vigostar - cheers

Carnifex - thanks, the only thing I did not draw was the background texture, the character is all drawn with texture overlays added, taken from references. . . .

GriNGoLoCo - why thanks.

This is nice. Really like the fave, but I have few suggestions that could improve this painting. Remove the hand, decrease the intensity of the shadow on the shoulder to put the face more in focus and crop it up a bit.

Here's a paintover.

Elwell
September 30th, 2006, 09:07 PM
I like the hand compositionally, but it could be a little more delicate and visually connected to the rest of the body. Right now it almost looks like it could be another figure's hand reaching up from below.
Other than that, aces.

Hey Gavin.
I do like what you're doing with the colour, but I think the inky black and white was stronger. I don't know if that's just an issue of going from a really strong b/w image into colour. Tough to find space for the colour to really do its thing sometimes, eh? Not sure what I would think if I hadn't seen the greyscale version.

Gotta say I'm absolutely loving that grey area just to the right of her cheek in the colour version though. That's an awesome area.

I find the hand really important for carrying that self hugging gesture. Just MHO. Fingers seem to be gripping round the arm a little too much for me to buy it wholeheartedly, and it seems quite a masculine hand? but meh - nitpicks.

Good stuff though man. WW picked you up yet or what?

Jon - Good to see you here :) Thanks for the crits dude, adding the colour I found was indeed a little daunting, I mainly work in greyscale these days . . . . yeah, the hand on the colour version seems to look more bulky, will have to get on that. Thanks for looking, much appreciated :) As for WW, yip :)

Daniel Millar - Cheers, thanks ;)

Hi Gavin
Really great work. They all seem to be almost alive. Great sense of dimension and the flow is lovely in the line work. Seriously impressed and inspired!!!

I really dig how you describe form with this bark like quality. It gives the figures a sort of stoic placement that's definitely different. I feel there's a pretty strong photographic quality to them, even still. Maybe a bit of stiffness. I don't know if you are working from photographs or not, but I think it would be very interesting to see what you do, if you tweak the poses, so they are a tad more dynamic, and how that would play against the very sturdy feeling of this wooden textured description of form.

dkounios
October 9th, 2006, 02:17 AM
your style is different. bark like cannibal said. i like it. how you define the texture to bring it out like that is pretty damn good. wel done man.

Wow, these are great.. I love this style.
I think the colours on the Rejection piece don't make it better. I feel the simplicity of the black/white is really it's strenght.
On the second piece you posted I do feel those colours are in place. Maybe because you stuck more to the same sort of colours, so it feels more like one.
I love the Time Keeper too.

On all your stuff posted here I love how those inky lines lead the eye in a certain direction. It works very well.
I went through your site and saw this (http://www.ghillustrations.com/images/blackandwhite/Damp%20Slumber.jpg) that's gorgeous..
Do you have prints for sale? I'd love to have this one (http://www.ghillustrations.com/images/colour/Homemade-blue) hanging somewhere in my room.

love

nice man!
what material do you use?

October 9th, 2006, 09:40 AM
These are really cool, I have to say tho, I really prefer the mouth area without the added effects of the color version of your lady. I get that your showing an xray look at her teeth, but it plays like a foggy blob on what was a very strong piece. Otherwise, you put in some nice effects.

I love the lines you use - they look like they're almost carved from wood.

Beautiful, and so powerful

Wow, thanks for the responses everyone!

arty - Thanks dude!

cannibalcandy - Cheers, the markings do seem to have a bark/wood grain effect, yeah I work from references, mainly tweaking the drawings to better suit the overall image when nedded.

dkounios - Thanks

MikeMitchell - Thank you

Deke N. Wilkins - More on the way ;)

venli - Cool

Noë - Many thanks, will PM you

lwjacob - Cheers, I draw out the lines using black ink, pen & pencil, adding textures in Photoshop . . . .

RocknOats - Thanks, I may have to sharpen up the mouth area, it does kinda blur out

Mollinda - Thanks!

Capprotti - Cheers

Layil - Thank you, dam right, the hands haven't come across as finished as the rest, will work on refining these soon . . . .

quasinaut - Why thanks, will do . . . . (try anyhow)

rblitz7 - Cheers bud!

Again, thanks to all, will post up more soon . . . .

wow i really like the style, the lines are very strong. though i dig the black an white one far more than the tweaked ones. the second girl is strong as heck as well, the colors are fine, because they are not as, imo, overdone. thnaks for sharing. i'll check your site, hopefully for more awesome stuff.

Lovely, powerful and romantic. Great lines. What are you drawing with. What was in your head when you did this. Is it just what comes out or are you in a particular mood.

mizskellington - thank you :)

digitalkarma - cheers! :)

Eric Gerhard - thanks, I'll have to create one as I go through the process, I'll post up the pencils, digital finals below

ElCazze - thanks & welcome here :)

manslauter - cheers, I draw the bodies, hair etc by hand using fine pencils and ink, I usually invert my ink markings to white, all the lines in the pics are done by hand, scanned in and placed in Photoshop . . . .

Here's the original Pencil & Ink drawing & below the digital final:
