[ This'll be pretty damn poofy. ]

[ It might be so poofy that she is otherwise nearly obscured... ]

[ ... Maybe just a little face peering out of the skirt? ]

[ Maybe not... ]

[ But, make it poofy. ]

[ And make her pretty. ]

demdike, awesome! One suggestion though... with her long torso, she should probably have a longer face. Still though, I really like how you can see the shape of her body well through the fluffies.

Here's mine; A little boring, but it was a pleasant sketch session: [EDIT] with new image, poofier

I seriously need ALOT of practice in painting. ;)

Winstar, looks great to me! Really, the linework and blending is looking good. Now, just add more colors and more emboldened edges. The dress is looking quite good now.

Johnnyhorse: Thank ya, I'll just have to see what I can do with this, the transition from my Usual toon stuff drawings to something like this is proving to be quite a challenge for me. But as they say Practice Practice Practice! While it doesn't really make you perfect, it does make you better at it.

I'm struggling with creating directly on the tablet, and using color in general. Usually I would sketch on paper, scan, and then color with the tablet. I'm considering getting a cintiq.

I'm glad I got it somewhat right Johnnystar, when I first followed your link
I felt pretty puzzled.
Anyway, I'll maybe add another one...smaller this time, I'm at 1280x1024 and can't view full,
(bangs head repeatedly)must post smaller pics!!!
By the way, I think you're right about the face.

critiques:

Johnnystar - her dress is pretty poofy, but still a bit flat, probably a more detemined lighting would help
Winstar - that's lovely, can't wait to see it finished, I already like it a lot.
Lady Hydralisk - that's some gloomy magnificence on her dress:)
Knight Vision - I think somewhere on the whole pic, one should be able
to see the dresses boundaries, otherwise it's hard to tell wether she's
wearing it or has just fallen in it.
burrito - very cool, I really like your style, great lineart and great coloring

I'm thinking so far pretty-wise Winstar wins, mega-poofy-wise it's a tie between JohnnyHorse and Crustacean, and dress-wise LadyHydralisk wins.

But that's just my opinion  .

I know it's a little early for Halloween, but as soon as I read 'poofy dress' I just thaught of pumpkins... I love the colour orange aswell.

http://bluntedtaffer.50megs.com/speedpainting/DSG1122.jpg

demdike: Real warm/cuddly looking. Great face, but her body is a little long - or was this intentional?

Johnnyhorse: Great, simple and cloud-like. Love the way you've done the hand, but judging by her face she looks a little pissed off.

Winstar: Nice strokes on the skirt, but maybe it could do with a little more contrast to make it pop out a bit?

LadyHydralisk: Her arm looks a little disjointed, but I like all the hair/feathers? The hand warmers are a great idea and add to the 'poofy-ness'.

Knight Vision: I like how she seems to be floating in a sea of skirt. Good idea.

burrito: Love the thumbless gloves and skirt pattern. Maybe you could play with the background a little to help with depth.

Crustacean: Haha... I'd pay to see her trying to strutt on some ballroom floor. Uber poofy!

Mehz: I like the twirls of cloth. It would look better if you had used the same simple flowing strokes on her dress as you have on her face.

Miljenko, Hot. Also, quite funny. My only crit is that her hair probably shouldn't be flying all over the place. I love the legs' outlines
Hamsta, hillarious. She looks about as pissed off/disgusted as the woman in my pic. Overall the pose and everything is great, but that little circle around her torso is bothering me!
Wishes, good start... I think it would benefit a lot if you put some value into it... it's a pretty funny pose.
Horsefly, great values, and wonderful colors. Thanks for the crits.
Mehz, nicely done, though I think we need more 'poof', also, the hand by her face is a little obscured. Other than that, great sketch and that face is wonderful.
Crustacean, oh come on, we know you can do better than that (I only say this cause you are incredibly good!), the neck is a little baffling, and the background could use more help. I'm assuming you just didn't dedicate enough time to it ;) Dress is nice and poofy, however
Burrito and Knight Vision, no crits at all... excellent, both of em. [EDIT] oh, and burrito, fix that thumb on the left, then it'll be perfect!
LadyHydralisk, the most interesting picture in a good way. Two things that kind of throw me off though; the skin color and what looks to be antennae--intentional? Your second sketch is great.

Hahaha... where else? DeviantArt. Oh, and maybe it was mentioned on Somethingawful, where i used to frequent. Don't worry, I'm not an advocate of it... I just can't miss an opportunity to bring it up.

Crustacean - incredibly puffy, not sure if watercolor should have been weapon of choice.
Mehz - plain lovely, very nice face.
Horsefly - good idea, really like the tones and colors. Her left eye seems to be off position.
Wishes - cute idea, but it's too close to a doodle.
Hamsta - Just special. I like it, the idea is pretty cool.
miljenko - nice sketch, but it looks dull...
gep - very nice and funny, good cartoon style.
CarlosNCT - WOW! Welcome aboard, we'll love you, your pic is great.
armando - nice idea, perspective seems a little off.

Johnnyhorse: thanks for your comments. I had a tough time with this one and balls'd out at the end.

Demdike: I appreciate your feedback. Still think yours is the cuddliest dress on the block. Nice one!

armando: Man, you got me bagged on the flying thing: I wanted to get that impression but I ended up making a mess and decided to crop the pic' becouse I ran out of time. I wanted to capture that energy you have with the arms flung out behind the character. Prop's to you for finding a viable solution. You don't seem to have a problem with simple rendering of hands that work.

CarlosNCT: Hi there. Really like your style. I'm kinda new at this DSG thing myself, but I never thaught of it as a contest and I hope that's not what you mean't. Like you I was watching this place for a while before I decided to jump in, and the reason why I decided to take that jump was becouse this isn't a contest: It's more about challenging yourself and learning from each other. Hope you stick around. Looks like you have some real nice work to show. :^^:

armando
September 20th, 2006, 12:17 AM
Johnnyhorse: Yeah the concept didn't totally come across. Basically as I was drawing a sexual connotation was developing, so I let it: a white flame going up her skirt, a white mob of men pointing up erect.
demdike: I really wanted to show that flame, although it doesn't read. It was a confusing angle for me, no doubt, just gotta practice more.

Figure I'll give my takes on other's posts. Won't really crit as these are sketches, but I might.
demdike: Not a dress, but it works. Definitely poofy and makes a fashion statement. The recessed face sells it well. My only crit is that the contrast between the sweater and the slimness of her body could be emphasized more.
Johnnyhorse: I think marshmellow when I see it, effective. Would be interesting to pursue that marshmellow concept further. I might steal that idea actually for some practice, don't worry I'll give you credit if I do.
Winstar: She's cute. More of the dress should be shown though. Yeah, it sucks being a beginner: have to wrestle with the concept and it's execution at the same time.
LadyHydralisk: Looks like a pretty cool concept, kind of like a peacock, which would be a cool gimmick if it were animated. It's difficult to make out the hat though, looks like she has antenae.
Knight Vision: First impression is that she's sinking into something, which works for the concept but it's unclear that it's a dress. Good job with her expression.
burrito: Like the color scheme, interesting color on her eyes. Looks like she's growing out of the dress, like a plant, which is an interesting visual.
crustacean: Defintely poofy, fits the topic well. Striking.
Mehz: She's sultry, nice pose with the flower. The petal aspects of the dress could be clarified more.
Horsefly: I liked yours the most. I could see a chick wearing that on Halloween, I can imagine a story behind it, nice.
Wishes: Well, it is a big dress. I don't want to sound like a jerk, since I want to keep this fun, but you could have put a little more effort into it.
hamsta: Nice take on the topic, very clever. Would have been funny to have put her in just a big ass see through bubble too.
miljenko: Good sketch. I like that she's taking off her underwear. Concept wise, it looks like a regular dress like a cancan dancer(or whatever they're called) would wear. She's hot though.
gep: Eye catching color scheme. Nice contrast with the tiny skirt then the poofy elements.
CarlosNCT: Nice painting. Similar to Miljenko in that it's mostly a regular skirt, but it is billowy.

Damn that took a long time, that's the last time I ever do that.

Carlos,

I think your painted work looks good- I like the blue scheme and the way you have the light accent the details on parts in shadow. I also like the pose- has nice movement.

Here's my contribution to the poofy gown olympics-

Thanks to all who gave me crit. I decided to make an effort and crit all ya effers!

Demdike: While her "poofy" sweaterlooks well rendered, the face needs some attention. Even if its manga style it looks plastic. Same goes for belly and hand. Proportions issues are there as well as her torso seems to be kind of stretched.

Johnnyhorse: While the design of the dress and the pose works well, there is a perspective issue about her head: it looks like she has a wig that hovers few inches above the head.

Winstar: um, well, works fine as is, the question is does it need more clarity...dunno

Lady Hidralisk: your pencil sketch is superior to the finished piece, wish the scan of it was better

KnightVision: If intended in a cartoonish manner, it is fine, though you might reconsider those lines, dude.

Burrito: most complete piece here. Coherence of the concept, the style, gesture, composition, line and color.

Crustacean: get the ef out, dude!:)))

Mehz: I could almost hear her say "mmmmm those daisies are profoundly opulent, reminiscent of that faithful picnic in Hillsburry last spring...bla bla bla", she looks like a freaking aristo-girl from 1940s British cinema. Effective sketch though.

Horsefly: Face needs attention, while colors and values look very good.

Wishes: a bit overdressed, wouldn't you aggree?? :)))

Hamsta: Princess Leia aged 13???:)))

miljenko (yes, to self): Crap crap crap, work work work

gep: its fine for what it is, I would just rework her skirt abit.

Carlos NCT: colors, values, light and shadow are the real strongpoints of this sketch

Armando: a bit hot down there, isn't it? :))

Blackarrow: lines on faces too strong, while absent on certain places on limbs, the dress, etc. Composition and gestures are good though

LateniteHipe: While her pose and the overall composition look good, I think you need to reconsider her backand make it more feminine like.

Illustrange Spaniards? where did you get that from?
Something isn't right about your girl, her arms are rather manly, she has no ribcage, and her face is very creepy being so high, but that I can see as a style choice.
Some interesting textures, but the colors aren't my cup of tea, looking plasticy, and very digital.

miljenko I'm not laughing. (that sounds cruel doesn't it?) It's not bad. Nice interaction between the warms and the cools.
A bit static though, maybe doing something with the bg would have been nice.

armando Small, and I missed her being a hot air balloon at first, which is a shame. Lot's of character and fun in this. The girl and the balloon aren't on the same perspective, but "cheating" the way you did might not be such a bad solution. I don't like the clouds, or what ever that is, I think it would have had more volume and movement.

reading Johnnyhorse's crit, and what follows, I know see those are people

demdike Haha, cute :^^: although not technically a dress ;)
She is rather long, isn't she? and something about the head area seems flat, fault of the view, I think.

Johnnyhorse Great one, really, love the "dirty" line art, and the work with the grey mass, brings the warm skin tones into focus.
I don't like the light blue on her face, whatever that is, I think her mouth and nose are a bit off to our left, and I would like to know what's going on with her left hand.

demdike: Cool, modern style, very tactile texture and great midriff! ;)
Johnyhorse: I think the gray background makes it look a little flat, the whole should have more contrast and perhaps more surface information on the dress.
Winstar: Good choice of colour, but lacks contrast, too. Definetly a cutey face!!!
LadyHydralisk: Antennae? lol! beautiful color, but the sketch looks more detailed and proportionate.
KnightVision: Very poofy! Very pretty! Cintiq, drool... but being able to work on a regular tablet will land you a job more easily!
burrito: Very pretty, great colour scheme and line art! Coquette pose as well!
Crustacean: Nice, very poofy, but could use more defined detail on the dress.
Mehz: Beautiful, delirious dress! Cute, too!
Horsefly: I like the earthy, autumnal colour palette!
Wishes: Lol!!!
Hamsta: Original take on this one! It's like... a commuter's personal airbag! It really looks like transparent plastic!
Miljenko: Ooh, naughty! She looks pretty hot, too!
Gep: Cute, modern, interesting cartoonish style!
CarlosNCP: Very nice, great colour, texture and dynamic composition.
Armando: Original idea, but a rather small pic!
Blackarrow222: I like the first one better, the second is rather confusing. Good anatomy!
LateNiteHype: Cool cartoonish style, but could use more contrast in places because it looks a little flat
Illustrange: Very "illustration-ish", cool texture. Ribcage relief is a little too much, but the girl is sexy!
Mitze: Great Neue Sachlichkeit/Burlesque vibe! She looks deranged!!!
DrFx: You didn't do neither the hands nor the bling because you're one lazy bastard! Also, cleavage needs contouring!
