Hi Layil,
Thanks again for the write-up on the forums. I'm so excited to have these attendees at our hostels!
Groups are designed to be 8 or more people that wish to room together.
Those groups should contact me directly and I'll take care of the reservation for them. In terms of rooming together, group reservations are given priority in this. Individual travelers will be placed in rooms together only if there is room available at check-in. We'll do our best to make sure they are comfortable and have a great time.
Have a good one,

Ok guys, Im looking at going from NYC on the 14th (afternoon, I have an art history test in the morning) and coming back on the 19th. I would fly to Oakland I guess. from JFK> THat would set me, back 450 bucks without taxes. Sound about right? I may come earlier, Im gonna chat with my teacher tomorrow, maybe I can take the test a few days earlier.
But pricewise is that about right? I dont really have any idea as to how much it should cost so help is welcome!
Cheers TIm

Is there still an open spot for the hotels? Just booked my flight, 15 to 18. (btw, why is there a lot of people staying from 14 to 19th, I thought the workshop is only 15 to 17, am I missing something? and 15th's event doesnt start till night right?)

Wow...
From Nannette at HI Hostels
Greetings Loren,
Thank you for your interest in staying with us. Currently we have space
available for your group at HI-SF Downtown, Union Square. The rate is $23
per person/per night and this includes tax, continental breakfast, linens
and towels. All reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-serve
basis – we fill up quickly so we advise early booking. Please complete and
return the group contract with a 50% deposit and we will confirm your
reservation. The balance is due 30 days prior to arrival and
cancellation/forfeit policies are listed on the contract.
Not sure what's to be done about this really. I'd gladly offer to put the money down on my credit card but that's astronomically out of my price range, y'all. I'm guessing we may have to try a first come first serve basis or we'll all have to book hostels individually, but request groups somehow. Suggestions?
UPDATE : Don't panic, though... something might be getting arranged :D

hmmmmmm that sucks. i would offer too but i think my parents might freak out if they saw the bill.

November 4th, 2006, 10:54 AM
Hi Loren, this might be a pain, but If you could open a new account with your bank, send us IM with the banknumber, clearingcode etc, we could transfer each our own share of the deposit to that, and when you got it all, you could transfer that to the hostel. This could get very complicated ( with us staying different times etc) but it could be done.
All depends on how busy you are!
Otherwise, maybe the girl at the hostel could put us all in the same room if we just decided on one specific day and time when we all transfer our individual share of the deposit to the hostel separatly, with a tag saying that we are there for the conceptart thingy, and she could book the room for us. (She'd have to know what time and date, of course)
Hmm, complicalicious...
Btw thanks for going though all this to try and hook us all up, its much appreciated!

November 6th, 2006, 05:32 PM
Greetings Loren,
Thanks for your email and your clarification. In order to book as a group
and be able to room together, we do require that a group contract and
payment in advance is taken care of.
So there's 2 options I see. We could break down into smaller groups and have smaller group payments, but I'd still feel uncomfortable having people send money to a stranger , even though I'm sure we're all trustworthy people, there's always a number of problems that could arise. The other thing we could do is meet up at the airport and have one of the people arriving on the earliest day call the hostels to see which has most room. Nannette from the hostels also said she's still make note of our group coming that that we could try to be grouped together. Sound good?
-Loren
ps. you can still pay to the hostel now to ensure you have a room. It just would'nt be 100% that you'd be with other CA members.
romance
November 6th, 2006, 06:10 PM
OR... we could all just book separately and request to be put into the same room/rooms as the others. To me this make more sense and could actually be less trouble in the long run than with group pre-payments and organization and panicking at the airport when we can't find a place to sleep. We'll probably have to pay a few dollars more each night, but thats gotta be better than the hassle this could turn into..
Also, we still may be able to get a group rate and stay together if we book individually. Perhaps they will allow for individual bookings for groups.
Just a thought.
Layil
November 6th, 2006, 06:23 PM
yes, i agree with romance. i set up the hostels with instructions that you be put in rooms together when possible, and the rate i quoted applies for the whole CA group (or at least its supposed to) with individual reservations....
i think this is the easiest way for you guys to work it. i really advise against waiting until the last minute...

I made my individual reservation on Oct. 30 and they said they couldn't guarantee I would be roomed with other SOMAnoids. The only other thing the confirmation email mentioned was "Please provide your valid Hostelling International membership card at check-in to take advantage of the discounted membership rate." I expect that this is being taken care of on CAORG's end.
edit: on retrospect the membership discount and our group discount are probably not the same thing...either way it is $23/night...so no worries about the membership card thingy.

Coming up on the date quickly and I just had a question for anyone that is familiar with the area. How far is the hostel from the workshop, is it walking distance? And if there is walking to be done is it a safe area to walk in at 2 or 3 am? Didn't know if i needed taxi money or just extra shoes.:$

Since they give you the option to rent a bed, I'm assuming they also let you sleep in it.

Ok, so it seems we're all set.
I arrive at the airport at 8 AM. I'm going to be there until around noon with some others. If you want to meet up early with us, and catch a cab / take the train together, PM me, and I'll give you my phone #.

I was wondering if anyone was getting there really late, like 1-2AM. Because my flight's at 1:30AM. I hope people are still awake at the hostel then... most likely.

my plane lands around 11ish so i assume i'll be there at around 12ish. i don't want to miss the field trip! i'm so nervous just thinking about it, this'll be my first workshop and first time traveling alone. i couldn't convince my friend to get out of the hotel he got stuck with in so he'll be roomin with his mom kind of far from the hostel.

If people are unsure of what some of us look like at the airport... either have a look at the "SF - What do you look like thread" or look for crazy hair and sketchbooks. I think a couple of us have mohawks (myself and Interceptor at least), and such, so it should make it easier for you to spot us if were arriving around the same time.
Also, we usually we tend to meet someplace at the airport. Can anybody refer a good spot that will be easy to locate and will accomodate a dozen or more artists?

It's walkable. Just remember to stay with a group if you're walking around that late.

Sorry to ressurect a shortly dead thread, but I just wanted to thank everyone in the doom crew (as unnofficial as it was) for being so welcoming and awesome. I had times I'll never forget with you guys, and learned more in those 6 days with you then I did in an entire semester of drawing and studio classes (not that that surprised me...).
So, to all of you that I met, and all of you that I didn't, high five. See you all at the next (North American...) workshop.
