Hi, am opening a site with all my illustrations soon. Heres a example of what to expect,

anyway I have been looking around here and it seems many people use the "textured" background effect. I don't quite understand how you could do this in photoshop, I mean the texturing would be pretty easy but I scan my drawings in...I would have to go around my images bit by bit with the lasso tool for ages and even if I did surely it would mess up my lines...I mean everyone who does this seems to keep their natural writing in the image, surely you don't go around the edges of your writing without corrupting it?!

Is there some sort of magic technique or filter I don't know about?, thanks in advance for any help!

Set your original sketch to "multiply", or something similar and slam a layer behind the sketch layer and fill with the texture you want. There are a lot of methods to accomplish this.

...as for your picture, keep working. It looks alright, but it lacks depth. Try doing some work with a reference, just to better grasp the anatomy and overlapping bulk.
