Thanks guys. I posted the gorilla in my sketchbook because it was a quick revision based on some critiques. It's not enough different to repost on its own merits but still significant enough, to me, to at least put in my sketchbook.

The second one is a kind of word association exercise just to get the juices flowing. It's a pretty cool technique to combat artist block.

The first one is a little revision of a previous sketch. The goal was to make it more like something that would be seen on a saturday morning cartoon. I don't know how effective it was but it was fun.

Thanks again:D

Thanks Andrew. I'm enrolled at Westwood College for Video Game Art and Design. Right now I'm committed to doing 2d concept design but I've got some 3D classes coming up and I'm open to an adjustment if I like it enough. I figure whichever way I choose I'll always have the other as an option and I'm hoping that being functional at both 2 and 3D art will bolster my value to employers. Man is the competition stiff! Anyway I just hope I'm not spinning my wheels and digging myself an enormous college debt to get nowhere.

Very Nice, Jason!

Hey jason, I think you`re gonna go very fast in 3D with your understanding of form. In the end a good design an understanding makes all the difference when makin the "idea" you have on paper in 3D. Sure technically its demanding but with good teaching an advice things can go with relative ease. Im quite curious what you`re gonna be making next.
I know this because I experienced that drawing your ass off on a model sheet before starting in 3D, helps in infinte ways when modeling.

Jason Borne
November 26th, 2006, 11:37 AM
Thanks guys.

Hi Burnt. I'm going to Westwood College for Game Art and Design. It's not a true animation program. I imagine that's the source of the difference. I definitely prefer the animation element of Game design to the game design itself. I thought about transferring to an animation program but I think Westwood just phased it out.

Thanks Treks. It's cool man, clean line-work is one of those things that just comes with practice. You'll pick it up. Try not to sacrifice dynamism and excitement for the clean lines though. That's a common mistake and something I fight with all the time.

here's a self portrait.

Treks
November 27th, 2006, 06:04 PM
yeah, i find that although sometimes sketches can look really gritty they can still have a really nice dynamic to them that can captivate the eye. its all about balance. im slowly working. hopefully soon ill have just little sketches to put up. working on a huge project right now though. hah.

Love that windmill painting :) Motion studies are great too. Like the storyboard, although i think it would have more impact if the dark values in the panels where the trainer goes from happy to sad were reversed. As it is he's lighter when he's sad, and darker with more definition when he's happy... just think it might look better reversed. Master chief and dinos are fun too, keep up the good work.

Hey mate, first time to your sketchbook and I am very impressed. The way you shade is something I have not been able to do anywhere near your level. Your storyboards and quick paints inspire me as you have a very quick realistic way to draw. Respect- you've got a great future if it's not already in motion

I'm working really hard to try to understand lines and natural flow of characters, and you seem to have it hands down. Please please, post as much as you can.

Hi Jason,

Looking through your impressive sketchbook.

Quick sketches of environments are inspiring.
You're already a pro at digital paint. And still in school with all this work....you're going to hit the game industry already running!
I especially like your green fishie in post # 4. Well designed and painted. So craggy and toothy it's cute. :]
All the character stuff is especially interesting to me. You have sophistication in design and your drawings have great flow to them.

Good stuff.

Hi Jason, a flick through this sketch book is really inspiring. I love your storyboarding, lovely sense of direction and putting across emotions... may I ask how long it takes you to do say a sheet? I also really love the way you've handled the nudes, it's a really unique way of tackling them, and I like the outcome a lot.

Only suggesion would have been to maybe just have a touch more shadow on the underbelly of the ship by the statue of liberty, to give it a touch more depth (kinda like the shadows you see at the very bottom level of the buildings in the background). Other than that, pretty spot on, liking it a lot!

The whole feel is awesome. There is one thing that you could possibly have done to make it more believable in my eyes and that's to make the ceiling a lot more 'dirty' and wrecked. For some reason, the public toilets that i have seen, that seems to be one of the very first places where things start looking not very well taken care of at all. Yours looks squeaky clean.

Lovely sketchbook. You seem to combine organic stuff like human anatomy with technical drawings like environments very well. I actually recogninzed one of the faces you drew on the last page, I got that picture on my harddrive too, yay!:P

The last one though misses a bit of the sharpness and crispyness of the earlier environments I think. Probably because of getting used to different brushes or because you weren't planning on taking it further than just a speedpaint, but still. Spending some more time on it wouldn't hurt it I think.

Here are some sketches I did on a plane on the way home from the Game Developer's Conference. I have a really hard time drawing on planes. I can't focus because I'm afraid someone's looking at my drawing over my shoulder. It makes me extremely self conscious. Which doesn't make any sense because then I get home and post it on the internet for everyone to see. :) It was easily the most turbulent flight I've ever experienced. I was scared beyond reason.

I was looking at some sci-fi art at the conference so I was kind of inspired to try to kind of assimilate some of the elements of that art into my visual brain library.

Cupelli
March 2nd, 2008, 11:01 PM

Jason Borne
March 3rd, 2008, 12:49 PM
Yeah, I was trying to find a job. I made some really good contacts but no leads to speak of. I had a great conversation with Gary Cox, the art director for Petroglyph Studios and I think he helped me get a good strong sense of where I am as an artist, which I really appreciate.

The fact that I'm still in school could be hurting my chances of landing a position as well. Maybe when I graduate in July things will change.

Since the conference I've been inspired to do some more traditional sci-fi stuff. Here's another one. I've never tried something like this. It was fun.

I’m sorry to hear that, Jason. But July really isn’t that far away and maybe he’ll remember you and then you might have a better chance at a job there. A lot of your work is hard to forget and it keeps getting better. I mean, just look at your last one!

There is a SiFi convention coming up soon at the Denver Tech center. I know it sounds geeky but maybe you could put your art up and make a few connections there. ( don’t ask me how I know)

Man, it's been almost a year since I posted. ...a wild one at that. I graduated with a bachelor of science in game art and design from Westwood College in August last year and went straight to work as a concept artist at a company called Certain Affinity. You may know them from the downloadable blastacular map pack for Halo 2 and multiplayer maps for Call of Duty: World at War.

I've been working there for about 8 months now and have done more art work in that time than I've done, maybe, in my entire life previously. It turns out, however, that the game industry and Certain Affinity in particular is very secretive so I still can't really show any professional work but here are a few sketches. I'd like to be more active around here.

shyste, I always hear about the nondisclosure type deals where you cant show your work... but I did learn that in California theres some law (dont quote me, I learned this from the Dallas workshop straight from the mouth of jason manely...) that you always have the right to self promotion.... thereby allowing you the right to show your work as a portfolio.... i suppose the fine line lies in that you cant sell prints and the like....

anyway: YARGEN! i say to not being able to see what youve been busy with, nice heads though! :)
