Here is a facial expression exercise I did for a character design I'm making. I think I need to bring some of the expressions a little further though.

One thing that I'm finding helps me is that I'll redraw the same expression from the same angle several times over, pushing the extremities of the expression just a little farther each time. I don't like extreme exaggeration, so I usually start with expressions that are pretty bland. After I've drawn the expression a few times over, I can tell what level of extreme looks the best. Sometimes I even have to draw more because I haven't reached something good enough yet.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Jarvis,

That really helps. This character has gone through so many revisions and now I'm trying to get comfortable with him. Doing this expressions exercise has helped me understand what work is still needed in designing him.

Guild Navigator,

My skill is flawed. I must continue my training. To that end will I achieve perfect technique. Only then will I be worthy of such praise.
