Greetings all
Here are some other pieces I've done for those who wanted to see larger images of the stuff on my wildlife site. The non color ones are Pencil and the color one are done in oil with an acrylic under painting.

Hello Glenn, these are the most astonishing and tight pencil works, faultless even after all the zoom ins. You have a very beautiful hand, and I admire the patience and details that you've put into these drawings. I hope that in the future, you can use this craft that you have so skillfully mastered and create pieces that will challenge our imaginations. Thanks again for the detailed shots of the fuzzy and for sharing them.

Wow beautiful work, you are a REAL artist. I am especially in awe of your paintings and I don't think they look anything like photographs, they got a "painterly" quality you just don't get in photographs. Beautiful work. Have you done any work for nature books?

THANK YOU ALL! For your comments and compliments.
I just got back from a trip to the Rocky Mountains with a friend. I really need a shower and some sleep. I will post a message tomorrow with the dimensions of the images. And answer your questions.
Much appreciated

I may be in the minority here, but what I like most about your paintings are the landscapes. The color choices, light quality and atmospheric perspective really knock me out.

Hello
I saw your earlier picture with the dogs and I gotta say that they are amazing and so are these, I can´t believe it´s made with pencil. What kind of pencils do you use and what pencil do you start with during your drawing progress?
Keep up the good work

Here are the dimensions of the drawings and paintings. These may not be in the same order I posted them.
• Bighorn Sheep. Titled: Silent Watch 14 3/4 X 24 1/4 inches 37.5 X 62.2 cm
• Merlin on the fence post. Tiled: New Season Merlin 18 X 36 inches 46 X 92 cm
• Grizzly Titled: Mountain Domain 7 1/4 X 12 1/2 inches 18.5 X 32 cm
• Whitetail deer Titled: Out Of The Shadows 8 X 17 3/4 inches 20.3 X 45 cm
• Mule deer Titled: Autumn Gold 10 X 15 inches 25.8 X 38 cm
Answers to some of your questions:
I use reference almost all the time. I will on occasion do the sky with out reference.
I try to use pictures I have taken myself. I never use just one picture and copy it. There is no merit in that. I might as well just keep the picture.
These pictures are made up of different pictures put together to make one. For example the grizzly is made up of a lot of pictures. This is how the drawing can be broken down into the different picture references.
• The grass and flowers
• The boulders on the ground
• The dead tree
• The grizzly ( Which I got from the basement of the porvincial museum ) stuffed.
• The rocks and trees behind and to the right of the grizzly
• The cliff on the left.
• The background mountains
• I made the clouds for this drawing out of my head
The other images don't have as many indivdual pieces. But they are all composites.
I should point out here that I do not intend to do these drawings detailed. I try to make them look realistic. And considering that these drawings have already been scanned and compressed, some of that realism is now gone. To me detail doesn't mean much. To painstakingly paint 30,000 hairs on a animal and have it look like a target on a rifle range isn't a huge success. I enjoy rendering the textures, lighting, and creating a visually pleasing compostion. In that I find my peace.
The Sheep dawing is mostly HB pencil. I can use this pencil because the drawing is big enough to use that soft of a lead and still maintain the realism. And lighter areas are 2H
The grizzly is smaller. I used HB for the very dark areas. H, and 2H.
THE PENCIL PROCESS I USE TO GET STARTED:
OK, for me the most important thing is to astablish as quickly as possible the darkest dark I am going to use in the drawing. The reason for this is that the brightest I can go is the white of the paper. If I don't go dark enough I will never be able to get the brightness I need. Once I have established the darkest dark I will then look for a midtone followed by something that is very light, but not the pure white paper.
For example:
The sheep on the rocks:
I started in the very bottom left corner. With a very light line drawing already in place. For these drawings I will use a grid on top of the source image to try and maintain some accuracy in making the initial line drawing, but I don't spend a lot of time doing this. By starting in the bottom left corner I have the dark area under the big boulder to get my darkest dark established. The bottom of the big boulder has a nice mid tone to it, and so does the small vertical rock.
Then for the highlight I do the little spray of grass in the corner and the rock behind it. From there I work my way up, drawing in all the grass and rocks on the ground up to the big rock laying on the ground. I did some of the dark vertical face of this rock to get some more tones to use as a reference for the rest of the drawing. Once I have that much done I started on that big boulder on the left and worked my way to the top of the drawing. Went across doing all the trees, then down to the bottom right corner. I work in this pattern on large drawings so I don't put my hand on the areas already drawn. Also I will usually draw about 2 sq inches then spray that area with a workable fixative to help protect it from smudging. The only erasing I do is to adjust tones. Very seldom if ever do I totally remove something already drawn.
So thats if for now. I hope this helps.

Wow thank you Glenn, that answers my question. :)
Once Again, thank you.
Edit - This is so amazing, I saved your pictures and also the above post as a teacher reference cause this is so good (I hope it is ok), you should write a book, or maybe you have already?
have a nice day

You are a master!
I love your drawings and paintings. I love nature and wildlife, and seeing your pictures I can feel a little more free (although I am trapped in a small room at work).
My favorite one is autumn gold, a beautiful image.
