For some reason I can't motivate myself to make art unless I feel I have some kind of obligation. So I figured sketchbook = good idea. Any and all crits are welcome because I have a lot(!) of room for improvement.

The first is something I made for the 2d Fighter Challenge (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=73095) a while back. Of course, I didn't finish on time. >:| The next two are some recent sketches that I plan on turnin' into bigger paintings...

I think this sketchbook is working. I feel guilty about not making art already! I'll get around to scanning some of my acrylic stuff...

very nice first post. really liking the middle pic.
the only thing maybe the blending could be a little smoother, but its a sketchbook so not a big deal at all.
keep up the posting. I want to see more, especially pencils.

Bald Muffin, Goblinshark, Kuroart, DesignBoot, thanks. :) I will prob scan pencil sketches soon. ITM, here's a few quick gestures for the 200 Gesture TD (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=78727).

Go sign yourself up if you haven't. You even get a nifty icon if you puss out. >:D

Only 190 to go! ... -_-;

Well so far so good. If there was one thing I didn't like about your paintings, is that they are on a white background. Especially like the one on the right.

great art in here...im diggin teh faces...keep it up

Vishaka
October 11th, 2006, 06:18 PM
Wakkawa- you're right, the white makes stuff look unfinished. I'll try and fix that one pic up.
Omega Red- thanks :)

The gestures below are the only ones I ended up turning in for the 200 gestures TD... I probably had about 200, but I think some of them were so horrifying I just couldn't show them. :nohope: A couple quickie skulls too...

Edit: Ah, I see I have my losatar already! How... beautiful. o_0

darkos, inkr, listing, thanks for your comments. :)

Had a very long bout of bronchitis and a trip overseas, but that doesn't make up for my slack. I'm starting to get real pissed at my lack of artistic skill, so I've been doing lots of ugly practice paintings... I think it's helping, because this self portrait was a definite improvement on stuff I've done in the past... :P Although it's definitely lacking... ugh.

Aaannnd a chun li doodle just because. -_-

I'm really envious of those animal sketches! Love your paints as well, juicy.

Your animal gestures are spectacular..really good feel for the form. Soem of your people life drawings feel stiff, to much liek you are considering the line more than the form. Keep up the posting and those pregress shots like the last painting..nice work!!

Silvestri, you are totally right about the stiffness of my figures, I have to start thinking more 3D.

You'r lines are good and I like the girl poses, but some of them might look a bit static. You should try to break free and get more life into them, I recommend taking a look at Vilppu's gesture drawing lessons. The way he describes how you have to "feel the flow" through the models was of great help for me.

Thank you to everyone who commented! :meow:
Am7 - yeah, I've been planning on getting ahold of some of Vilppu's books for a while now, thanks for the advice. :)

Replaced the Ingres drawing with a newer, improved one and started another copy for the OFDW thread... just blockin in stuff for now.

Great work. You're really sensitive to form. Know that perfection in a work does not always mean a tight finish. The selfportraits are attractively self aware.

Lovely use of smooth tones on the portraits! I want more *drools*

One suggestion for your blondy pic portrait, add a bit more tonal and colour variety on the hair, cause somehow it looks relatively flat compared to the face. :)

Nice work Vishaka. I love your warm saturated colour palettes and your collection of animal studies :)

Although your portraits are really strong, I suggest you try painting different facial expressions :) they'll make your great work that much more dynamic.

That's all. have a nice day!

The day after I was whining about my run of bad luck I actually got in a car accident. But I guess it's time to end my pity party and do a bit of doodling... >_> Just a teeny update. I'm probably going to finish this when I get home from work. *runs out the door*

Back, back again. After a long long hiatus. I missed CA muchly. Life has much more room for art now (I made room) and I have been doin' copies and such every day so I figured I'd post and get my crit on with you fine people.

Sorry for being a lazyass and not comin' round. No more excuses. It's art hardassery time.

The copy of the Gabrielle Cot portrait, I accidently saved at very low-res, which made it hard to work with, so I ditched it.

The blue painting is a copy of the movie cover/post for Titus (an awesomeawesome movie, if you haven't seen it I highly recommend it). I can't seem to find a good copy of the image online, I'll search for one so you guys can compare.

Annnnd a cute little red panda type thing because.

Just a quickie bird study from this morning. Mebbe 2.5 hrs.

Could anyone please recommend an artist for copying purposes? I've been mainly flipping through Sargent and Bouguereau artwork on ARC.

Rolo - Gracias. :)

Well I'm still drawing or painting every day for at least a few hours. I've got a real-world sketchbook that I can't scan yet, being jobless and newly-moved at the moment.

1 - Slightly better Titus copy that I'm very done looking at.

2 and 3 are quickie face doodles done without ref. Maybe 30-45 minutes each. I need to upgrade my anatomy skills sooo so bad. Like last year.

Also... I get the feeling that I'm saving these images too big? Is it my imagination? :smaller:

P.S. I fractured/completely jacked up my pinkie today which is making the whole process of drawing a little slower... hopefully this thing will be getting better soon.

October 24th, 2008, 10:23 AM
Nice sb! I dig your coloring so much! :)

Vishaka
October 24th, 2008, 05:51 PM
Clochette - Thank you very much. :)

Portrait of a friend... took about five hours in Painter X. Used a bad, washed-out photo for ref (as you can tell), but the result is not all bad. Eh.

Pinky status - was dark purple, now a pleasant blue-green.

Vishaka
October 25th, 2008, 08:16 AM
A helmet painting- used a personal photo from a renaissance faire for ref. Back was too dark to show up, so I couldn't paint it. :( But I love all the little color changes on the metal. Took longer than it should've, about 2 hours. And something from a while back - little piece of Gorillaz fanart done in Copic marker. :meow:

It seems since I hurt my hand I can't seem to stop drawing. >_> <_< Hmm....

J. Roxanne - thanks :)
flamable - You're right about the stiffness, I will work on it, thanks for your comments :D

For the past few days I haven't been doing any digital, just conte stuff, some portraits from life and lots and lots of crappy(!) anatomy studies. Mostly copies of K Chen's demos. They are helping but all the anatomy drawing has made me realize how lacking my knowledge/skills are. I'm feeling very frustrated with myself but I'm just going to keep drawing.

Hopefully I will have a job (gasp) soon and I'll be able to buy a new charger for my digicam or a scanner so I can get this stuff on the web. Not updating my SB has been making me very, very antsy. I've got about 20 pgs I would like to upload.

Here's a super quick copy of a painting that I did in Painter X. Original by this guy (http://www.gallerynucleus.com/gallery/pieces/151). I'm trying to get better at painting fast, not worrying about fiddly little details.

Vishaka
November 2nd, 2008, 03:46 PM
Still no scanner. I'm feeling fluey so i can't think of what to write here. I've been doing digital paints off of nude figure photos on characterdesign.com, but they are coming out a bit poopy so nothing post-worthy yet. :|

Checked out "17th Century Italian Drawings In The Metropolitan Museum of Art" from the library, it's very inspiring, look it up sometime.

really liking the portrait of a friend the contrast between her face and jacket are excellent, I dunno if she looks like that but it looks like she damn well could, great use of delicate shading.

young paddy - thanks. I agree that the cover is really powerful. And anothy hopkins is just The Man.

Fallout 3 has been munching away my time lately. my small offering below. I seem to be getting better with figure/anatomy in pencil, but for some reason that doesn't seem to be transferring when I try to digipaint the figure. :| Practice I guess.
