Alright gang, here's our sketchbook support group thread. Here we can discuss our objectives, post various things from our SB's that we want to get specific attention, notify each other of ideas for sketches and essentially let each other know what's going on without having to play PM tag :)

First, the list:

Julianna (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=68469)
Cordy (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=56842&page=3)
Aph (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=77926)
Cerbercus (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=77958)
jharford (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=996507#post996507)

A few general rules for our group. These are the only things that you HAVE to abide by.

1. Post one pic per day of the year in your own sketchbook. You don't have to have one for every single day, but whatever days you miss you must make up for (posting at least 3 pics after your 3-day vacation, etc)

2. Post at least one comment in someone's sketchbook each day (if they have updated daily) Constant feedback is one of the strengths of ca, and it shall be our strength as well :)

Whenever you comment on someone's SB (which should be one person's SB a day) your comments should be (besides supportive) constructive in some way. You should comment on at least one of the following:

- point out ways someone can improve in a certain area
- Give criticism on certain areas
- point out what you like about the picture/technique/etc

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's it. Keep those two rules in mind and we'll all have a Merry Christmas.

Now, onto our matters. For this first week, there's no special 'objectives' or little activities. Let's just get into the groove of posting every day and supporting each other first. In the future though, post ANY AND ALL IDEAS for group activities such as - everyone drawing specific things for the week/day, paintover activities, artistic scavenger hunts, anything.

Also, it would help if everyone in their first posts in this thread lists their longterm and shorterm objectives for their art. Here's mine to get the ball rolling;

Short term - Get better at drawing heads and people in general, work through loomis, and generally try to draw people as realistically as possible.

Long term - be very diverse. Once I feel people are turning out, I want to turn my attention to enviros, technical stuff, everything.

Finally, we need a name. I have no idea what number the sketchgroups are up to now, so I think we actually need a title of some sort. Sketchforce omega, the Sketchy people of sketchtown, the black strokes <- my fav so far... shout out any names you want and we'll see what sticks :)

Hello everyone.
After talking with Rhineville and being accepted into the SG, I will post now a bit about me :).

Short term - Improve my observation and ability to pick and mix colors from life. Also, learning and improving my anatomy and head drawing.

Long term - Develop and define a style I feel comfortable but not limited by. Drwaing heads and painting still lifes with confidence and the way I vision.

I'm currently in the games industry working as a modeler/3d artist. I'd like to improve my 2d in all aspects, but really non-digitally as it feels more satisying. I'd like to head to art school in the future. It's nice to meet all you guys, look forward to learning more about you and helping out with all your sketchbooks.

Once we are all done with introductions, i'll post one pic from my thread.

Good to have you. One thing I forgot to mention was that I wanted to get better at colour and hopefully do painting other than digital. I admire your diligence in painting every day. In one year, you're going to be leauges ahead of where you are now. Can't wait to see the progression :)

EDIT: Oh, I'll also be gone for the rest of the night, so if anyone has any questions post it in here and I'll get back to it later. Also, Jhartford, go ahead and post whatever you want now, I think we also need to have some images in here every so often or else it MAY get locked :(

Welcome everyone~

Short term- Obtain the motivation to draw daily, and improve overall anatomy, environment and digital drawing skills.

Long term- Eventually have better confidence in my skills. I want to be able to draw from imagination as well as I can draw from life.
Last but not least, I want to make an awesome portfolio for the shcool I wanna get into.

Alright guys, one week into this thing and I think we're all going pretty strong. Cerbercus seems to be gone though, no update to my pms or in his sb....

Alright, who thinks we need a little activity for this week? draw the whole body from skeleton to fingers week? Draw X number of certain object week? draw completely from imagination week?

throw some ideas out there and lets see what sticks!

JM
September 29th, 2006, 11:30 PM
Let's start off with the skeleton.

aph
September 30th, 2006, 05:37 AM
Skeleton sounds good. Maybe make it a study on the section of body you want to do the most, but as best as you can do? Hmm. Donno =D.

Cerby should be back, he will just be slow starting, I'll text him and annoy him today.

Jason Rainville
September 30th, 2006, 11:08 AM
Ok, so here's my idea: this week we have to have at least one drawing of each:

- the complete skeleton
- the full figure with muscles on it (no skin)
- arms
- legs
- hands/feet
- head/neck
- full figure

can be from any ref and from any angle. starts and ends on monday. sound good?

JM
September 30th, 2006, 11:22 AM

Hey guys,

Sorry for my inactivity here. Not because I haven't wanted to be! But things have been going on in my life that meant I couldn't draw much last week let alone upload any of my work. But this week things are back to normal so you can expect me to be a regular member on here!!

Sorry again! Take care people =D

Thought I'd post my short and long term objectives here cause of my lack of activity I haven't done so yet!

Short Term -

Get my creatiye juices flowing again after a troublesome summer
Draw anything and everything I think of
Do at least two pages of my sketchbook each and every day
Long Term -

Develop a personal visual language
Loosen up my style of illustration and explore and experiment with different media
Work my hardest to meet deadlines and push myself to break my creative limits

Just an idea that I've been thinking of lately and I can't get it outta my head!

Select one or more fictional character's that we all have to draw in our own ways and then submit, explain choices for showing them how you did, and then critique (not the ideas necessarily, more the drawing techniques)

What's you think?

Jason Rainville
October 5th, 2006, 06:23 PM
I think that's a great idea cerb, that'll get our creative juices flowing quite nicely :)

Sorry about the slow skeleton updates, homework is hitting me, plus I have to go back home for thanksgiving which will no dobt soak up some of my time. Ima try to at least get some skeleton pics up tonight :)

Jason Rainville
October 8th, 2006, 09:18 AM
Sorry, Omega, but this is only one sketchbook support group of many. It's wise to ask (personal message) someone in the group if you can be a part of it. Unfortunately, we've stopped allowing other people in to try to make it easy to keep track of everyone's sketchbook.

If you'd like to join a sketchbook, look around in the lounge for the 'sketchbook support group thread' and make a post stating you'd like to join someone's sketchbook. Best of luck :)

On topic, I highly doubt that I will get all of my stuff done for monday. Being at the parents house, I don't even really have any decent refs here. Hopefully I can squeeze something in...

A slight update to the rules:

Whenever you comment on someone's SB (which should be one person's SB a day) your comments should be (besides supportive) constructive in some way. You should comment on at least one of the following:

- point out ways someone can improve in a certain area
- Give criticism on certain areas

Basically, don't be a DA immitator. "Good job!" "very cool!" and "I like it!" are not very constructive.

I agree with you there rhine ( got to nip and edit my last reply lol ),.

Look forward to seeing more from all you guys.

People, how did you all get on with the project?
We need to be more active and update this thread more often!

Anyone got any ideas for the next project?? We need to stick to deadlines and then show the work for them!!

How about everyone subscribe to this thread and also to everyone elses sketchbooks threads?? That's what I've done, it lets me keep on top of things!

so.... how about cerb's idea?

cerbercus
October 13th, 2006, 05:21 PM
I think we should work on something more technical first... I was just throwing around an idea I had in my head. Hows about

portraits and facial features

??

Jason Rainville
October 13th, 2006, 06:52 PM
Sure thing. Lets all try to get our anatomy done and work on faces and their features as well. C'est bon?

JM
October 13th, 2006, 11:24 PM

Aye, tis a plan. =]

Jason Rainville
October 14th, 2006, 04:33 PM
I don't think I can be a part of this anymore. I can't get into art at all lately, and doing these studies feels like work, and what's worse, work that I can't even finish.

I'll see what next week is like, but all this week I pick up my SB, try to draw from life, get frustrated, stop. Pick it up again, try to draw something from imagination, get frustrated, stop.

aph
October 15th, 2006, 05:31 AM
It can become a bit of a drag sometimes, everyone feels like that eventually I think, no matter how good they are, they feel defeated. It'd be a shame for you to stop dude! You'e improved so much. All I can advise is drop the study stuff for a while and concentrate on doing art that you enjoy, experiment, develop, throw some paint around.
I hope you can get through it duder =). This part is the one thing we cant really help you on other than to say that you are improving and its only because your challenging yourself to get better that you feel this way. Remember that you learn more through failure than sucess, even though it'd be nice to get it right all the time, its part of the learning process. Let us know what you decide to do. Good luck.

jharford
October 15th, 2006, 05:56 AM
Hey there Rhineville
I know the exact feeling you have.. but you must think of studies as fun...discovery...progression of your knowledge...practice for shading.. they are great to further your development as an artist. Studies should be fun , not regimental training..I think then you learn more..

I hope you stick with us man, your an inspiration...

Jason Rainville
October 15th, 2006, 11:46 AM
Like I said, I'll see what next week is like. I'm not looking for 'suport' (IE attention) on this, I'm just letting you guys know a bit ahead of time that I may be leaving instead of just saying 'bye' and go on my merry way.

Aph, I try to draw what I want, but it still frustrates me to no end.

aph
October 15th, 2006, 04:50 PM
Well on the last point, not exactly what you want to draw, but how you want can sometimes be an aid. Finding something you can experiment and have fun with, but not have too much thinking or idea generation. Just concentrating on remembering that art can be fun =]

jharford
October 25th, 2006, 10:55 AM
Ok guys.
So i hope rhineville is still with us. and being the excellent leader he is!..

After discussing with Juli, We have decided to begin a short project.

Facial Features

The project consists of ;

I thought you guys would get the picure when I removed my name from the list of members and got rid of my sig. :(

I have no will to do art at all. The past few weeks have seen a lot of procrastination, both in free-time art development and homework. Nothing can really pull me out of it, god knows I've tried to put pencil to paper, but the sketchbook ends up half torn and thrown across the room (I'm seriously considering some kind of anger management, I'm starting to scare myself a bit). I'd much rather focus what useful energy I have on homework.

And, for the last time, I was never the 'leader' of this thing, as we all contributed ideas and such :) (I also don't want to think of myself as a leader, since if I was a terrible leader I'd be)

So I'll see you guys around, I'll check in on your sb's from time to time, and god-willing I'll update mine :)

jharford
October 28th, 2006, 04:41 PM

Here are mine.

Just so you know
