View Full Version : DSG 1126: Fantasy: THE HAIRY OFFER WHITISH PIECES OF THE HAIRLESS TO THE EATING GOD
William b. Hand
September 23rd, 2006, 06:48 PM
[ Something rather grim today. ]
[ This can be interpreted in quite a few ways, but hopefully you understand the basics... ]
[ There will be some rather hairy creatures (not necessarily human) that are offering the the mutilated remains of some sort of hairless creatures (maybe human) to sate the limitless appetite of what they regard as a god (probably something frightening). ]
[ Perhaps that makes things clear? ]
[ At any rate, I'll follow this up with something palatable. ]
[ ;) ]

As this contain some nudity, invert nudity even, and some gore - should I stick with the url, or would the IMG tag do as well?
as for now - THE HAIRY OFFER WHITISH PIECES OF THE HAIRLESS TO THE EATING GOD (http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/4937/bloodyxa5.jpg)
just over 2 Hours in photoshop.
Critisism wanted of course :P

I didn't really want to have a frightening tone, so I opted for the brighter, happier version :). I'm still trying to grasp the basics, and I think practice is the best way to go. Enjoy :scribble:.

How the hell was this topic thought up???
Dan, I'm going to start really looking forward to each new post of yours. Yours is so wonderful. The only crit i have is that the background's perspective doesn't seem right... I think the vanashing point should be much higher up. Likewise, just clean up the light rays--too much photoshop brushesstrokes ;)
Saaruto, I love that creature, and the 'whitish piece" is hillarious

Dan liimatta: It's excellent! If I have to make a crit... would that white guy really be alive after that???
Horsefly
September 24th, 2006, 09:03 AM
Ended up being too much Jabba Da Hut and the whole thing didn't really come together too well. Also forgot about the 'white' part. :er:
[Edit] - Total boob on this one. I just realised I got the hairy/hairless the wrong way around too. Grrr... Must pay more attention! :(
http://bluntedtaffer.50megs.com/speedpainting/DSG1126.jpg
dan liimatta: Really kickin' ass today. Love everything about it - particularly the poor guy's pleading face and hand outstretched. Great stuff!
Saaruto: I like the creatures extended lower jaw... and ofcourse the cake is a funny touch.

Johnnyhorse but, but, the brush strokes are holy... well yeah I agree, I will look into i later, and the perspective lines.
DrFx magic of course!
Horsefly The atmosphere in your DSG is fab yet again, though I was pondering how the furries sacificed the hairless, but thanks for claring that up ;)
& Thanks for the positive replys, I really should have started posting here earlier as it really helps me produce rather then dream and ponder away at life (2 years of inactivity ftl).

Previous version (http://www.j-stengade.dk/1126.jpg).
PS: Difficult to crit, really good sketches.
Saaruto: I find the apple in the foreground really distracting - unless I missed something, and it has relevance to the scene.

Only the bravest warriors of the prrha's tribe dare to feed the eating god,
who in it's frenzy unaware has eaten many.
Don't like the meat but couldn't fix it, sketched with fineliners, PS, 2 hours
http://home.arcor.de/wildreizehn/fliflaflo/DSG/eatingGod.jpg
Edit:
Added one of the warriors, they were too small in the main pic;
the god altered their shape to turn them into better huntsmen.

critiques:
dan liimatta - Just plain awesome! Great micemen(?), everythings soo
detailed and I like the textures/brushstyle. The eating god's mouth reminds
me of the sandworms from dune:)
Saaruto - nice approach, the whole sushilike-idea is hilarious:) Apart
from that, as you said, practice, it'll pay off.
Horsefly - I like this shot. I agree on the StarWars-copyright-infringement,
but the lighting in this pic is great! Too bad you flipped them,
but I also enjoy pleading hairy and grim hairless.
Crustacean - cool. only thing left to crit is that the row of hairy ones
doesn'T exit the picture's frame, that is, if you were aiming at an endless
procession of hairy offerers.
Otherwise, this is great, especially like the ancient eating god

in here, all the gods are either fat or statue-like... really typical:P anyway, I'm back online again, maybe I'll do this one...

Any humans caught by the apes of Gragoom will be offered to the eating god, but only after they have suffered the long process to prepare them, and bleech their color.

I've got my image finished, but isn't there a way to use an attachment manager, rather than upload to another site??

From what I have been told, the upload manager has been disabled for this particuler section.

Pixel8 Imageshack works wonders for me, and with managers for firefox it gets even better ;)
Crustacean Again spot on, I really like their god and the environment.
demdike The buddah of food, I really like it and it is probably my favorite of the bunch so far.
They both feel tragic, for who wants to trap your own god as in your piece demdike, and when trapped you are still forced to feed hem at the risk of your peoples own lives. Not to mention the parade of gloom to the gluttonous god, in Crustacean creation. Both in this humanity are excellent :)
(I tried to capture this as well, how the mice-men are not ravenous or horrid, but calm and mellow, they wish this not, it is their god that craves it)

Good call, demdike, tried to fix the issue with the broken line, as well as up the gloom a bit. Kudos on your god, he looks truly menacing.
God-points to winstar and horsefly as well. Creaturedesign goes to dan (really odd combination of cartoony vs splatter vs big bulky muscles).

Hamsta - good god. I like the victim in the front, getting dragged
along at the leg. Overall, the hairy's shapes are a bit vague though.
Winstar - Looks mean. Maybe the rocks/cliff could be tinted
slightly with some color, otherwise the BW stands out too much in my eyes.
Pixel8 - Very cute god:) Looks like you used just one light source, therefore
the parts unlit are completely black, maybe another light,
a filler could add to the mood.
dan liimatta - thanks a lot. I indeed wanted to blame it all on the god,
his greed causing nothing but harm and mayhem.
Crustacean - Thanks as well, the parade's great
and I also like the way you cropped the new version,
better focus compared to the previous:)

Wow, everyones' looks so good, especially considering the specific topic. I'm not sure if I have energy for this one... I spent most of it on the CHOW due today (check it out if you want, it's the only painting i've ever finished, hah).
Demdike, that lighting is superb, and it took me 3 glances to realize those little things were people... I love it, it's so cool

Well, we can't very well have an eating god looking cute, now can we?? Hopefully, it's a little more menacing, in a swampish, Jason and the Argonauts kind of way! :rendered:

No way, demdike! I like the fact that CA is open to harsh critique. Your comment was not harsh, and was true. New DSG is fun, too. Topics are bizarre, but challenging, and people actually comment now.
Thanks!
I was trying to do 3D because I want to get faster and thought DSG would be a good stock of challenges, but MAN is it ever hard to do on a fast timeline. Guess that's the point though. Looking forward to the next one.

I've noticed a lot of the posted artwork looks very dark (almost unreadable) on my screen, but when I check the DSG on a friend's computer (who's brightness is much higher), I can see the intended image.
I've used Adobe Photoshop's Gamma Loader in my startup, and my digital prints (printed on Costco's Noritsu with auto-corrections off), turn out just as intended. Is my screen not calibrated correctly, or is anyone else having this same issue?
Pixel8: Sketching in 3D? Thats gotta be time consuming, but kudos to you for doing it! The more things you create, the more you will have available to throw into a scene and alter it to fit the DSG. Cool stuff!
Demdike: Very imaginative! I really like this one.
Now for my interpretation of hairless whitish pieces...

omg i think im late : P
(gave up on the hairy creatures.. couldnt for the life of me get them to look like more than just big furry blobs :X)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y200/holyrebelion/eating.jpg
Dan: wow... disturbing @_@ lol but awsome! (thanks for your comment yesterday, i feel much better haha) if its a crit you want though, the only one i'd have is perhaps on the lights. They seem a bit off... : / (i think johhnyhorse mentioned this too) otherwise, another stunner!
Saaruto: looks like a pokemon :D and yeah, as johnny said, your interpretation of 'whitish piece' is hilarious :P
Horsefly: again, your work simply amazes me! wonderful texture in your works, inspiring stuff.
Crustacean: amazing !!! thats the one of the best here thus far i think, its so atmospheric @_@, i'd love to see it bigger though.
Moon: good attempt at getting detail in, you might find that planning what your going to draw (doing a layout) might help you establish your subjects better on the page
Dem: the style of ur stuff is superbly cool... especially the buddah (spelling...) great work !
Hamsta: Interesting idea, though its a little too blurry (and small) to make out the details on the dudes and trees... perhaps try using a harder brush to really bring out your subjects.
Winstar: your 'earth god' face inspired mine : P (particularily the eyes) ... sweet effect : )
Pixel8: Dem was right about the 1st one being a bit too cute, the second one is great. And like Knight said, lots of respect for doing it in 3d. (personally i find 3d modelling a pain in the ass =p) nice work !
Knight: hahha interesting twist : ) never woulda thought of that. good one!
Blue: I'm really diggin your style as well, its sketchy, but cool. And just with a standard brush too ! i've a lot to learn =p
Aga: another interesting take on the topic. smart little creatures if you ask me, though im not sure the god appreciates his food with planks of wood haha! great colours! :O

I think Crustacean has the best overall scene.
Demdike's is the most like an eater
Winstar's is the most god-like (scary beast)
Knight Vision has the most creative interpretation
Holy Rebellion's is creepiest and bloodiest so far!
cya!

Pixel8 - Good to hear that:) I'd suppose that 3d is pretty hard to do in the 90
minutes maximum recommended, Kudos to that. Oh, and thanks for the ranking;)
Knight Vision - Cunning! Lovely Sketch and nice shading, love it.
Blue Severin - Impressive, very nice and loose technique. Small crit:
the mountain in the front/offering stone blends too much
with the background, should be darker or the BG lighter.
Aga - Sharing the inofficial innovation-award for uniqueness
with Knight Vision, the idea's outstanding. One thing,
the water seems to flaot above the waterfall's beginning
due to the dark edge below it.
holyrebellion - Plain scary, the victim being naked adds greatly
to the impression of weakness and hopelesness.
Thanks for the crit on mine, I appreciate it a lot:)
goran - Cool as usual. Like the blood flowing from the hairless,
the hairy are a bit hard to spot though.

Hi there :)
My nick is Chanur and about two weeks ago, i stumbled over the scetchbook thread of masque. So i read myself through the forum and watched all the great artworks around here. Reading the DSG thread infected me with the virus and so i decided to give it a try. I'm not very good in 2d art and I used my graphpad mainly to draw textures for my 3d models. So here's my very first - humble - try on entering the DSG. Hope its not too bad for you :)
Ok, now shoot and throw your critics at me *ducks*

holyrebelion glad you came over the initual bump, now let the creations roll out and have fun doing it.
goran Visually stunning as usual and I really like the god and the victims. The conceptual negative is that I do have a problem forming a view of the hairy carriers, though that might be better for the illustration overall.
Chanur Welcome to CA & the DSG, and practice makes better; have fun. As for the piece I am missing the white skinned offering concept wise, and images wise my biggest problem is the lack of depth.

demdike- on the first pict, there is sth in the design of the pedestal, what doesn't work well, imo, but I dont exactly know what. ;)
but about the sec one I like all of that quick sketch. The way how it is drawn, the design of creature, his pose. Fast energetic sketch
holyrebelion- maybe it would be easier to draw this furry creatures when you start from the sketch with their anatomy (the bones or the main parts of their bodies) but without fur so far, and than when they will be ok, add new layer and cover them with fur
Hamsta
September 26th, 2006, 12:35 PM
holyrebelion At first glance I understand what's going on, but than I looked some more, and realised that I don't, really. :dur:
The human has a very odd position. Greys and reds are dramatic, but maybe you could have pulled even more out of the combo.
demdike Your fat guy is fabolous! the rest isn't as good, the floor in particular strikes me as half done.
Are those tiny dancers surrounding the big slab? are they fishing lures?
demdike
September 27th, 2006, 05:19 PM
Aga and Hamsta, you're both right about the floor, I simply
couldn't find a way to add a lot of detail without it taking hours to
accomplish...the tiny dancers are serving food to the god, he's imprisoned
because he's too dangerous/eats his believers. They sure feel like
fishing lures, but don't intend to be some.
