It's so harsh working with pens and inks, when there are no room for mistakes, you have very nice things going on here, I might suggest you to ghost line lines and perspective, with either the lightest marker or thin/light pen, and only put down/darken definitive lines once you are sure, otherwise it'll just be messy (correcting). Even if it's a fast sketch. Study Feng Zhu's technique for that. You can always paint over something light making it barely noticeable, but you can never hide something dark. Start light, and work your lines up. This is ofc just my theoretical crit and sounds kinda logical to me, I have no practical experience to back this suggestion up. :D
Like I said, Good stuff. Do what feels the hardest, and be amazed of what you actually can do. :)

That last finished vehicle is absolutely banging. Great dirty cargo vessel kind of feel. Your technical sense of perspective is tight as hell, per usual.

Keep pumping out those figure studies! Do lots of hands - they help wonderfully with organic subject matter, and they make the other bits of human anatomy seem much easier to draw.

I am having a hard time trying to sketch a head with just lines. I was studying loomis, and I think it may have to do with my getting used to sketching on my tablet rather than paper.

I did another portrait, thought with no reference. It looks pretty good to me :) I think her lack of hair detail kind of hurts the piece, I will practice on that.

Hey Iv been meaning to comment in here earlier iv just been a bit busy with work. Just a few thing you might want to consider as your doing your studies. Vary up your mark making as with your brush size ( hard edges, soft edges, and lost edges)and edge quality.
Push your values and have the saturation mach that value depth. Remember to flip your canvas and double check the proportions. Also spend a bit more time with these studies laking maybe 4-5 hours really going through seperat detail passes.

Mat Kaminski
July 27th, 2009, 12:21 PM

jdeegz
July 28th, 2009, 08:18 PM
thx for the comments, just another quick SP for values.
still working on a solid workflow, i think it is coming along. I certainly am much more comfortable with heads than i had previously been and i am learning very much by doing these portraits.

rob, although i would like to mix and match brush styles, i just have a hard time stopping, and looking, and deciding which brush i should pull out. I think that is not just a brush but a problem with my entire paintings. I need to get the patience and knowledge to pull back, and look at the drawing for a minute, and think about the next stroke i make rather than slopping them all on.

I know it's weak but i am still dipping with colour once or twice a picture because i for some reason cannot get an accurate read with values yet. sigh, I'll understand soon i hope :D

See you tommorow.

August 25th, 2009, 01:40 AM
Your linework is really good imo, it seems that right now when you try to do volumes and light is when things fall apart. Also the colors some times don't seem right, in that last one it's simply too saturated. Work with more muted colors, mid tones, then only use high saturation when you try to bring something up. I think you're doing the right things, just more time is needed. Cheers!

Hey Jdeegz, thought i'd return the favor

I like what you're doing around here and i can see some major improvement and i believe you're on the right track.
I see you're trying to stay away from color somehow. Let me tell you a little secret:
As you paint more and more, it changes the way you look at pencil drawing. By practicing paint a lot, you gain a certain perspective on color, mood, volume, depth-of-field, etc. and all these help you immensely in your traditional drawing area.
Don't be afraid to wreck some paintings, you learn something even from the worst (if not Especially from the worst). I'd like to see you try on some more color and nerve.
I feel what you need now is more Balls in your paintings :D .

Regarding this last character, i think the best options would be nr.2 and nr. 4. I like their poses alot and i think they help build your character quite well. regarding the pose, 4 might actually be better, it has a sense of movement and gesture specific to an old yet curvy and selfconfident lady.

Keep up, i'll be dropping by to see your progress on the lady and i'll try to help around here and there.
Cheers!

faces are the hardest. I feel the same way every time i try to paint one in color >.< That one may have been tough, but it looks like you learned a lot doing it. I often prefer to jump headlong into things i don't understand rather than slowly inch my way forward. Also there are plenty of pros who use the eyedropper for colors, it is rare to find people who are just good at painting them. It's all about the practice... Keep it up

Looking good on the industrial design deegz :D

I'm liking the color as well, very stylistic.

What I would suggest is to start up a ton more gesture and figure studies before moving forward with the character design.
Perhaps www.posemaniacs.com and www.characterdesigns.com with a splash of www.hel-looks.com for good measure :)
Make sure you get those proportions right as well as learning the muscle mass before moving forward on anatomy :)

Have fun, hope to see more.

Thanks for looking!
