It's been a LONG time since I posted. Have a few new personal paintings, and a couple not so new. Busy with working, you all know how it is...

The happy-handicapped kid in the bunny suit is quite a piece, its great. If I were to see a disabled person in a furry suit this would be it. Nice illustration.

Nice wide use of colors on the girl. Red green and blue stand out to me the most.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/cannibalcandy/The_Minotaur_by_ariokh.jpg
A character challenge myself and some of the art guys at my company gave ourselves. Basically we had to come up with a design for 'Minotaur' that wasn't the classic concept that we all know and love. So I did this deformed giant greek contract killer. Was a fun project, I'll prolly post the sketches that led up to him in a sketchbook, if I ever get one together on here.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/cannibalcandy/The_Creeper__HistoricalDossier_by_a.jpg
Just a revisit to an old character concept of mine. Playing with lighting, and fast rendering in a painterly fashion.

Thoughts, and suggestions?

Izzy is psyyyyycho!!!
Heh heh, great stuff brotha! Yeah, I dig the kid in the bunny suit, but I always have a special place in my heart for the girls. However!! Overall I like the self portrait the most. It's got that David Luce Drawing Concepts sort of feel, which is great. It's all about just f@ckin' around and having fun with mediums, traditional or digital.

On this second post, the dude with the orange jacket feels really stiff, but I really dig the colors. You know, for someone who leans so far towards the dark, twisted and f#cked up, you sure like your bright colors. I think you should do a Thomas Kinkade Izzy Style painting, and show that hack what he SHOULD have gotten out of Art Center. You know, naked amputees floppin' around in the magic hour light and pretty pink flowers :P

Peeeeace!

Heya Daniel! Thanks for the props! The Minotaur, orange jacket fellow is stiff indeed. I may have over done it, but I designed him to be horrifically bodily disfigured, he's got the worst case of scoliosis I could design. I dunno if it comes through. I think I would tackle the sort of awkward subject matter in the happy scene more, but I think it's gotten into the realm of Ryden, and that is a zone I try DESPERATELY to avoid. :P

Sartell, thanks for visiting! I will have a new site up, hopefully by the end of the week, it's been a month in the making, and will be updated MUCH more faithfully.

This is what Izzy would look like in the matrix. Mind's eye and all.

Looking real nice dude, glad to see you get your site all online and such.

I love your color work. If I were to have one crit, it'd be that your color shifts from specular highlight down to deep shadows is always predictable. It definitely makes things "recognizably Izzy" but it also makes most things read as similar materials. I'd try to work on some slight different applications to really nail the different material looks.

Exceptional artwork. It's once in awhile that these raw sewage styles sprout from the greenery. Dement mint is always refreshing. Here's some feedback concerning a few errors (If one would consider them errors)

Green bunny kid - On his lower chin, there seems to be a slight gash of miscolor right where his cleft would be. Another suggestion would be to make his circular tail rounder like a baby rabbits. The color white would divert the scheme so that's out of the picture. I can't decide, just sharpen the circular lining.

Fashionable woman - Macy Gray granddaughter funk? It's savage. By skimming, I noticed the glow from her nose, shoulder, and other locations on her skin. Sweat. The water of life. There seems to be a lack of it on her left cheek (facing the viewer) I imagine the scene taking place in a basement, on the sidelines of an underground Jamacian cornerstore club joint. Don't ask me how it led me to that conclusion - just accept it and don't lose those Egyptian marbles.

Errors in your self portrait? Nah.

Skull & boy - Classic. I'd change nothing.

Subway station pioneer (What I call him) - Reminds me of Gorillaz style characterization. I remember seeing one of their CD cover designs at the mall a few days ago. One suggestion for a possible backround: a blaring train with the skull for the window. The skull from your classic painting? Who knows. That's where the wind blows.. (and why his hair is distorted from runaway machinery headed for his unfortunate bodily form)

Old character concept - Suggestion: Make nail marks on the concrete floor. I'm unable to provide any anatomy tips because of it's untamed nature.

Hyperspace travel - Hah, portable galactic entertainment wherever you go.. to the death. There's an obvious mistake that might be the angle - his right thumb seems to be at an arch. The scar defect of a soldier?

Octopi Sophie - Whoa. My only suggestion would be to make the tentacle amidst her breast pointier. (Or thicker with a vine themed tip)

Future Shock - The book text looks kinetic. Connects with the electric surprise of the two character's facial expressions.

The Bone Reader - Excellence. Defying all possibilities of artistic suggestions, it hit me - maybe his feet could be surrounded by enflamed oil, turning this skeletonious ritual (Yeah, I made that word up) into a breathing tribal inferno.

Your newest female sketch - The decorative tufts around the umbrella seem to melt as they turn around her hat area. The sly lipstick is a nice personal touch.

There's a pictures & graphics section on a music website I've been going on for over a year. If you have time, you should submit some of your work and recieve commentary. The website is called "www.rapflava.com" and my name is Vulgar without the ` You should register and post some of your artwork in the "Pictures and Graphics" section. So, So good. Applesauce is by far my favorite, love the colors and the action in that one.

I think the Frostfell piece is very good, and it works on many levels, however, I probably would not have pegged it for the same artist as the previous ones. I think maybe it is your decision to not employ non-traditional composition. Most of your other pieces have a little more "design" and skewed compositions.

Really nice stuff though man, you got the goods!

bomba- yeah! Thanks man. I'm all about those old school silly ass covers. I think if I get an opportunity to do another though, I will inject FAR more of my own style into it. I'd like to push for more of the open possibilities that say Foster, and those cats get... beautiful shit, when you get to do what you want and know will look good.

muttonhead- I agree. The cover was pretty different than my usual odd stuff. I think it was the art direction, and my desire to really pull of a D&D 'style' cover. Next time, maybe something more crazy...hahaha

rushwolf- I'll try this strange COW thing... maybe I can pull of something interestin..

Orifice- ... orifice? but... why? Hahaha. I'll not be changing the eyes any time soon. The palette was self referential, and I needed some bright red, so there it is! hehehe Eye? what eye?

Ben Mauro wow! That stuff stayed up for a bit, eh? I absolutely fucking LOVED Gary's classes. I took advanced sketching twice. I loved that old coot. I wonder what he's up to. He hasn't cacked it I hope?!

Jink No worries, Jinky's. What I mean by ala prima is that I am trying to do the color and paint stroke for stroke... a single color or value, a single stroke. Of course that's very difficult to do, and I flubbed it to be sure. But the effort was there.

Vulgar` Awesome! I'm glad I could be some kind of muse for yer writing endeavors. I went and read them. Very not bad. ^_^ I'm a big fan of poetry, and do a bit of it on my onsies. I like your work. I think you let it get just a tad diluted though in trying to expand your imagery. I dunno. It's likely a stylistic thing, but there are points where it feels like forced cleverness. I think this is largely solved by fluid phrasing, and comfortable pairing and contrasting of the metaphors. Keep em up, and lemme know when you finish new stuff, I'd love to read some more. Thanks!!

MRPLOT I'll keep on it, brotha, I promise!

I was bored tonight, and wanted a little something to work on. I read through the CoW, and decided to give it a shot. After finishing I went to post, and realized the deadline was yesterday! HAHAHA. Man I'm a tool-bag. But it don't matter, here is my 'Heart Harvester'.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/cannibalcandy/SKELKfinalFORWEB.jpg
The Heart Harvester isn't a singular creature, it's actually the name of a condition, specifically a rare breed of parasites. Smaller than even blood cells, these 'crustaceans' infest the chambers of your heart. After munching steadily on red blood-cells, they work up their numbers (into the millions) enough to attack the meat of the heart itself. When this orchestrated feeding frenzy occurs, your heart is liquified and excreted into your bloodstream.

The demise of one who's contracted the Heart Harvesters is both horrific and painful.

(color scheme is accentuated for viewing purposes)

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/cannibalcandy/Birdfinal-wingedhealer.jpg

The Winged Healer is a carrion eater found in humid swamps. It is so called because of it's use by doctors. It is used to clean festering wounds, and damaged tissue like medicinal maggots. It will ONLY eat rotting flesh with it's amazingly sensitive beak and probing with the sensory pads on it's feet. It also secrets a strange organic chemical from glands in the wrinkles of it's medial beak that have been proven to act as an antibiotic. It's odd cone of feathers around it's neck is believed to be both a display during estrus periods to attract mates, and to keep it from soaking it's flight feathers in ichor from feeding.

Another new paint. I'm not entirely happy with it yet, and I'll be spending maybe another hour or two on it tonight. I've had the image in my head for about a month percolating and all that good stuffs. I challenged myself with a purely value painting, I'm trying to convey a bright moonlit scene, so it was difficult to do a high keyed painting, in the darkness... almost cancels eachother out, in theory, but here's my try! ( I am suddenly in LOVE with painting buffalo!)

About last work, I love the background's brush strokes. The child are so sweet and her dress have really good tones. Buffalos are amazing, I think that you find the real spirit of this beautiful animals. In my opinion, colors are the key to improove the great mood of this painting.

Chuckmate-Thanks mang! Means a lot coming from ya!

primalpate-I'm always aiming for better. I'd love to have some specific crits on my anatomical shortcomings. Thanks for the suggestions!

Poshspice-My favorite spice, and another compliment from one of my CA heroes. Thanks bro!

Vulgar-Hoi, the star trail is actually a really good idea, maybe something graphic like, in pastel blue. I'll have to give it a shot when I've got some extra times.

zweiDee-I use both. Usually Painter just to get a rough sketch and very basic texture/values in. Then I often take it into photoshop and finish it up... Here's a quick look at my process in a speed paint. http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/44425640/?qo=26&q=by%3Aariokh&qh=sort%3Atime+-in%3Ascraps
This was all done in photoshop, but the first and second images are usually what I do in painter in the first five or six minutes of an idea. Hope that helps.

Andyparkart-Hell yeah, brother! I just sent in all the bground check stuff, so we'll see what happens next!! I'm totally looking forward to the opportunity, if it works out!

stalsby-I did do a bit more, spent another hour or two on it, just cleaning up the girls face, and adding some more details to bring the eye more gently into the background. Take a look!
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/cannibalcandy/Tatanka_by_ariokh2.jpg

So very rare... but here are some ACTUAL Cannibalcandy (Izzy Medrano) creature/ character concepts-now with some tasty orthos:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/cannibalcandy/BnWfinal.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/cannibalcandy/orthosfinal.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/cannibalcandy/3quarterpaint.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/cannibalcandy/orthosgrim2.jpg

Each set of designs took about a week including orthos and whatnots... It was pretty exhausting, doing them after the normal job, but it's ALWAYS good to have complete thingies in your book. That being said, I totally welcome crits and suggestions so they will be a nice addition to said book.
Thanks!

------------------
-Verbatim: Thanks, bro! How's things with you? I suggested you in my list of bad ass mofos to replace me at Neversoft, you get a call from them at all?

-Ikuru: Do they have cateracts too?

-Carnifex: I've always loved the Mike Hussar. He's definitely at the top of the list of favorites!

And thanks to everyone else for taking a look at my humble filthiness!

Really moving work and wonderfully executed. Love your rendering style and color and lighting sense (especially on little things like that blue glowing oxen thingy)

Your favourite movie must be boxing helena right?

MonkeYoakum Living is indeed important, I'm glad I could help!

zemotion Thanks!!

AttackCat Thanks, yo! Concept time depends. Largely on what I'm trying to indicate. Many of my illustration for myself stuff usually doesn't take more than a couple of hours. My process is pretty standard. loose sketches, followed by a three-quarter color mood piece, followed by turnarounds.

MR. Carbon The Cannibalcandy (entity) is not liable for sustained eye damage from peering at any and all works directly from or inspired by the entity. Lawsuit aside! Thanks! I really appreciate the respecks. I hope my work don't bring you down too much. I don't think or emote too much when I work, it just kinda comes out a bit dark.

ikuru I'm working with some really great artists, so I'm trying my best to get better and learn everything I can from them. Awesome stuff!

Frank Wade Cheers, bro!

bluefooted Aww, yer gonna make a grown dark man blush. :)

Carnifex I'm all about tasty brush strokes. It's my favorite part! Thanks for commentin.

Crazy-Concepts The computer is just another medium. There's no reason it shouldn't get it's just dues from the traditionalist community. ^_^

Chupacabra That's odd, I didn't know you could lower the rating. I don't mind. I'm not on here for stars, I want peers to see my new work, and keep in touch with folks. Thanks for fixing it though!

MonkeYoakum Thanks! I've posted since now. ^_^

KidApe Glad you dig the dragon, I'm pretty proud of it.

ikuru I'm not using Painter much, mostly because my copy is all squishy, not working properly and such.

I know I've been rather negligent of my thread here, so here's a little love.

Since it came out and I've seen tons of screenshots with these characters, I figured I'd do a little drop of some of my favorites. Here was a bit of my contribution to the most recent tony hawk game. Most of these are coming up on a year old so they may be a bit rough around the edges. All but the last are property of Neversoft and Activision.

The blue lobstermouth man - I did that on a cruise ship with a tiny red lobster - reminds me of the robotic intestinal insect from the first Matrix.

These are so absolutely gorgeous. The only thing, though it's probably a bit late, the "Hardcore" kid in your last post, the flesh being pushed up where he has his hand shoved in his pocket is beautifully rendered, but he's got a bad case of lotus feets! I'd hate to skateboard on those dainty things. :teeth: It happened to a couple of other guys on your blog as well.

I can't tell if this is an old lady being gravititionally fed giant jawbreakers in her workplace or if it's a man mouth juggling ping pong balls. A distinctive additional feature to indicate the character's gender could help the outlook of his/or her identity, because right now, as I'm looking at this, it could be either male or female. The pale, clay-like bizarrosity of it reminds me of the Nightmare Before Christmas.

Keep doing you

Hey guys, been a while. Usual reasons we all have, but I've done a couple of paintings for myself over the last couple of weeks. Always looking to improve!
