and im applying for an possible internship i can there!

k so i got some sketches of random shit, mostly done in classes that bore the shit out of me :P then i did some random color....things testing complementary colors and how they can act as shadows and high lights. ima do some more, i can see it being very beneficial learning these so they stick in my head.

thanks for visitin! dont forget to leave a comment!

K, here's a biggy!

So i've been chillin, keepin busy.

working on some webdesign, can be viewed at www.dsglass.org
It is one of my co-worker's portfolio, she is a Glass Major here at Mass Art, and graduated two years ago...maybe?

Been thinking, but not really doing anything for the Deep event going on here. I found it annoyingly vague, and hard to work for.

I have uploaded my the boards I used for my presentation for my final reviews onto my FTP. They are large images, and currently are unworked for viewing on the web, but soon i will have a written presentation that works with the images so they can go on my online portfolio.
You can view them here
The Cat tower (http://babel.massart.edu/~jdegruttola/random/cattowerlayout.jpg)
The Water Pitcher (http://babel.massart.edu/~jdegruttola/random/waterpitcherlayout.jpg)
The Norelco Razor (http://babel.massart.edu/~jdegruttola/random/razorlayout.jpg)
My Service Idea (http://babel.massart.edu/~jdegruttola/random/servicelayout.jpg)

Okay, so here are some drawings, some paintings, I am working on my discipline, and Painting 1 / 2 small still lives in black&white a day. Hopefully i can keep it up, and also my daily gym routine =D

Enjoy!

Nice stuff in here mate! Just a few points I think you should work on:
You seem to use a lot of straight lines. Nothing wrong with that but try throwing some curves in there. Also be more carefull with your constructions. It seems to me that you get impatient and rush to the details in most of your drawings. I think you should do more drawings from observation and try to understand the overall forms as well as the details. Do more research on common things such as those aircraft and tanks and try to understand how they work and why they're build that way. Having that knowledge will make a big difference when you are coming up with designs. I hope I'm making sense here. Just keep working hard my friend!

i feel like i have not drawn at all this summer, but looking back, i really have done a good chunk of workin'.

currently updating my portfolio with my industrial design work from the school year. I will post it as soon as its done on here.

so I HAVE actually worked on that digi, i 'finished' it, meaning i was mentally finished with the piece so I called it done =D, time to move on!

I am working on a character now, I have noticed he is sort of a mix between a vortigon from half-life , and a prophet from the halo series. But i am going for some sort of being that is very smart, but arrogant and condescending. His species talks through with their minds. I haven't decided if they should have eyes or not. But anyways, i figure i should paint this guy up soon, or at least do some test runs with him on the comp.

I started to think about his companion but haven't uploaded the pictures yet.

So here is a large dump, hopefully it will cover for me not posting in a month, haha.

Great progress on your industrial design sketches :) The last asteroid miner is definitely an improvement over the older sketches, though I'm not entirely sure what you mean with that 'flap jack' sketch.

A couple of general things that might help you:

First of all, line quality can really help to make a drawing more clearer. In some of the sketches in the last and earlier post, you still scratch too much. This makes the drawings harder to read. If you have a complicated contour or line, break it up in it's basic parts (straight, curve to the left, curve to the right etc). Also, line weight can help to give a drawing more depth (for example, lines on the underside of an object or on the shadow side of an object can be heavier then lines on the light side -usually the top- of an object).

Secondly, you need to construct you're shapes a bit better. Even just adding a centreline over your shapes would already help enormously, as it'll help you keeping it symmetrical. More organic shapes usually need some cross-sections to be drawn first before you can draw the contour, because they are often hard to predict. Draw transparent (meaning, draw the lines you can't see at the back of an object too). If you need to add anything to the back of a shape, this will be a great help to make sure it aligns and connects properly to the initial object. Also, never leave lines out if they are right in front of the viewer like in the mixer drawing. You miss the lines that define the edges closest to the viewer, not drawing those lines means you miss an important piece of information for the construction of details like the holes on that edge.

Lastly, when cleaning up your line art like with the little turtle, you also lose a lot of information about shape and proportions (much like the example of the mixer above). This is fine if you plan on bringing that information back with rendering them out, but if you're not planning on fully painting them then leaving out all the sketch/construction lines will make your drawing less clear.

Hope that helps a bit :D

some other crap

im pretty unhappy with my sketching for some reason.

the main crit i got form my teacher was that i need too loosen up, but i am quite loose, looser than most others in the class it seems. I suppose it is because i tighten up near the end of a sketch to focus on details/darkening punch lines.

i cannot draw a head, except this talib kweli, but i drew him about 10 times, at least.

gotta do 15 product design sketches for rendering hw. bunch of em will be rendered on the cintiq, bleh.

Been awhile since I've dropped by! Tons of improvement.
You can draw the shit out of some props and machinery, and your animals are marching right along as well. The screaming cat/ stork sketches are excellent.
What would you suggest if I were needing to get better at industrial design/ machinery? No matter how much I diddle, I always find it hard to wrap my mind around the anatomy of complex machines (in order to get creative with it, I mean).

Keep on trucking - and draw some more humans!

Congrats on being accepted to school in australia ^_^.

On the grunt i think your initial sketch reads the best. It has highlights in the right places and all of the form reads. If you still have that version saved I'd say go back to that and just keep pushing it working that way. Push in some form shadows with a soft round but other than that it looks pretty nice. I think as you worked on it further you got less confident in your ability to render and it got messy and unreadable in the process... I have had that problem myself. Basically at some point i realized that all i have to do is look for each shape and render it out simply. Midtone, core shadow, highlight. All you've gotta do is push those shadows in the first sketch and he'll read better than the latest one.

You're getting some good rendering in these design sketches. Those glasses look nice, and i like the visual trick you've got in that one XD

With faces and bodies i'd say put them into your comfort zone. You're really strong with industrial objects in perspective - so when drawing the head think of it as carved out of a box in perspective. The more you can understand and simplify in your head the easier it will be to draw it out.

Keep working at it, you're getting better faster than you realize. ~~

Your technical drawings are f-ing tight as always. I want to see more of your original designs - robots and body armor and stuff! You are really good at the mechanical/ technologically advanced stuff (but you already knew that). I envy your sense of perspective.

Only thing I'd say atm is keep working on your figures. They're still a bit stiff. More life drawing!.
Sketching 5-10 hands every day really helps out with organic drawings as well (speaking of which, I really need to take my own advice, heh...)

jdungz! jdongz.. jdiggz.

you're so prolific, i had no idea :|! it's fun looking back at your 'ideations' from class. you've inspired me to start compiling my work and making my sketchbook on here. :|

anyway.. i know you probably have heard this a bunch, but you should be more conscientious about your line work. looking back at your thread i noticed the line work on your vehicles is real tight, to me it shows you were thinking a lot about the line. I think it's just when you're dealing with circular shapes that you start getting 'chicken-scratchy'.

it's great to see that you're exploring expressions of the face. i think you can improve many of your drawing techniques by doing self-portraits (and portraits of others). oh, and of course drawing from observation. it sucks you guys don't really have a class in ID that helps you improve drawing skills.. imo, your progress is mostly from your personal work.

oh, and we have the same computer case :d
