3hours.
pencil lines retoched and colored in ps.
Hollywood. seems to be a ridiculos concept for me. The actual place is said to be
a flat boring dump, while the world has this fantasy vision of it.
thats the point of the picture.

Well, heres mine...I kinda got frustrated on the text on the road sign, so I used the text tool :( . I got frustrated on the person on the road too (He looks funky!). I was trying to make the man walking to the end of the "tunnel". I wasn't sure how to create that effect, so this was all I could manage. This turned out to be good practice for values, but I need more practice...:dead:

I think there is a smaller showing on this DSG because coming up with the idea for a ridiculous sign post takes some time and thought.
I guess one cowboy isn't a band of travellers, so I fail the assignment already. Doh'!
I don't smoke, but I just thought to a travelling cowboy, a no smoking sign in a saloon would seem ridiculous. This may be funnier if you live where smoking in a bar is against the law.

I live in a place where smoking in bars is illegal... you're pic is pretty much the exact reaction most people have. The fun part is then going to a town where smoking ISN"T illegal in bars... sadly the reaction is about the same, except astonishment instead of baffled.

Saaruto !!!
Your image is too large for the web.
If your using photoshop, press ctrl - alt - shift and S or use
the save for web function to compress the image into
a jpg.
I think drawing on a pc is difficult if you have never drawn
using paper. Perspective is hardest for me as the pictures
never fit onto the screen. I always draw outlines in pencil,
scan and then use the pc for layers and colors.

I hope not, for what it gives is freedom.
Take a random party of adventurers, knights, monks, angels, deamons, farmers and then present them with for them an arbitrary message in the given situation.
This kan be dragonslayer knights with a slayed baby dragon on their back going home, and this the sign says, and what sits in their town Home is the mother dragon [edit: I wrote baby instead of mother].
Earthly saints in their last journey coming to hell.
Bugs reding "1 347 jo" in the middle of the forrest (as Winstar sketched)
Death and co coming to a house with the sign Life
etc etc I can list thousands of various arbitrary/comical/surreal signs, they might not all be good, but surly the bondage freedom gives have not dried us up completly.
I presented signs you could not read, Hamsta presented surreaslism, others just messages that might suprise the party in question, like the cowboy you drew.

I certainly got happy when I read the topic--I even started on one immediately. I think one of the factors that stopped me is that I couldn't decide on a theme that was better than my other ideas.
On a related note, i apologize for not contributing to this one yet (or finishing the one I had). I started work immediately and then I got stuck in an art rut (a bad one, where I got frusterated and went back to practicing basic lines and values--familiarizing myself with PS). So I'm kind of on a different mission now.
A bunch of good entries here, unfortunately I couldn't read or quite 'get' some of them

I had the same problem, thus the wide range of my sketches. Thus we might argue that the problem is rather that we are allowed creativity, rather then not. :}

I am happy that my sketches are just sketches, as most are not telling the story right. Yet why I polished the 8th more then the others was for a foolish love of philosophy, in this case eastern.
8. a thought on taoism, and the sign says in my mind "if you look for the way, you will not find the way; if you do not look for the way, you will find the way" as they look for the way by trying to understand the message the philosohpical snake comes and bites/devours them from behind.
The others had their abstrac thoughts as well, well their thoughts anyway - the sorry state of affairs that I need to describe them for others
Johnnyhorse I think you win the arbitrary award with your piece though, and I've seen the drawings in question :P

Holy crap Dan, I'm retarded... I didn't realize each of those boxes was a different situation (well, i guess some are linked, but I was trying WAY too hard to connect them all ;) )
Dakobah20, my very first picture had almost the same theme--it was gonna be a buncha quys in a huge desert with a sign that read "WARNING: Flash floods!" and a flood meter stick (that records the height)

So the old geezers find a small sign and while they ponder its meaning they metamorph. To get the bottom with the matter they climb a mountain, gets surrounded by up signs, falls off the mountain and dies. When they come to heaven they find the doors closed, so they get back to their hunt, of course they now take up diving, in kansas, after that they play with snakes and then finds earth to be a small rock in space.
Sorry Johnny, if I did thought that up I do take the arbitrary award :P
Crustacean yes it is, I am often thankfull for that myself, and the thumb up of course.

I'll maybe finish this one later but I'm too busy at the moment;
PS 30 min, went for an "escheresque" sign.
MrJackson - here you go, I didn't like the edges either and cleaned the whole mess up -
that adds another 30 minutes to this DSG:
http://home.arcor.de/wildreizehn/fliflaflo/DSG/sign02.jpg
previous version (http://home.arcor.de/wildreizehn/fliflaflo/DSG/sign.jpg)
critiques:
dakobah20 - hm, I didn't get it at first glance, maybe because the
focus of your pic appears a bit "off", to ma, the landscape is to prominent.
ashton - nice brushwork, also like the colors.
LateNiteHype - freakish:) Nice humor in it.
Mehz - pretty rough, the chaos on the signs reads well.
dan liimatta - absolutely brilliant! So many good ideas,
such well drawn characters and excellent execution,
I love this in every way:D.
Hamsta - I like the way the sketch is still visible, nice work.
the sign could be a bit larger/play a more leading role, but that's nitpicking;).
RocknOats - these guys remind me of that small
wannabe-supervillain from spongebob, their expressions
of boredom are pretty good.
Saaruto - keep on practising. Don't let frustration overwhelm you,
there IS light at the end of the tunnel;D I'm not sure about
the texture you used for the cave, it seems to be flat since
the pattern doesn't shrink towards the horizon/end of the tunnel.
also, there shouldn't be light near the guy, you could lower
the exit and just shop his silhouette against the bright sky
outside or give him a torch, otherwise it'll look unnatural.
LadyHydralisk - Cute:) and a nice landscape too,
also like the foreign lettering on the sign.
Winstar - Very nice sketch. I don't know "leet"
so I'm lost on the translation, that is, if it's "leet".
KnightVision - good sketching, maybe the PS-brushwork
could be a bit sharper...
Pixel8 - Haha, good one! And nice 3d too, also like
the retro-style you chose.
Johnnyhorse - Like the church and the roughness.
Crustacean - nevermind, I like it, especially the sign
moonlit - nice character:)

mehz i like your pic, i really think the picture would have been more represented in a cartoon form. it just seems a bit rushed and i cant tell what style you were going for, but good job.
dan woah your pic is deep, i didnt get the true meaning of it untill you explained it in a later post. Before that i was just admiring the pretty work. good job.
Johnnyhorse That was the idea i had too! but i couldnt render or paint the trail that my travalers were going to be on so i threw together a road and a car. (sorta)

Dan: I didn't mean to imply that the topic was bad. I also like the freedom it gives. Your sketch is incredible! I understand it more now that you have explained the idea. I love the "closed heaven gates" the most. Very cool!
demdike: Very observant critique. I did rush the brush work. Your sketch is brilliant! Great concept.
Thanks to everyone who takes the time to critique. I really appreciate the feedback, and I'll make an effort to critique more often too.

September 27th, 2006, 08:40 PM
Knight Vision Well I do agree that more freedom in a topic makes it harder to produce results because you loose focus, why that's why I'm here. My reaction was towards the idea that it is hard to produce some conceptual idea to the topic; perhaps because I had plenty to spare after my first sketches, not really connection it then to actually producing the resulting sketch.
Further we could argue that a vague topic gives some people less motivation to produce.
I the fool baited one unsaid argument, I've already mention two others - to no big surprise. So I might have read too much in your comment, if so my blurb was aimed at a non-existent target and I'm sorry.

dan liimatta - nice drawing reminds me of a style I used to see in
mad magazine. I think you could ground the message more, you
have a lot to say which kind of needs something more to tie it all together.
demdike - very moody, simple I like it. Seems most people got
stuck on thinking of funny words to put on a sign rather than
a situation
Knight Vision - topical, good to see some issues being covered.
Somebody could take your idea further - no laughing at the
comedy show...
Chance.

Funny stuff here, good job everyone!
I probably used 45-60 minutes to this, fighting with anatomy and landscape issues... until I gave up. Learning is a rocky path, sometimes I feel like I'm hitting my head to a boulder.
http://www.houru.com/dsg/mountainnsign.jpg
Dan liimatta: I like your's the most, since that piece gives me new ideas of how to render lighting etc.
demdike: 30 mins? It always amazes me how fast you guys work. You probably have pretty solid "workflow". That's something what I've been trying to come up with for a long time.
Pixel8

Turni, keep at it! Looks like you did well on most of the anatomy and clothing, though the terrain is a little weak. Practice makes perfect - I've done worse! (Probably will again, too.)
What interests me in this one is the sign itself. The lines seem well-conceived and make me wonder if you have a strength in mechanical or architectural renderings?

Not quite, I first posted a rougher version (follow the link below my pic), that took me 30min.
Then I found the time to edit the pic, which took me
another 30 min. So all in all, it took me an hour:)

Demidike Haha, an optical illusion sign. It's great, it almost has an oil painting feel to it.
Only problem, and I'm nitpicking as well, is that I don't think the cylinders will always be read as a confused party.

It's been forever since I've done one of these. And I can't seem to find any black ball point pens that actually work.. so I settled for a blue one. Just pen, no pencil prior sketch.
