What can I do to add realism to the rocks and such, at least to make it look better? I know its in almost thumbnail stages, but I'd like some composition, color, and any other critiques you can give. Thank you!

Throw down some abstract shapes, then pick and choose which to render, use texture overlays, and get some photo ref. When in doubt, photo ref is awesome. Look at other artists use of color. Bumskee's got a piece in the finally finished section that has similar lighting ideas.

The composition is okay, but if you took those same colors and tried them out in about a dozen quick sketches, I bet you could come up with a much stronger composition.

Blue Severin, what do you mean by choose which abstract shape to render? Yeah I was kinda using bumskee's color scheme, didnt really mean to make it look so similar to his peice, I've been stewing over this scene for a couple weeks now.
I'll probably end up changing the comp., just to make it look much less like bumskee's. Sorry man haha. Not like you'll see this anyway.
Thanks for the comments

i think you should fight this one allot! more.. it seems to me you didnt do much here at all.. when your a junior at this stuff.. dont get frustrated if it takes you weeks to get a picture like this to look right.. im sure you are not happy with this one at all.. i see what your trying.. but i also see you are not trying nearly hard enough.. do that.. force this thing to become awesome.. dont wait for it to happen(fix itsself) make it work!.

Last update before I'm done for the night. I'll work on it more tommorow. Thanks for your critique.

ok, the best way to explain the rendering from abstract shapes is to show it in action. Here's a tutorial by Sparth that deals a lot with what I'm talking about. It helps keep your colors strong, and your work from being stale and contrived. The new update is cool, but the sky seems a bit oversaturated, and that hill they're walking up either has the perspective off or is way too steep.
