I see all this daily work from so many here. I thought I knew dedication but then I came here and have seen displays which have proven to me what real dedication is. I cannot let myself be so lazy anymore. I am by no means happy with my progression and I won't settle till I truly understand how to interpret what I see.
I am making a promise to myself as many others on this board have done to produce at least one piece of art each day, wether it be a sketch, a portrait, a color study, anything.
Making this as a post will only help me to complete this task as annoying as I hate myself for it, peer-pressure does help me :D
I will also do one master copy or plaster cast drawing every 2 weeks. I have to start out slow with those cause it takes me a while.
I want Jason Manley, or whoever has the power to ban me from the boards if I don't do this. (of course I'll pm you though if I have to move or anything of the such post what I have missed in absence.)

Keep it up avetice. My advice at this point would be to spend a lot longer on your drawings. Really take care with the lines and the shading that you are putting down on your paper. I would suggest doing an all out pencil of that cast that you have. Take your time and make it look as realistic as possible...of course all the while you will be doing other sketches. Keep it up.

hmmmm well i tried using the hatching i studied from that anatomy for artists, but i guess it works so well that way is because of how nice it can show skin rather than plaster.... or maybe i should drawn the head bigger to leave more room to work with values.

it took me forever to get the side of the cliff when i had the picture at 1000 or so pixels, i thought i was staying away from detailing it at first, but realized i really didnt have the side of the cliff established well enough as a shape because i got caught up too much on one area of the cliff trying to get too many shapes when i didnt have all the large shapes completely established.I notice I tend to go to one extreme of the other, like with values i.e. very high constrast, or very low constrast. Same thing happens with a lot of things I do in terms of art, and I think thats what happened with the shapes. I know to work on big shapes before detailing, but i didn't go in a progressive fashion from large to small. I just went and put in the large shapes(flats) then jumped to the smaller shapes. So I shrunk the size of the image and it helped me get back to basic shapes.

June 17th, 2003, 09:50 PM
why don't you use deviantart.com Once you've uploaded your pics to them, look at your pic at 100% and right click to open it in another window. Copy this url and baam! a free host with no bandwidth limit. It's great!
Oh.....I almost forgot about your pics. One thing I suggest for a different approach to shading is to make shapes out of your shadow shapes. Don't get fooled by the transitions, but make those shadow shapes into, well shapes. i.e, if a shadow goes from like a 7 (on a scale of 1-10) to a 10, draw three different shapes. And incorporate those shadows with your line. One person who I love the way they manage their shadow shapes, and line is retro. Check out his sp's in the guest sp section. He does this ver well imo, and I think it might help you out a lot.

I know what you mean, man. It's hard to break old habits. It looks like your habit is to rush the shading, making it look more like cross hatching. My advice would be to take a lot more time and use a softer technique...try to really work in to each area and not leave any lines behind, only blending from one tone to the next.

It's pretty much you do it all on your own without any guidance. I've pretty much either drawn from those sessions, or from my head. It seems when i go from my head the pose if correct in proportion either is too stiff or to wild of a pose. They only have the drawing sessions on thursdays and saturdays.

hehe, ya, that would be one magic arm. Life drawings look good though, for the most part. I wonder, how long are these poses? If they were my drawings I'd say 10-15 min. Don't worry about that last one, though...looks like you spent most of the time on her face, which looks very good.
