[ Been super-busy... ]

[ ...Super-sorry for this most recent chunky topic lag. ]

[ So, I hope that this topic is fairly fun and straight-forward. ]

[ In case anyone is confused about what an "orca" is, it's another word for killer whale. ]

[ If you don't know what a killer whale is, then Google it. ]

[ Actually, you should do that either way. This one will benefit from referencing some good orca pics. ]

[ If you're unclear on the term "mecha", that means make it robotic, perhaps very large, perhaps with the notion that there is a pilot within... ]

[ Main thing is to make a mechanical killer whale. ]

[ Mecha Orca. ]

[ :teeth: ]

I put the Wacom down and went back to pencil, pen & paper. Feels better. I did add the red eye glow in Photoshop, though....couldn't help myself.
His top half is supposed to be sticking out of the water. I erased the little people and birds I had on him for scale and forgot to ink any back in. Oh, well. He's really big.

yeaHYEAHYEAH! I liKe it all! I've been away for a time, but I'm back again!

Winstar: you did a really great job on the orca, I love it...

Gentrifier: great job, but there's one thing I don't really like that much, the fins. they look really bigf and flat, not like a orca...

Steve-O: again a great job, but I dont really like the eye, way too big. for the rest: perfect!

Ramon: Thanks for the feed back! On an orca the white part isn't actually the eye is behind the white dot, but I figured in "mecha" anatomy it would have made more sense to have my "super laser of doom" on the while dot. I liked where i was going with this, maybe i'll finish it up this weekend...

burrito. I really like what you don't here nice pallete and line

-Nice setup goran, I like the antique look and the writing.

-I like the murky look of Marty666's and Beershite's images.

-burrito, for some strange reason I found your mecha cute. :) What are those purple things at the top?

-Cool idea Steve-O. I hope you get to finish!

-Nice one Gentrifier, what are those things on the side?

-I like your coloring Winstar

After Captain Frederick caught sight of the gold whale of the sea, he ordered his men to spear it at once, little did he relize spearing it would provoke it to ram his ship.

ahh nice entries
Winstar - just want to squeeze that thing it looks so cute.
Steve-O - Welcome to DSG. nice post
burrito - Very cool, i would hate to get caught swimming next to that thing.
Beershite - I love your water effect, and the whales fins got a cool design.
Marty666 - Love your water effect also, awsome mecha orcas as well.
goran - really nice! i like the blueprint effect to the mecha orca. and the texture is really nice effect.
kaffeezombie - thats really sweet! Great design too!

good job everyone so far! *pats everyone on the back*

Nice contributions, everybody.

Burrito - On the left side of the orca's fin there's a swampish green film over half of the mechanical detail. Unique approach to the topic.

Goran - I wish I could read that text. Was it your intention to use a foreign language? (Meaning that you didn't really label each part of it's anatomy) Another exceptional entry.

Kaffeezombie - Nice one. The only problem is the hand/claw area - maybe you could remove the black filling inside the right limb.

Now, I await Dan Liimatta.

goran - That is simply beautiful! Your efforts go a long way toward fueling my continued topic posting engines. That is really really cool. You seem to have had some real fun with this one.

Marty666 - Nice atmospheric effects on this!. The composition's a bit cramped, but that's something that will come easier and easier to you the more you practice doing things like this. Great sub-surface effect and nice attention to the shift from light to dark.

Hamsta - Not much of a concept explanation today ( ;) ), but a much more thorough description of form (and much more detail) than usual. Good job!

Started out with some thumbnails, but this drawing made me laugh.

"The 'Mecha Orca' brand series of cybernetic neural-impulse suppressors revolutionized the live-stock, labor, and entertainment markets. With a simple, quick, and cost-efficient topical surgical process, the neural network of any host chordate could be effectively subjugated to the control of another, leaving the host powerless- trapped in a body they can't control. The company's value and stock sky-rocketed after the inital public demonstration, a cetacean of the species commonly referred to as "orcas" was compelled, through the neural suppressor, to leave the water and rear up on his tail. Despite public out-cry and a global concern with the ethical implications, the product quickly became widespread."

burrito I really like the organic mechanisms, the sides and the top especially.
Winstar the cuteness strikes, lovely design.
Marty666 Nice torpedo design, and the water is nice.
goran OMGBBQ! as usual. I really like your DSGs goran and this is indeed an excellent entry, my favorite of the bunch.
hamsta I really like your improvement in this, and the last DSG - you might perhaps want to keep the lines in the future as well? :)
KanoaRogers The Evil one of the bunch, and I like the design and grotesque feel.
kaffeezombie neat take on the subject, and well done to boot.
Vulgar` thanks, but you really shouldn't (I almost missed this one) ;)

2.5 Hours in PS CS2 (closer to 3 after Edits).
It started out as a hunt, the victim in the middle and the two orca mechs, but I found it more interesting to turn them into a rescue party given all the war and destruction one usually creates. My first underwater sketch and damn I learnt alot from this one (and somethings I will never do again) :P

(that is she probably is in the situation due to seeing two Orcas coming towards here in the first place, so the heroism is skewed, and the dirt is in ones mind)

Hi everybody!

You though I should let everyone (that cares) know that I'm still alive. I'm just buissy buissy. Just started an industrial-design education, it lasts five years.. but it's helluva fun :)

Oh and also:

http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/7955/mechawillymontagegw9.jpg

Winstar - Very nice, it can be very difficult to work with vector but you pulled it off.

Gentrifier - Looking good, but what's that under his fins? flotations divices perhaps, or just waves.

Steve-O - Like the hatch, it's a nice little detail that ads alot to the picture. But the fin that's furthest away, should it really be visible?

Burrito - Looking good as always, I really like your style.

Beershite - Very nice alot of energy and movement. Like the trick you did with the water, looks grrreat!

Marty 666 - Great depth in the picture. You really captured the ominus water enviroment. Nice design asell, Kinda like fighterplanes.
Painted on mouth, clever ;)

goran - You could probably build a functioning vessel from those blueprints. Alot of interesting details.

purplerose - Very original design, I like it :)

kaffeezombie - Wonderbar! Very clean. Well done with the wale anatomy aswell.

dakobah20 - Nice twist.. Kinda like the captain Nemo vessel (Don't know what the story's called in English)

Skolld - So that's what Hannibal Lecter would look like if he where a "killer" whale. [teeth]

LjK_89 - Practice makes perfekt, and that's what DSG are for (partially)

Hamsta - You really improved alot. Very good depth, mood and colors.

Aga - Same goes for you. Cool angle, funny characters and a funny concept asweel.. Keep it up!

KanoaRogers - Awsome lighting, but it kinda looks a bit more like a frog then a Orca. But never the less a good looking design.

moonlit - Nice work on the lighting on the wall.

Waffle King - Good backstory, Also I never thought I would see a whale with a beer belly ;)

dan liimatta - Alot of stuff going on. nice action with a good mood and stylish colors.

Keng - Didn't see your picture before I made mine.. But I guess it was bound to happen with a topic like this :P

balgus82 - Looks good to me, kinda like a shrimp :), oh and welcome.

Late and lame, as usual... I was going to try adding a wash, but I got frustrated with the ink work and bagged it as a lost cause.

Brush pen on printer paper, time unknown (on and off)...

The MechaOrca (TM) was originally designed to seek out invasive life forms (nonnative fish) and other underwater junk which was too numerous and dangerous for humans to deal with, with a tourist-pleasing appearance that would bolster the economy while restoring marine ecosystems. The MechaOrca was so realistic, the ads proclaimed, that native orcas even adopted them into their pods! Scientists consider it a coincidence that after such "adoptions," the MechaOrca (TM) units developed a much broader sense of what constituted a threat to the ecosystem...

hi everybody,

sorry I'm late but I visited my girlfriend and could not post from there.
I drew this on the crowded train, 5 min pens and markers:

Although invisible to enemy radar, the soldiers wearing the O.R.C.A. (omitting
radar creature armor; lame I know...) experienced severe problems of being spotted...

http://home.arcor.de/wildreizehn/fliflaflo/DSG/1128.jpg

In case somebody wonders how it's supposed to look like,
I had this B-2 Stealth Bomber-like style in mind but not enough time/free seats:

http://home.arcor.de/wildreizehn/fliflaflo/DSG/fullboat.jpg

critiques(dear god, took me ages:)):

Winstar - like it. Despite it's simplicity it's clearly a mechanical orca
Gentrifier - nice sketching, the mouth is a bit off.
Steve-O - welcome aboard:) Take care of your edges, they need a
little cleanup
burrito - I can't stop saying how much I like your strong style,
this one's very nice. but I have to agree, he looks cute:)
Beershite - pretty energetic, like everything except these
darn preset-photoshop-Stars;)
Marty - great atmosphere, the lighting in this one is well done
goran - excellent! A great take on the topic, very original:D
purplerose - not bad. could use some level-adjustment,
the dark parts are too bright
kaffezombie - funny. And well drawn too.
dakobah20 - good idea. To me, the colors are too
saturated and parts of the image are too blurry.
Skolld - quite nice, a very mecha orca.
LjK_89 - not bad, appears a little flat, maybe adjusting
the levels could help.
Hamsta - best one I've seen from you till now.
Lovely paintrly quality as usual but way more detailed and clearer,
great work!
Aga - funniest take on the topic. I like how you painted
the right guy's trousers, the quality of rendering differs to me
to the rest of the pic...
KanoaRogers - Hard to read, not sure that coud be
recognized as an orce...
moonlit - nice atmosphere, especially like the wind(water?)shield
from the cockpit
Waffle_King - very funny. like the drawing of the orca
dan liimatta - Highly impressive! Great drawing, it's
intimidating complex and very well done.
minor crits: no focus on the left orca's driver/he's
hard to spot and the girl's muscles are too prominent to me...
Keng - looks flat, maybe balancing the pic out
by using some darker colors as a countermeasure could help
balgus82 - welcome aboard:) nice and clean sketch
Lingmerth - good design, not sure about the photoBG
dv8mtsp - good concept, somewhat the two images
(fore- and background) don't connect in my eyes,
does the whale float? Also, the lighting is very different
on both elements
Crustacean - Great job, I went for paper and pencil too this time.
I like the way yours gives the impression of large scale and
complex structure by a few strokes:)
LateNiteHype - the brushwork is a bit blurry
Brightdreamer - nice sketch, I like it, looks pretty mecha

Hamsta

demdike Haha, I love the first one. And you didn't even have google to turn to for ref. Seriously, I can't crit anything, so accept an asspat.
The second is a bit too boxy, and no amount of textures will hide that, but there's no undo in real life.

dan liimatta Hmm... there are some very good details here, but as an overall, I find it confusing, and lacking in focus. The whales are bent in such extreme ways, it hurts me imagining it, and it doesn't matter that they are mechanical.

purplerose How about some ref? it looks like a humpback/orca hybrid. Sorry, but this is kinda boring, could use a more dynamic composition, or a more interesting perspective.

Lingmerth Paint over? Amusing. The difference between your painting, and the photo makes for an interesting result.
The fin farthest from us should cast a shadow on the underbelly. I'm a little confused with the section that follows the section with fins - is it that way because the orca is twisting, or is it built that way? I think it should be resolved one way or the other.

dan liimatta
October 2nd, 2006, 11:57 PM
demdike Thanks, and agreed. I was somewhat taken aback when I saw how cramped the 2nd driver got after I sized the image down, and then further distressed how the rending I threw on skewed him away from any focus at all. The girl was a left over that I never really dealt when cleaning the rest of the image - Both are fixed now and I hope you like the heavy edit. I might finnish this piece later and actually paint within the shadows but now I need to sleep :P
Hamsta (rant mode) While some on the overside in details, and dirty considering it a sketch - I think the the flow within is fairly well developed and should withstand those problems. Then perhaps not, after all it is all in the eye of the beholder. As for the bending, their bodies are fairly straight without bends, but the top has a 90 degree angle to the head, and the lower a slight twist and 110 degrees or so bend to the head- and considering they are mechanical and in design thought to have a passive pose of a 7:en I don't see any problems with this after all we where not asked to present an Orca, but a mech Orca, I could have made freefloating spheres and called it done. That said I made some changes that does effect the lack of focus, the main reason was the horrid lightning in the scene, there I missed the target by far. So I do hope you like the edited version more then the old, even if it still contains exessive bending ;).

Johnnyhorse
October 3rd, 2006, 01:39 AM
Dan, you forgot the shadows on the girl.... God what's wrong with you??? ;)
I love it though, before and after. I'm still not sure why I haven't sketched this one yet.
PS. was that, um, cylinder there the whole time? lol

October 3rd, 2006, 06:05 PM
Lingmerth, Waffle_King, Hamsta thanks a lot:)
I must admit that I had a short look just before leaving my flat at some googled orca-pics,
so I did use some reference...
dan liimatta - not sure about the lighting, I think the left guy should be
just a silhouette, even if lit from the lights in the cockpit.
As Johnnyhorse mentioned, the girl needs some shadowing too.
Despite all that, I like the edit and would love to see it finished:)
