Corodroid

this one I started as a loose marker ink and brush sketch looking into a mirror across the room, then I scaned it and added detail in painter 7. the foundation of an analog medium really helped me follow this through, and with the digital control I was able to render it to my satisfaction without boundaries.

wow - this portrait ist absolutely great. I love the contrast and colors. The colors are so thick and strong, gives me the impression of sunlight hitting your face. Definitely one of my favorite portraits you've done.

i fear for your validation:

(did you know he was the first artist to do a self-portrait?)

I just wanted to let you know that seeing this kind of work has inspired me to paint. Seeing work like yours and Jon Foster's makes me so motivated...yesterday I ordered a wacom intuos 2 tablet and I am going to get painter 7. I am going to be taking art classes at University of Pennsylvania ( I work there so I get to go for free hehe). I don't know how I will do but I can only hope I could do stuff like this someday...awesome work man.

wow Andrew, I really like this one. dramatic lighting has always intrigued me. You compel me to produce more self portriats,
the only problem is I can't stand my face! Guess I'll just have to get creative...thx. :)

kick ass, dude. i really love the color palette and brushwork. yah. i checked again. brushwork is fantastic.

and did you "3d" the blobs and make them look like your eye? cuz that's a nice touch, too.

First I want to say that I've done 5 self portraits in the last 3 days because of this thread. Thanks for the motivation, Android.

This one totally kicks ass. It's far and away my favorite of your impressive self portraits.

I have a question. The highlight in the eye seems out of place to me because while the rest of the portrait is rendered in broad, hard-edged strokes, the highlight is soft-edged and too perfectly rounded. Is there a reason you did it like that?Seems to me you might want to make it a brush stroke like the rest of the portrait, or maybe leave it out entirely, but maybe I'm missing something.

I've always had trouble drawing lifelike eyes. I'd love to hear any advice you have on the subject.

But that's just picking nits. I love this portrait. It's totally awesome. I'll be doing some more self portraits tonight...

Edit: I took another long look, and I have another question. What's with the little blue marks off to the left? (On the trail of the largest floating blob/metroid.) Is that some Jedi color theory trick that makes the piece seem even oranger?

Thanks for posting, and for any advice.

This piece and a couple others really remind me of Yoji Shinkawa (or perhaps his work reminds me of this, I shouldn't say) - anyway, I really love it - it's amazing how precise and clear and dimensional the final product is, despite the roughness and "apparent" sloppiness of the lines (as opposed to more traditional illustrative approaches). I totally love it.

I think the light blue is used to desaturate the orange - if you look, it's used in all those little blobs for the ring of lighter, gray-orange in the middle....
