View Full Version : So when are we phasing out [img] tags entirely?

I remember jason saying he wanted to get rid of them entirely and have everything uploaded. As i surf through some sketchbooks, i have to sit and tap my finger because some people have servers housing their work which just CRAWL. At first i didn't like the idea of not being able to just use the [img] tag to link my work from my server, but even at times when my server is down i wish i just uploaded everything.
So i'm curious, are there still plans to phase the [img] tag out? I can honestly say i would like to see that happen, just so the work presented here won't ever be 'lost' to the black magic of the internet, and items being removed from foreign servers for unforseeable reasons.

I guess I could start useing the Attachment stuff, but , since I always posting my stuff on other forums aswell, not all though, I still gotta upload it, some forums got this annoying attachement function makeing guest unable to see witout logging in. And why does it hurt anyone useing IMG ?
Is it because this archiveing function ? that everyone is supposed to be able
to see old art ? Then ok, I start attaching my pics from now :P

Aye, it is rather depressing to see an old sketchbook that you really liked suddenly full of little red x's. :404sign:.

Well sometimes we link stuff from other sites, especially for lounge topics which won't be viewed 3 weeks from now, is it really worth filling up precious hard drive space? I mean, we won't NEED to see funny rambo kitten pics with insults on them in the LMS thread 2 years from now, will we? Maybe just recommending strongly that art be uploaded in art forums would be sufficient.

Yeah, I'm for limiting it to the "Finally Finished" and "Best Of CA" sections

And the 5 stars sketchbook in the Sketchbook section. I hate not being able to see what Jon foster did while back :/

i'm sure it could be limited to select categories. Most of the stuff posted in the lounge is of little consiquence down the line, but some sketchbooks and finished pieces are a tragedy to lose.

I haven't tried using it yet, but if you put up an attachment, is there a way to take it down later on down the line if your situation changes for whatever reason?

The problem lies with how expensive this can be especially with all of the members to take into account.
I can settle with what hito said really. But it is a shame to see some sketchbooks go.

You can Advance Edit your post and goto Manage Attachment, there you can click next to the attachments name "remove" or atleast that's what i recall.

Yep you can take it down, you can even add new images to an old post.

trouble is CA is notthe only place I show my work. and if I use CA serverrs I have to upload the same works again elsewhere to host it for non CA people. I mena I could force everyone I know to use CA. butthat would be silly
so Iusually upload to photo bucket of my own webspace so as to be able to do that
plus the attachment thingy kinda hates me sometimes.

It would be nice to add it to more areas of the forums, particulary the Weekly activities, where it is currently unavailable.
Also, some changes to the attachment manager wuld be nice. Like being able to upload more than one image at a time. It's a pain in the ass when you have lots of stuff to post and you have to upload 20 pics seperately.

I know I try to use the attachment manager whenever provided, but sometimes when I post that isn't an option. I'm not entirely sure why, but hotlinking for me is a last resort.

i agree...maybe sketchbooks aswell, but i'd hate having to re-upload all of those workshop photos just because img tags don't work anymore.

Well I specifically got my own webspace so I could host my own images for my sketchbook, and I have every last crappy drawing in my sb backed up so I can restore them when pb does eventually kill my accounts. I don't see why it should be mandatory, it's not like artists have any obligation to have old threads etc still showing images, or to make sure you get good speeds on the other side of the world. Sure it would be nice, but I think giving people the option is better.
Oh, and I really hate the 'attached images' box that goes around images...

Ditto.
I still try to use attached images most of the time, but I think it's ugly how they all get put on the bottom of the post in a big box. IMG tags let you format your posts a lot nicer, especially for multiple images. Attached images on previous posts also don't show up when you're responding to a thread, which makes giving crits harder. I have to open the thread in a new window and go back and forth as I'm writing.
I like that we're trying to archive as much art posted here as possible, but I don't think phasing out IMG tags is necessary.

i dont want to see them gone....
for all the reasons mentioned above, and also since you cant add any text between images on the image attachment function either... its really annoying since you usually want to add some sort of comment regarding the piece....

That only happens when the images aren't inserted into the post. It's more work, so I'm guessing some just don't bother or maybe don't know. Once the images are uploaded, you just gotta click on the paperclip again, and select which image you want inserted. This adds an attach# tag. My SB for instance is all attached images, and only my avatar has that border (don't look, just trust me). I do agree with the anoyance of the lack of images in the response though.

Yep, I had no idea you could do that. Thanks Derram, that's good to know.

Is there a way to insert those attached images so that you don't see the thumbnails, but the entire image?
EDIT; oh wait, I already have it :P the thumbnails only show up in the preview I guess ^^
Everybody read Derram's post! (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1036933&postcount=19)

ok, derram hopefully that will help sort out some of the confusion with how to attach and so forth,
but... the thing is that waronmars and chaosrocks bring up an interesting point--> this is not the only place where many of us show our work. personally my filenaming conventions and so forth are really crazy, and i like the system that i've developed.
I know this is asking a lot, but if there were some way that a CA user could run some utility on his or her thread, to backup the images with the tags, that would be a good compromise i think. Like, say after you've posted updates for a couple of weeks, maybe the site could prompt you to backup the thread (since, in fact, it will be aware that you were the one that created it) and then it could download and store the images. This kind of thing is what computer automated processes do so well, and conversely we human beings run out of patience for.
i will readily admit my laziness here, but I really do not want to go back through all the pages of my sketchbook and attach the images, plus use the paperclip option to place the images.
I know that all of these things are being worked on, so we should just manage the best we can until it's all fixed :) you have to admit that since MB switched Conceptart.org to the new server/host things have been really, really good. even 3.0 has been working really well. so i ain't complaining :)
errr... except for the fact that
I REALLY WANT TO EDIT MY SKETCHBOOK TITLE
