[ So, I'm imagining that you'll see a whole mess of poles stacked neatly somehow on this truck... ]

[ ...Some funky mechanized area that drills the anchor hole, plants the pole, and strings the wires... ]

[ Something like that. ]

[ It'll probably just require one or two operators. ]

[ Give them hardhats. ]

[ :teeth: ]

Okay, I'd like to be first to say -- awesome topic. Results should be nice from all.

Here's a roughie. I might do another take on it in a different style or something later.

critiques:

Johnnyhorse - nice and rough, like the way the yellow pops out
goran - excellent vehicle, looks fairly complex
camara - fast and nice, it conveys everything asked for. maybe it's just me, but your signature is pretty prominent

It even comes with instructions, as some missed the finer points of it's operation
instructions for pole walker (http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/2160/wildmachineinstructionsdu0.jpg)

critiques will come later when more entries are added

dan - the mechanics of your machine's stunning, truly inventive, it'd be sure fun to watch. I'd like to see this in an animation featurefilm:)
camara - thanks:) For the signature, I just thought that it distracts too much from the pic itself.

Some great ideas on here today, as usual.

I gotta say my favorites are a tie between Dan's (looks like it'd be great fun to drive and watch swing across the country-side) and Demdike's (looks like something that might actually be used).

Nice job guys!

In order to keep the colonies flowing with life, power must reach all the facilities, and setting the grid quickly is important. Nothing moves quicker through rough terrain than a pair of mechanical legs.

@Johnnyhorse: I like the men and their hats, but you can do better then that vechiel - so I hope you take it further :[

@goran: I like the concept, and rendering (as always with your BW pieces). My gripe is only that I don't feel that you made a wild-looking machine, more a calm docile wilde-grown-looking machine. Still that might be more due to what I read into the title then anything else. Still I do like it alot.

@demdike: I really like the fact that the machine does not look wild design wise in the image, yet as a concept I imagine it in action and then it is a monster indeed. &Thanks

@Waffle_King: what unfunctional design?! >:D Thanks though.

@Camara: I agree with demdike that the signature takes too much focus, besides that I really would like to see how your creation plants the poles into the ground. Can't argue that it isn't wild though.

As for how I draw? well why not, I'll go through the photoshop CS2 tools used for my creation.
the underlaying Sketch was made with the pencil tool for added speed as my computer was under a heavy workload (thus the sometimes jagged pixelated lines).
I then moved over to the brush tool, and most time was spent here. As for brushes I vary myself, and I usually make a couple of brushes per image, in this case I made 3 new variations of old dirt and smoke brushes.
for some weird reason I used the line tool to make borders clear and keep the arms fairly straight, as I usually use the mask.
the Eraser, mostly used to to change values though.
the gradient & fill tools for large chunks, like the sky etc.

Layers and their blending modes. for example the dirt texture in my pieces are almost always in an overlay layer with trashy texture brushes etc.

I usually end each image with some last minutes some rendering layers.
A dust & scratches layer with a painted mask to remove various strokes and textures from areas that grab unwanted focus.
Level layers for shadows, highlights etc to adjust the image to get a better render.
Finally a highpass (filter) overlay layer with added mask to sharpen focus areas.

Then you have the drawing tools like boxes, perspective etc - but I hope I don't need to get into those ;)

God, this really is shaping up to be a good one. I'm still gonna leave my crits for when I fix (redo) my entry, but I will say this: Dan, it's good to see when great ideas and great rendering come together--typically it's one or the other.

goran - That's actually closest to the sort of thing that I was envisioning, myself... It might not be fanciful looking, but I think it's still pretty wild. Good job.

dan liimatta - Wonderful!! The concept and the execution are both top notch. Absolutely my fave today.

Crustacean - Cool ideas in here.. Rather rough looking, but still communicating a good deal of info. Nice job.
