I've been playing with character concepts for a comic for a little bit now, and this is what I've decided on for the main character. The colours are a little funky because I don't own a scanner and have to snap all my pictures with a digital camera.

I would suggest working on your shadows. Identify where the light source is and start from there.

The shading was much more... visible on paper, but my camera doesn't always pick it up. :-/

Well it's not just the intensity, it's the positioning.
For example, your drawing has the shadowing for the hair around the edges only which doesn't give people a sense that the hair is sitting on a round object. You have no highlights. You have the same gradient levels of brown evenly to the edges.

One of the projects is painting the shadows and light for a basic sphere in black & white and then in color. I would try doing the exercise with the colors you chose for his hair and see the difference.
