I would've never guessed these were done digitally. The values are so meaty and feel so tactile. Great stuff.

easily best of.. the one on the upper right is especially nice

WOW. At first I was like, "mmm, nice" followed almost immediatley by "I wonder if he sticks to subdued poses cuz he's afraid of crazy poses", Then I scrolled down a tad...WOW. You hit all my buttons dude. Love the green guy.

Wow dood, that shit looks amazing. I really love the way you render. It definitely reminds me of the good ol days of old fashioned fantasy art. Keep goin man!

Like others said, it feels alot different from most PS painted pieces.

Really well done.

I especially love the pose of the purple creature. :)

Ahh, they have that old school feel to them that makes me all warm inside. Lovely. The lighting... simple amazing. I wish someone could explain what exactly makes these values feel that nice (kinda what Phil Hale makes me feel).
Top notch, please post some more of these cuties.

I have to join the fanboy awe wagon, I have never seen digital work look like this.

Please grace us with a tut and maybe some brushes?

I love this style of painting and rendering in photoshop: very oily and gritty. Please tell me which brush did you use. Especially for the backgrounds in all the pics.

Terrific stuff, the finish you have achieved reminds me of Brom (natch) & one of my favorite paperback cover artists from waaaaaay back, Gino D'Achille. The texture on the green guy's skin is superb.

Wow, I really love the way you paint metallic textures, the brush work and choice of colours works really well.

These are great. They look like oil paint. Especially the skin tone in the last monster guy. I agree I'd like to know how you work on these, brushes would be cool too.

Nice stuff. I love the texture on the bottom guy's weapon.

Hishnak
September 15th, 2006, 07:20 AM
Great, This is just nice. The only thing I have to say is that the left foot on the purple character looks a little strange. The way you can see the bottom of the foot makes it looks rounded, like he would have trouble walking...get what I'm saying?

September 15th, 2006, 07:58 AM
Bloody brilliant Anders. I can't believe how far you have come since the first stuff you showed back then on the sijun forums.

top notch!

These are just great. I have to agree with some of the others on this, I would have never thought this was digital. Certain elements of these reminds me of Richard Corben's work. I hope you post a tutorial!

Amazing! I reeeally love the third one's position. Gorgeous poses and painting!

September 15th, 2006, 04:13 PM
much enjoyed - great low sat studies. the only thing that took me a bit was the right foot of the drawf behind his weapon - the lighting on the blade made me think he was walking and the foot was all odd. duh me. ;)
gesture of the third is sweet as well!
cheers,

September 16th, 2006, 09:58 AM
awesome man. if you want crits the only thing I found was the dwarf's left hand, its rather flat and perhaps a few more details and colors would do it good. overall its stunning, I love the rendering style too- maybe it's just me but I get renaissance vibes and it also really feels like an oil painting. again, awesome.

I'm not qualified to crit work of this level, so I'll just say what the others said: Fantastic work. They look like sculptures, nothing like digital stuff. Amazing colors and lighting.

Really great, and a very different feel from most photoshop work.
I would go as far as to say this feels nothing like photoshop. If i had not read it was, i would have assumed it was watercolors.

I think you are talking about Tim & Greg Hilderbrant, who also desgned one of the iconic Star Wars posters back in '77. But other than the subject matter of the dwarf image, I can't say I see any resemblance.

Thanks for your replies :) Some of the brushes used for the background are part of Joachim Barrums brush collection (http://www.joachimart.com/ (http://www.joachimart.com/%29)), the rest are standard psd chalk brushes

beautiful rendering, nice illustrative technique. Love the green guy.
Interesting to see the process.

Mr.Blonde
September 20th, 2006, 01:05 AM
Hey! beautifully rendered indeed. You asked for crits...

My only crit would be that I would like to see more dynamic poses with more extreme foreshortening.. Also more expression on the faces and body language of your figures. It is a lot to think about, but it seems to me that you have a very solid rendering technique, and with the above elements, your work would be taken to the next level. For great examples of gestures and foreshortening and characterization all in one, take a look at marko/wes etc. they have it down. Add that to your "meaty" digital technique and it's pure love. please post more! thanks for the steps!

Any chance of explaining this tutorial? And give steps of other two?
Meaning, everything. The whole thing.

I must absorb your powers. Now.

Thanks, mate.

how did you go from step 3 to step 4? did you redraw the linework or did you sort of trace over what was there before?

also what kind of layer settings and painting techniques did you use to punch up the values from step 5 to step 6?

I'm really loving that purple guy. Purple skin is so hard to do without making it look cheesy, but wow, that's great! I love how you designed the feet too.

Well...How in the hell did I miss these???

Very cool rendering style, I love the old school feel of the works!
It's great to see digital pieces that use the medium so successfully they feel traditional.

Good work!

I like these a lot... no, I like them more than that! But I don't think they look like oil at all. They look like old handcoloured b&w photos, which gives them a very unique mode in this context. Great work!
