(original post)
Hey all been a while since I posted.
Been busy trying to ship Marvel Ultimate Alliance and get started on the next project.
Sorry for the large download, here's what I can show so far. Hope you like?
When I had the sense to save the initial sketch I put them with the final piece.
As more info (heroes and villains) get released I will be adding more to this thread.
Cap was the toughest- the client (Marvel) was very specific with how they wanted him portrayed- I would say moreso than any other liscense. In the end (bottom of the three) I ended up using a straight render of the next gen lo res model and texture that I worked on, and then painted over him for the left head shot. My favourite of Cap is the middle 1940s look. Nevertheless it was a dream come true to work on all of these characters.

I'll put up another fun piece that I did for myself- a personal favourite growing

Thanks again, more will come as soon as I get official clearance.

For those inquiring about how I did them- they are sketched and painted entirely in Photoshop. From time to time I'll take a low poly model and pose and play with lighting rigs to set up a good colour study. But for the most part with only a day or two at most to do each painting (our schedule being so tight) many are pretty "fast and loose". I have done a step by step demo of the Loki piece in the most recent ImagineFX mag. on shelves. It also comes with a dvd with my Photoshop files. It's the one with a painting of mine of Storm in an alternate blue and white costume on the cover with a yellow border.

good work. Hard to comment in detail because of the shear mass, though. One thing that I would consider is to be more careful with ur use ofe black in paintings. It sould in fact hardly ever appear... before starting with your detailing too early maybe you should also think more about the composition of colour- and valuefields as well. your lighting often seems a bit fuzzy, direct light and bounce off/ ambient have same values and so on. Try to direct that a bit more...
Other than that - I really dug that work.

my favs are probably this http://www.gangus.net/X2%20update/Captain_America.jpg
and the last you just posted.
They're sweet. Really sweet.
However, two things.
1. I can totally tell when you use a model as a ref, it's incredibly apparent... this wouldn't be bad if
2. there were a consistency in quality for each piece. But while I find some pieces really executed brilliantly, especially the cap america and storm piece... others just don't... meh. Thor for example looks pretty muddy. You also have some issues of extremely refined rendered areas, and fairly unrefined areas, that make some of the pictures 'fuzzy unfinished' in appearence.
If you posted these all at half size though, these things wouldn't be as much of an issue... but this is how you have presented them.

Wow. I think you just made my morning. Awesome work. I think that Storm and the first Galactus/Silver Surfer are my favorites. (Not to mention the textures on Iron Man's suit...bravo.) I really liked seeing your concepts and progression shots and it was interesting to see the black and white versions as well.
Nice. VERY NICE.

Hey Guys Thanks for such positive feedback!
A couple of things:
I made the images smaller- I apologize for making them so large -they must be hard to view/download. I don't mind showing process and details though:
I like leaving my "beef" out in the wind persay- this way it helps those looking for creative tips or ideas easier to decipher how I do things. I am certainly not afraid to share my secrets and cheats towards creating my images.
ColdKodiak: You make some very good points. I do use some models for lighting studies, but you would be surprised at how little I really use them for in the finished painting. Especially when you see that they are many times under a 1000 poly's and tiny in game (it being a 30 ft. camera to fit 4 players on screen at the same time-which I do suggest you at least check out- it's crazy addictive and fun to play)
You are correct though about areas of refining- when much of the blocked areas or lighting elements are pre thought out for you-via render- it totally changes the piece when you have the time to concentrate on other elements. I first seen how much help this could be when checking out and idolizing Goodbrush like so many before me.
I also do have 2 different artistic speeds- a softer style and a harder edged detailed style- I don't like to stay with one- but rather continue to explore both methods. A shame you find the Thor piece muddy- I actually like it as one of my favourites as it is loose and has more expression than using any reference. To each his own I guess :)
Though, I try and use areas of 'fuzziness' to not have the eye dwell in one place too long where it is not needed, but instead encourage the eye to continually flow to the main areas in the composition.
I will be more mindful of these critiques as I work more in the future though, and truly apreciate your thoughts. I have a series of nose art paintings that I have been working on that I will post here very soon, where I was not under such a tight deadline. I would like to get your opinion on these as well when I post them- They will be title "Victory Gals" please keep an eye open for them in the next little while.
Zergaloth: God...Ha - you have always been far too kind, nice to know that you remember me after being absent so long.
Glad you like the Storm pic- It was more a personal piece as well in that they didn't need this for the game, but I wanted to do this version of her.
bdfoster: Thanks dude, I know it's bad to onslaught you guys with so many pieces at once. These load screens have always been a labor of love for me -starting with the first X men Legends series. I'm glad you like them.
I wish Beta Ray's hammer didn't have that odd end on it as well. I tried to save it by giving it the best possible surface detail.
lewiston: Comment on the black...interesting. I've never heard of any hardfast rules about the amount of a certain value in a piece- I always felt that being lawless is part of the joy in art- so long as it is done with conviction and proper intent. I will keep this in mind though. I guess the same could be said for the amount of pure white used in a composition, no?
Thanks for giving me something to chew on though- food for thought.
Also a sincere thank you to the others that have expressed their enjoyment of this work. Check back again- I'll add more Marvel work in this thread when it becomes available as not to clog up this forum with tons of different new threads.
Respectfully,
Gangus

Sweet stuff Glen! I'm really enjoying a lot of the textures you have going on. I think the Iron Man one is my favorite.
I'll have to agree with lewiston though that your shadows go a little too black for me. It seems like all the shadows go to pure black and all the highlights go to pure white. One things for sure, you ain't afraid of contrast :) Nice job.
Oh yeah, and it's about time Beta Ray Bill got some love :D

Being a new member to this forum-I think you are missing the point of posting a response.
To say Ironman's armour sucks and his face is even worse is pretty rough. Maybe there is a language barrier or translation thing happenning here. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I believe you need to offer an explanation of why you think his armour sucks and his face is even worse.
That is the whole point of offering a critique.
His armour design is dictated by Marvel- as per the Ultimates style. I believe this tobe one of my stronger pieces as I think it takes an otherwise difficult costume design to illustrate effectively and makes it look interesting.

EDIT!
Oh yeah actually there is something bothering me...
Those lines of light in the picture with frosty and that dude with light sparing out his fingers - those beams of light and the circles around his fingers doesnt really do it for me...
Same applies for the pic with the same dude(sorry dunno name) with the orb in his hand.. those beams of light seems kinda odd...
I know light does have a tendency to be like that, but some softer edges and pehaps shorter range would make them more appealing..!

Hey guys thanks for all the feedback.
Here are a couple of pieces that I did off the books- the first (Hulk) is not for the game but rather for myself, I wanted to capture the maniacal nature of the ultimate Hulk. I really apreciate the way he was written so differently in the Ultimates. I also wanted to focus on conveying the power of his shockwave.
175826
The next (Jean Grey) is me taking the opportunity to paint one of my first remembered childhood characters-Dark Phoenix-The Marvel Ultimate Alliance website has already shown her to be a supporting cast member- so I thought I would throw this in as a treat. Some might not agree with the effect I did with the fire, but I wanted to give it a different -more etheral feel as it is telikinetic in nature and in space where there is a natural absence of oxygen- I didn't want to go with the comfortable "standby" fire effects and colors.

nice stuff, i like the dynamism in your poses and im always a fan for anything xmen related...
crits: watch your anatomy, its looking a bit funky on some of your figures. more so in prep sketches, but in some of the finals too... your bodies look disjointed sometimes, twisted in ways that peoples bodies dont twist, especially at the joint connections. watch your shoulders, for instance....
also, your colors are nice and vibrant, but im seeing a muddiness to your shadows in some places, though i know youre going for dramatic lighting, its look "dodged and burned" in some spots. id watch your edges in the first few as well, theres some place you could stand to lose one or too.
otherwise, rockin dude. great to see someone producing so much work of such complexity. keep it comin!

Layil basically said what I was trying to put into words--your darks are getting dark too quickly, there's too stark a contrast in some parts of these and it does look a little dodged/burned in a few areas.
Honestly I only mention that because it's covering up the beautiful drawing, I've always been a huuuuge fan of your lineart in the first place :)

These are all great... I think I've seen most of them on other forums, but the last one has a really cool Iron Man goin' on. The armor seems more like armor and less like a stiff suit. That said, I think Layil and easy tiger are on to something. A graphic, drastic shadow style is really well suited for this work, but the edges are muddy. For example, Wolvie's back is not very well defined. The muscles would have highlights and shadows going on more so than just the fuzzy flat block-shadow.
I thought nobody called it yet, but I'm apparently wrong: Beta Ray Bill. and AWESOME.

WOW. Amazing update man.
I love that Phoenix and that Mephisto (wait...his name is Mephisto, right, i'm sorry..i'm not up and up on my Marvel characters these days) Beautiful renderings in all of the characters intertwined there. Must've taken forever.
I like the Hulk too. I think the only problem with him is maybe his left shoulder. It just looks a little off...maybe it's the highlights. But that said, the hands, the rocks, the shockwave are all spot on.
Dude. This is all awesome work.

Your work is quite brilliant, I really enjoy the vibrancy of the colour and the vitality of the lines.
However, my critique would be that I find your rendering of Storm a bit odd--her hair and scalp look completely astonishing, I mean I am amazed at the detail; but then it is all sort of thrown off by the lack of sharp focus just beneath the hair, on her face.
She needs to have a few sharp points of detail on her eyes, eyebrows, lips and the tip of her nose, especially when placed so close to such a detailed area within the same depth of field.
You can even make out skin complexion and pours on her well-articulated and rendered skin, yet her eyes and brows are mostly a soft blur ... it throws it very much off.
That said, this is my opinion and does not take away from your excellent talent.

My apologies to the forum moderatoers I will use the new attachment system from now on.
Deselect- Thanks for your input on Storm- I will definately look into her again and see if I can do some of your suggestions.
Undertow- Yeah Beta Ray Bill may be one of my favs too.
Jason Snair: Thanks for the comments man- yeah that Mephisto piece was fun to do- I'll address Hulk's shoulder as well.
Layil- Thanks for the feedback as well, I know I have a tendency to push anatomy to the brink of exhertion and sometimes beyond- I love just really emphasizing the body language in the spine, especially with my female subject matter. But yeah your right it isn't normal :)
Everyone seems to bew commenting on a muddiness to my shadows- I will keep this in mind- these were more about making that quick visual impact- I have also been leaning toward reducing my images of the unecessary details- something quite the opposite from my early work. I want to eventually strike the right balance between story telling detail and overall visual impact in a graphic sense..
-to everyone who wrote in - thanks for your crits and support- it is much apreciated and inspires me to keep kicking these out. I'll have more to add to this thread soon.

i love it , my only crit which would be constructive is that the pictures lack the strong light consistency, it seems that you are using the light to help you define the character and that is a great method but the weakpoint of it is that you arent following it through so it ends up being less tangible then it could be, take storm for example, you used the lightninh glow to give you highlight on the head but didnt use it to give the rest of the iluminated body the impact, the same problem appears on the thing, the diffusion of the light seems uncontrolled, i had the similar problems but then i stasrted defining lightsources thru more contrasty sketches it does a world of difference trust me, i mean no disrespect, cause as i said these are awesome but i think u got the skills to go thru the roof:}

Thanks again for the feedback everyone!
You have encouraged me to throw up another piece.
This one has a bit of a softer feel to it. We have already released that Loki plays a role in our game so here is a shot of his usual asociations. Hope you like. The these 2 aren't the half of it- wait till you see how many Marvel liscensed characters are in this game (I think it's like over 150)
Hope you can all check out the game when it hits the stores (I think it is Oct 25) I spent the majority of the production time creating the textures and environmental looks for the game along with Mitch Cotie. The game play itself is wicked addictive too!- expecially when you get Thor- send your enemies (yes plural) flailing through the air in a tornado and then fry all of their asses with lightning. he he.
lupe- no worries lupe, I had a good idea that it was just a misunderstanding.
forums are tough though- especially with so much communication where inclination is always up to individual interpretation. If it helps at all- I was
having the blue light being self generated from the interworkings of the suit itself.
But I'll still understand if this one doesn't make it to your desktop ;)
Thanks again everyone for the support- I will keep adding to this post as more comes availabe- yeah I did a huge wack of paintings for this game.

Lesak: Thanks! Check back in a little bit- as the game release gets here- I'll have some more pics to put up.
Thanks again guys!

Hey Gangus, I've been a big fan since I got that copy of Imagine FX and was blown away by that amazing image of Emma Frost (I'm a big mark for the White Queen). I'm also loving the latest post of the Enchantress.
I am picking up on what some people were saying about not using black in paintings. I was always taught not to use black. I was told that black doesn't often appears naturally ,and when it appears in a painting, it sucks the life out of it.
However, I don't think your blacks are killing the images at all. There are moments of dead space, but I don't think it takes anything away. With that said, however, it may help to cool those blacks down a little to round off the image a little more. Just a thought.
Love the work! Keep posting!

Also,
Thanks More Junk - I apreciate your sentiments. and that you are open and understanding to using black space and areas of less detail also as tools to keeping the eye on the area of emphasis in the composition. Many of these
loadscreen images were painted with the pretense that some spaces of the composition were to be used for mission briefing or game tips.
I will definatey focus on my use of blacks after this thread.
Zoio: I primarily use Photoshop for all of my work lately. Just switched to CS2 and am working out the bugs and getting aquainted with the new layer options.
Thanks again everyone for following this post.
Respectfully,
Gangus

Man with each one of your picture I'm all like "Holy shit look at that awesome [insert significant part of the painting]!".
Which is pretty rare with me as I'm usually more the realistic coolheaded guy.
And about that wolverine pic you added, holy shit look at that awesome texture!
Did you use custom brushes? Imported texture overlays? Painted by hand? I see crosshatches and blotches there....oh man all that hair, those birthmarks....damn, it's just too perfect.
Only thing that gripes me is that the arm holding the cigar is faded to much into the background, almost making it like it's not his arm.
Just pure, awesome.

Thanks again guys for the comments and feedback.
Mad Giraffe:All pretty much done by hand- I did use a new hair designed custom brushy- the first time I think I have ever swayed from the default set- I'm a slow learner but at least I'm tryn :)
With Marvel Ultimate Alliance out I can show the last few things I have left.
I really apreciate everyones comments and crits- and will keep your suggestions in mind on my upcoming pieces. ie the softer blacks and more difused highlights on my latest Victory Gals post.
Anyways,
here are the last few pieces-Hope you like:
Here's an extra Wolvie pic- more the ronin Wolverine persona-I wanted

Sorry for kicking this topic back up..
But I really think your work is amazing.. I read marvel comics myself, and some of this is even better then the comic art you'd find in these comics..
I don't know too much about how to make these, but I like the Phoenix, Loki, Thor and esspecially Thanos art the most..
I don't really like the Iron Man to be honest.. Iron Man seems kinda out of place in comparison to the background (which I do like)
I wish I could make stuff like this!
