hello everybody!

Welcome to my sketchbook. Feel free to critique or leave comments, or just have a look. I dont have much drawing and painting experience, but have taken some life drawing classes. Lately i have been reading a lot and made some studies. I have also taken a sketching course recently.

Better things at the bottom, of course.

Hey, I stole your sketchbook virginity!:P
Anyway, this thing's off to a nice start. There's a good variety of stuff in here. I like that giraffe/beetle, and the face on the first image is excellent. I actually prefer the falling razor idea to your current CoW. It's a strange idea, and a pretty cool image, and with a good description behind it, it would be very interesting. Your newer entry is good, anyway. However, the color saturation in the shadows is too high. Shift it over to the grayer side of the spectrum (not too gray!), and it'll be good.
My main crit at the moment is to clean up your style a bit. Try some softer, more subtle strokes on your next pencil sketch, and make the edges a bit harder and clearer in your digital work.
You're off to a pretty good start! I'll be checking back.

a chair... boring, but fun!!!

And a school mini project.

Wow! These drawings are quite strong. Very nice.
Some crits: That red guy that became your avatar is not positioned clearly in space. He looks to be about the same distance from us as the "Dr. Mek" sign, yet he's standing right on the horizon line. The chair painting is dark and moody, and I like that feeling, but I still think that there should be a bit more contrast between the chair and the background.
You need some more comments in your sketchbook! My advice would be to just visit as many other sketchbooks as possible, and hopefully they'll return the favor.
Nice update!

an orthographic I thought I would use for the character of the week activity, but it took another direction.

Well, hörs/ses i skolan type stuff, hej hej

Chr
October 15th, 2006, 05:44 PM
j a k e thanks! Yes the ortho is a bit dull. I should have tested different designs before i started to render.

Big Poppa hej! man kan nog få lite bra tips här ifall man har en skissbok, men den största anledningen att starta en är nog att det är ett sätt att motivera sig till att göra något. kanske.. vi ses i skolan!

Last weeks contribution... very sketchy.

Hellu again (this post is, just for the hell of it, in english wow)!

The lighting and stuff on the old guy robot is pretty neat, he looks really metal:y (something I have great problems with). I also totally dig the fact that there are three whole pages (not here, but I know they exist ;) ) with thumbnails of the robot dancing joyously! Sweet! :D
There's one thing I've been sort of thinking about though, concerning the robot design: It sort of looks very much like a human, anatomy-wise (well, if you'd say that a robot had anatomy of course), almost like a human wearing really neatly figure-cast body armor or something. Is this a conscious decision, or is that just how it turned out?
I know that I sometimes have a problem with not being able to draw humanoids...not humanlike if you will. Like if I'm to draw a frog man, he gets human anatomy and a frogs head, that sort of stuff. Could this be a case of the same thing? :)

(and oh yeah, I got a sketchbook now, go check it out! :) )

Chr
October 18th, 2006, 05:39 AM
Big Poppa hello! i think the robot/human thing is partly conscious and partly not. i thought about how the robot should be able to move. if the robot hase the same degree of freedom as a human its joints should look somewhat like a human. but how it bends should show also on the surface since it has no soft skin. but some lines vere just scribbles that looked good, so i kept them. actually its shoulders doesnt make sence. now it cant raise them to the sides.

vehicles: they turned out better than i expected. copic markers c1 to c5, different pencils and "tipex"

Chr

very sketchy sketches ;) I do a lot of these. Pretty mindless. No ideas behind, but fun. I think they look a bit too generic tough and unfinished of course.

Yep, pretty nice :)
Are those vehicles the updated versions? I thought they had more contrast "live"... very cool nontheless. I should do more color studies as well...

Moai
October 19th, 2006, 10:37 AM
Damn, Chr! Those are some nice vehicles! I like the sketches in the last update as well. They have a nice loose feel to them. My only suggestion would be to fill the pages a bit more.

Hey, man! Good stuff in here! The tech-designs and the enviro-stuff from post #6 vibed most with me... I'll come back with more constructive stuff some time... hehe... you study with Björn? Suddenly realized there were more Skövde-people here... haha..

DannySketch Thanks!!

mouths and faces

I probably should put more time in this and try to only post the good things here.

Big Poppa
October 25th, 2006, 03:16 PM
Nice faces! :) Are they ref:ed or something? Well they look nice anyways, I really like the first one, it's got a nice realistic, yet surrealistic feeling to it.
And you managed to draw a LOT of dinosaurs at sketch night too I see. And they look good too, I especially like the page with the long-necked one and the little bike riding dude, hehe :D

How's the self protrait coming along btw? Those mouths wouldn't be studies for it now, would they? ;)

Chr
October 25th, 2006, 03:29 PM
Big Poppa thanks!

I got lazy on the self portrait. so i did no painting.

Yes, for the mouths i used a mirror.

I think i copied the biking dinosaur from a book i read a long long time ago. so i feel a litle bad about that ;)

Edit: added two speedpaints... im experimenting with color

October 25th, 2006, 04:40 PM
Those are some sweet looking mouths and noses, Chr. Your faces have a lot of character and life in them.
Speedpaints are great for experimenting with color. Have fun with them!:rendered:

Moai Thanks! Im having fun with them. also very confusing.

I played around with colors the curves feature and hue/saturation on the robot below.

Hi there, I like what I'm seeing. The way you handle perspective looks very confident. The vechicles are sweet, and the animals at the top, show us some more pencil drawings. You drew those in a bold way I like.

The faces need work, mu suggestion is start at the bottom, work from the skull and up, the muscles that affect the mouth when you smile and look deppresed. It helped me and I think it will help you to.

Hugs!

Great work. I really like that self-portrait in post 3. Keep on with the gestural line. Produce some simple color pieces, still lifes and portraits.

that's some really nice work, i love the cat and the dog from the first post ! :)
keep it up, cheers

Chr
November 27th, 2006, 04:31 PM
saa thanks! yes tha cat is 'ok' in the values i think... but a bit rough..

saa
November 27th, 2006, 04:36 PM
rough isn't automatically equal to bad or technically undeveloped.
i think a rough drawing/painting can be much more interesting than an overpainted boring piece...it depends.

the cat and the dogs for example are really nice. also like the new one, cheers

Great paintings and great animal drawings - it looks like you are comfortable in both pencils as well as pixels. Some really impressive stuff here.

I did notice one strange thing - for the latter entries, all of your male figures have very little or no hair at all...? The gals aren't bald (of course), but a whole lot of the guys are...maybe it's a theme or coincidence, but give us guys some hair too! :)

Chr
November 27th, 2006, 04:55 PM
madhatter106 hehe... yes I should put hair on them... but Ihave been concentrating on the skull for a while and being afraid of drawing hair... maybe i should try that out. thanks for mentioning it, I almost forgot!

saa yes, I agree with you about roghness. especcially if something is spot on from the first time its great...

Chr
December 14th, 2006, 12:50 PM
tried to think about core and colors when doing simple things...

The particles on the ground look really good. Also, good atmospheric perspective, and good job separating the planes on the rocks. What it needs, though, is a center of intrest to give are eyes something to do besides wander down the canyon.
Good to have you back.:rendered:

Bendragon
February 15th, 2007, 07:32 PM
These are very nice. You have quite a strong foundation. I would say colour is your least strongest point though. A lot of practice will help this area forward. Then we'll see from there! :)

Chr
February 16th, 2007, 06:07 AM
thanks Bendragon

heres an update

What it needs, though, is a center of intrest to give are eyes something to do besides wander down the canyon.

I tried cleaning it up a bit. Didnt add any big centre of interest though. Maybe ill add something. Maybe something human built.

Moai
February 16th, 2007, 05:23 PM
Didnt add any big centre of interest though.
Your center of interest doesn't have to be big and impressive. You could just do something subtle, like but a bigger reflection on that foreground boulder to give it more contrast. Or, you could redo the boulder and make it a statue or have some other evidence of human design. Or, you could add a doorway or cave mouth on the side of the canyon and have some light flickering out of it. Infinite possibilities!
The shimmering particles on the ground look damn good and give the piece a very lifelike sheen. You've gotten much better at lighting and color, I think.

Chr
February 18th, 2007, 03:54 AM
heres one with a centre of interest.

Its meant to be the same enviroment. Further down the path.

A little bit too much generic fantasy, but not that obvious...

Try using a photoshop brush with pressure sensitive opacity, I find that it makes sketching in photoshop a lot easier and more flexible. I really like your pencil stuff, it has a lot of character.( im assuming you have a wacom)?

cheers.
