This calls for something really freakish to help me put a lid on all the frustration no blurb is causing :upset:

My beastie lures those sweets kids with candy and toys, then devours the heads slowly alive in its stomachs, the goo is at the same time regenerative and decaying. The nose is there to smell the approaching children, thus the size, and the eyes to lovingly see those prettie faces as he muches on their bodies.

My first post on the CA forums! This is also my 1st painting....ever. I did it in Photoshop with a tablet, and took about an hour and a half...I'm kind of a new to this (as you can see :)), and I was wondering, should I be posting in the DSG? Or should I hold off until I get some more experience, because some of these are really good! The whole painting itself is kinda funky (especially the bridge), and it isn't really something freakish. Oh well, here goes nothing:

Anyone can post in the DSG, if you're a member of CA. I've been doing these as a way to get some practice, we all need practice.

my 1st post here too =)

(this is inspired after playing more splinter cell than is probably good for my health : P)

not sure if sam fisher classifies as 'something freakish' but if i was a bad guy i'd sure be freaked. hope u guys like ... (its really rough i know, but i ran out of time :X)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y200/holyrebelion/underthebridge.jpg

Kanoa: thats cool, i like how if you look closely, its really just a collection of squiggles, but from afar, it has form and style... really like the roughness and freedom in yours.

Dan: wow... i feel insignificant. : (

Demdike: Awsome cartoony quality in yours, ive been so used to using a soft brush, i forget sometimes how good a hard-edge on the brush can be !

Saaruto: its great that your posting (good to see im not the only first-poster around here : P). The colours are nice and bold on yours, but the bridge is a little jumbled. The shadows on the creatures kinda makes it look like they're just stuck on top. You'll get much better with practice, tablets take a bit to get used to as well. Personally, i think you should try starting by drawing things from reference images to learn how shadows and shapes work (even the best are still learning!). Keep drawing!

Mehz: Nice pencil sketch : P is that zoro underneath the bridge @_@ i love zoro ^____^

Crustacean but I wanted your pwnage again, still pretty neat.
holyrebelion Welcome, and thanks, and don't. I as most are here to learn, and if you diminsh yourself you might as well keep that up for life, after all we have people like Rembrant at the vanguard. Besides at some point we all held crayons in our fists as we drew our first lines on paper, and in the end we all die. Just keep it up and try to improve yourself. As for your piece I'm missing some freakishness, but overall pretty nice.
Saaruto Welcome, and as Armando wrote this is practice, if you can't dare to fail you will never win in the end.
KanoaRogers Nasty, for freakishness you win so far :P

Yep... another entry firmly rooted in the tentacle camp. Tried to create a damp decaying feel to the environment.

http://bluntedtaffer.50megs.com/speedpainting/DSG1125.jpg

demdike: Nice one. Your hard lines give the bridge a nice rickety look to it. Love the purple/brown combination on the blobbies - very gloopy looking.

dan liimatta: Great design and details. The transparent blobs showing previous victims skulls is a wicked idea. Nicely rendered but my only problem is the girls face - looks flat to me for some reason. might be the purple sky and the shadow.

KanoaRogers: Dig the creature design. I like the way it's appendages seem to be squeezing/crushing the bridge.

Mehz: Ok, you've got me... what is it? :tihi:

Saaruto: Welcome. The DSG's should be a great way for you to improve your skills. As for your entry, I think the bridge kinda dominates the image too much but as it's your first painting ever I'd say you did well on the stonework. Hope you stick around.

holyrebelion: Welcome to you too. I have to say I wouldn't class Sam as freakish, but I really like the angle and the curved architecture. Nice job.

Crustacean: Only a quickie but I do like the idea of attacking a train. Pitty you didn't have time today.

It's the notorious Troll Ninja, so named for his fondness of executing his assassinations on bridges.
P.S. Awesome bridge, Horsefly.

I loved demdike's idea on how it feeds on suicidals ;p.

A spider dragon is a revolting beast that salvages rotting corpses and uses the decomposing matter to create it's freakish egg sacs.

This one calls the underside of a dis-used bridge home.

@KanoaRogers- That pic reminds me of Half Life 2 for some odd reason, good job on the drool

@Dan Liimatta- Very original, I like the expression on the creatures face

@Demdike-A monster that devours suicide jumpers, heh, I could see that being an artifact of evolution. You have nailed the 'gooey' effect, love it.

@HorseFly- Can never go wrong with tentacles:P the water and algae covered walls set the atmosphere nicely.

(I decided to try and sharpen the image more and bring in more attention to detail)

well, I was just doodling, and I came up with this awkward creature thingy...and I said to myself "That should go under a bridge!". Well, here is just a sketch of it. No value in it yet, just a sketch.

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/2615/dsgagainvjh7.jpg

I was thinking that the creature would kinda just rip a time-space hole in the road, and drag unsuspecting cars into it's belly. And that "thing" at the bottom is a flaming belch. :)

Horsefly I really like your piece, and the enviroment is reallt nice. & Thanks, for you (oh and myself) I fixed the girl.
Johnnyhorse I enjoy the atmosphere in it, and the composition - while your freakish monster is perhaps the one I most ponder over, that is how will it strike and what will it do, it thus intrest grows.
Goran My favorite of the bunch, I really like your B&W pieces and this is hardly an exception.
AlphaDMF Considering all the tentacles and hanging lumps from most of us I would say you have one of the more orginal creatures, and of course still keeping the freakish lump as a sack. & thanks.

dan liimatta - Awesome! the girl, as pointed out below is the weakest part,
but I'm in love with the rest, great rendering, great detail and these skulls...!
KanoaRogers - Cool sketch and cool coloring, like it a lot.
Mehz - Funny. Like it, may it be rushed or not. Closeup's probably too "Smiley",
otherwise very nice.
Saaruto - Welcome aboard, explorer! Congrats on your first painting, it's good you dared!
Personally, I like the monsters/shadows and the sky is quite nice. But you got to improve your
perspective and water's everything but blue, mind your reflections;)
For your second post: VERY good thinking/concept, but it's hard to read.
Maybe becomes clearer when it's colored
holyrebelion - Welcome too you as well:) Good shot, not bad. I agree on the brushes,
blurry will only do the job when you're dealing with very soft shadows or some parts of mist/clouds,
but sometimes even those have sharp edges...
Crustacean - Lovely quickie, great colors and atmosphere.
Horsefly - Tentacles rule! Very good water and impression of space,
the texture looks "layered atop" sometimes.
AlphaDMF - A bit blurry and maybe too bright, but I like the spider's web and the rotten colors.
Brightdreamer - Good shot, poor minotaur(?)
goran - Superb! like the misty disappearing of the bridge and the excellent tentacles.
Hamsta - Nice comment as usual:D Like the painterly quality, maybe the tunnel is a bit too bright
ramonsk - good sketch, toonstyle! Will there be a colored version?
Johnnyhorse - Cool. Like it a lot and the Goo looks pretty gooish;)
moonlit - Don't you blame yourself, your entry's fine and you are welcome.
I'd say perspective's off on the waterfall but the rest is a nice "moonlit" scene:)

Another great DSG... on a roll.
Dan &Demdike, thanks for the compliments, both of yours are superb, as usual. Demdike, that's my favorite of yours so far. Dan, that updated girl scares the crap out of me, like, more than the monster lol (really well painted face though!).
Moonlit, your painting is quite good but your perspective is kind of wacky. Try looking up some seaside sunset pictures and note how the light reflects off the water.

Thanks for the crit's guys. :)

Mehz: Haha... It all seems so clear now. :}

demdike: I hear you on the textures. I usually only work with 2-3 layers, but got a little carried away trying to get the look I was after. Ned to work on my strokes to make them bolder.

dan liimatta: The girl looks much better now... infact I agree with Johnnyhorse: maybe 'looks better' is not the right choice of words - she's freakin' scarier than the creature! >:D

goran: Nice one.

demdike- cool, I like the contrast between the coloring and the hard strokes. Scanner Darkly- like.
Liimatta - I shit my drawers. Creepy concept.
KanoaRogers - I like your penwork- rough but expressive. Colors look like you watercolored over it. Nice job
Mehz - good idea. Would like to see you develop it a lil more.
Saaruto - welcome to the forums. Good start. Try working in monochrome to avoid being hindered with color. Focus on getting what's in your head down on paper.
HolyRebelion - Nice atmosphere- Sam's head looks a lil big tho.
Crustacean - Nice idea, good render of the bridge with quick strokes- would like to see it develop. Can't make out the creep (maybe that's intentional)
Horsefly - kicks ass. I love how you did the architecture and the arch. Also, the technique on the entire painting reminds me of a old weathered painting. Cool.

Man, too many to crit...will finish up later. In the meantime, here's mine:

AlphaD - freaky. I like how you painted the thing, especially his "membrainy" base where it's stuck to the bridge. The style of the bridge doesn't match the monster though.

Brightdreamer - we used to have a book at the library about witchcraft- had illustrations in the same style you did above- hella creepy for some reason.

goran - cool inkwork. I like the crosshatching

hamsta - that's one sticky dude. It woulda been cool to have him maybe leave bloodprints along the top of the tunnel where he was crawling.

ramonsk8 - good start. Check on the perspective of the floor alittle bit. Adding some shading would give some more atmosphere to the pic and make a big difference. (Oh yeah- what's he going to do with that ax, scratch the monsters butt? :) give the boy a chance to defend himself!!! Give him a bigger ax- baseball bat at least).

saaruto - I like your line quality so far- the variation in your strokes. You gonna develop the pic further?

johnnyhorse - man I really dig this. I can't really tell what's going on under the bridge, but the sillouette of the scene is really expressive (if that makes sense).

moonlit - It seems like you have a good sense of your light source, but look at a reference to see how light reflect off of water- it looks like you got a little carried away with the main reflection.

Blueseverin - I like the camera angle you used. Also, the design of the monster is really cool.

ashton - I was wondering how you got that look for your painting, then I saw that it is real paint. Cool- did you paint it on canvas, then scan it in? I like acrylics, but haven't had an opportunity to play with them too much other than a few cartoon murals for family. Oh yeah- Is that a prick?!?

winstar - I like the red of the monsters with the gray of the bridge. Cool lighting too.

Knight Vision - Is that a prick? ;)

Vulgar`

I'm late for the breakdown.

Demdike - Not bad, it gives me a sense of gooeyness. Smuggling illegal dragon eggs past the golden gate.
Dan liimata - Best DSG I've seen in this section in a long time. You should spend some more time on it and make it a masterpiece! My only complaint is that the spider webs around the skull could look sharper in texture like strands of hair. They resemble cotton candy (Which also works, but not as much.) Expect a private message sometime.
KanoaRogers - In every Daily Sketch Group activity it's only once in awhile that someone defines the topic. You got it. A hanging, freakish, thing.
Mehz - Funny concept and contribution. One of the top 5 despite it's simplicity.
Saaruto - Good luck with drawing - I'm hoping to see you get active in this section and growing better and better. Don't dissappear.
Holyrebellion - Splinter cells in the basement. Nice entry - one mistake. The guard farthest on the right has a slightly arched back.
Crustacean - Not as polished as your usual, but it still has that unique vibe to it. Horizontal tornado express, how may I help you?
Horsefly - Another successful one from you, I'm feeling that Japenese smoke rising from behind me. It's painted well and achieves it's stance.
AlphaDMF - That meets the topic. The wall materials seem to be changing at every angle. Brick, wood, and something else near the top. Daily variety is a positive thing. Keep it up.
BrightDreamer - Reminds me of goran's style. Creative approach to the theme.
Goran - Good to see you posting. Quality image - I've grown accustomed to them when I see your username.
Hamsta - First person to draw a tunnel thenstead of a creature beneath a bridge entirely. Cool idea - but I feel that red isn't the right color. Maybe a swampy color.
Ramonsk8 - Can't see any bridge at first glance. I hope you can put more time forth next time. For what it is - not bad.
Johnnyhorse - My second favorite entry. Excellent perspective - the black brushstrokes are what appeal to me most.

I'll have to continue this later. Sorry guys.

LateNiteHype Hmm... This just isn't working, IMHO. Starting from the saturated yellow base, the soft brushes, the perspective problems. The creature is hard to read, especially the abdomen.
Composition might have something in it's favor, but I'm not sure about it either.

Anyways, stick around, keep worrking, you'll improve.
