rendering is cool, poses are a bit stiff overall. I think it's also a good idea to give your characters a cast shadow on the ground. Gives them a feeling of being grounded.
but cool work, keep posting

Great works you have here. Your chracters are pretty solid. They have a good sense of expression. I like the gunfighty scene. It has a nice dynamic composition. You should polish it up and finish it.

SantaClaus
September 28th, 2006, 09:08 AM
MrBobMarley's- At home I have Photoshop 7.0... At work I have CS... so I use both. To blend I just block in the colors first and make sure it visually blends. then I take a the soft airbrush and paint the in betweens. does that make sence?
heres kinda of a third biker girl... looks more like shes in the band though.

September 28th, 2006, 10:30 AM
cool sketchthread. i love the costume designs you've got going on. it seems like you're shying away from feet. whatever the reason may be, i think you oughtta start working them up to the same level as the rest of the costume
SantaClaus
September 28th, 2006, 05:55 PM
character-thanks. yea good point. the next time I sketch feet I will remember to render them more. I think the reason I dont detail them often is because they tend to be last on my hierarchy of importance... which can be kinda bad.

I agree, colors are great and the looseness of the drawing and painting are admirable, but the poses could be a little more dynamic. Get a line of action through the bodies working for you and let the limbs relax more.

I think this sketchbook is remarkable - these drawings have a solid, three dimensional "meaty" quality...there is a good sense of the 3D of it all. I tend to like the painterly effect that some have - with a little less finish work, but all of them are very well done.
Do you tend to start at the head and work your way down? It seems so, as some of the feet/shoes/boots are very quickly painted in, with less of a finished quality as some of the faces. The same for some of the hands, but the feet stand out (haha, so to speak) as having the least amount of time spent.
I can understand this, as whenever I do a costume rendering, I tend to start at the head and hands, and then paint from the shoulders down. The feet and shoes always seem to be the last. I don't mind as much - when I first started out, I would paint in the clothing and hit the face last, but it always seemed like an uphill battle - the sketch would never "come to life" while the flesh tones and facial features were unattended.
All in all, I like your work - look forward to seeing more!

madhatter-Thanks. your too nice. Yea I almost always start with the head. I don't think thats a wrong or right thing to do... feet tend to be my last priority when making a character... its not a good thing they look less developed than the rest though... I am workin on that. : )

his arms and legs are too short, and the perspective on our left is screwed up

Getting back to the art.

Hey man - thanx for commenting in book so often and muchsorry for not dropping by here as often as I should! Don't sweat about the pose-crit - it's a valid crit, and noone has the right to resent an honest crit!
These last ones are looking sweet man - really digging those designs. Not sure, you might want to pour some more thought into the background - many are looking really cool but some just need that little something to make it totally killer! Other than that just keep doing what you're doing man! have 5 stars for dedication man.

You seem so comfortable with the wacom, like I am with my prismacolors. I have a ways to go with ps yet. I like the range of colors in your pallette. Hope I'm not beating a dead horse, but some of the figures area bit on on the stiff side and somewhat short as far as normal proportions go. Maybe it's the size of their feet that creates the effect. Either way, not knocking your style, just offering some observations. And thanks for the tips in my sb.

Post 81 is the strongest of the last bunch. Would like to see the paper studies when you can get them up. You might want to try experimenting with different angles and such, you know shake it up a bit. Do you ref your designs or is it from imagination? I can't think of shit for oufits when I draw figures.

Marley- thanks for letting me know... I actually thought that image was kinda weak but I'm glad to see someone liked it. Yea I will get some pencil anatomy studies up hopefully by next week. Last two are great, don't too much to crit on the characters themselves. Think you should starting putting your character in some more dynamic situations rather than just standing round. This will also force you to work with more dynamic compositions and lighting. Try playing around with your concepts some, take them all the way!

I like your works, they're very loose and seem to have a lot of motion in them. You're right about your figures looking a bit stiff at times, but I think figure studies/life drawing should solve that problem.
I think in pictures where your character is in a scene, it doesn't feel like it's part of the scene. This is because the character is almost always more detailed than everything else and has a different sort of lighting on him/her.

Kaoru- thanks your crits will help! I realized how the background doesnt always fit. I have to work on this also. The ones I have done arent really to tell a story. but more to tell something about the character.
spyder.x.venom-you double posted that painting you got there... also I think it might be a good idea to get a sketchbook of your own to post in. I'd be happy to visit. The image coloring looks ok to me. I think your biggest problems might be with the character and the perspective. something odd about his shoulders...

I used it once to smooth out metal to make it look more clean and brushed metal.

Happy holidays Santa :). Thanks for pointing out the knee thing for me, It's funny how something so obvious can just elude you like that.
Not a lot I can crit you here. I think the type of studies you're doing are all going down the right track and your colors are good. I'd suggest you to go for more variety in your facial expressions and to try out some more dramatic poses. I feel you can definitely afford more liveliness in your characters.
Just my two cents, hope that's relevant to ya.

I like the loose strokes and brushy feel. You seem to have a mood to the palette you pick...
A crit I can offer for your pic with the girl in the hat; her dress looks really pretty, good work there! But what do you think about making her neck slightly smaller? If you want her to look more delicate, you can move her lips to our left a little, this will make her jaw seem less prominent. Lovely details on the dress and staff light, and you took care to keep the blue light radiosity :)

hey very nice characters here, nice colors, nice concepts...only thing is they look a bit stiff imho. You should use what you learn with figure drawing (post 124 kicks ass) on your charcters. You could also try and pic some nice reference pics with cool poses and nice angles and then just work on your character usign the "skeleton" of the figure in the ref pic...christmas card looks very good ;)

Hey no problem. Your colors are looking cool as always. I guess the 'improvement' is more related to my comment awhile back about allowing the poses to relax. The female figure in post #153 especially her pose looks more relaxed than say the lady in post #137. The porportions I mentioned were referring to the life drawings. I'm liking those a lot.
Keep it up.

Hi, you have an awesome SB here. I like the volume to the important parts in the last piece, looks very realistic so I think you achieved what you were going for. The girl in #183 looks great but the head and shoulders are too small/narrow for the rest of her frame.

January 9th, 2007, 06:09 AM
hey man thanks for the comments in my SB! thanks a lot in fact!
i REALLY admire the fact that you are using optical blending.... i think that takes a certain amount confidence and it looks fucking cool. that being said its nice to see stuff like this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=74242&stc=1&d=1168295210) too.
i think the two things that would benefit your work would be more attention to backgrounds (they don't have to be environments, just something a little more, you have a few backgrounds that work great) but the main thing i think is you should try push your poses further, i like all your poses, i just think they would be a lot stronger if they were more extreme in some cases...
here are some of my fav's
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=29305&stc=1&d=1159483893, can't beat the ,man :P (a good example of a cool pose that could be a lot cooler if it was more extreme i think.
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=31784&stc=1&d=1160006790, another that has a cool pose but could be cooler, hes very rigid here.
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=35581&stc=1&d=1160779827, i love this concept, just chillin in an old school scuba suit, really like the texture of the fabric, and the colour pallet looks wet? if you know what i mean :D
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=37120&stc=1&d=1161130108, i'm a sucker for clowns with creepy grins :P
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=52721&stc=1&d=1164155297, VERY cool colours, and great strokes, although i think you lost it a little on the face, i understand you wanted to draw focus to the face, but i think it would have been cool to keep it graphic, there is more than enough to look at already on the body.
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=57965&stc=1&d=1165181949, i just like this. really nice, good example of how some of you poses work great when they are subtle.
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=73015&stc=1&d=1168111054 another that i just like, and another example that shows a little more attention to the background can enhance the piece a lot.
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=73692&stc=1&d=1168213225, sexy long legs  , the facial expression is a little blank though:(

Hey Santa, too long since I've been here lol.
You're becoming more confident with colour each time, good to see. Try putting some more time into your enviros, and maybe do some creatures with really twisted anatomy. Wow, i love your latest girls.
Really great stuff man, good compositions an poses there. And i love how you do those thick strokes; backgrounds coming along nicely, not much to crit here.
Sorry for asspatting, but i don't find much.

Hey Santa! Thanks for stopping by my book!
You've really improved tons man, these last three are great.
My only crits would be to study lighting a bit more - it feels just a tad off in terms of colour sometimes. make sure you don't just paste white down.
And in the princess curtains one, the pose is feeling awkwardly stiff.
This is rare in your work so it's not a big issue, just a nitpicky observation.
Good to see you spending time on bg's! They look awesome!
Keep churning out the love bro!
ciao!

Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook. You made a great deal of progress in your drawing. What strikes me most is that your sence for atmosphere has increased so much. Keep this SB alive for it is very inspiring !!!

Hey Santa !
Very nice updates bro. The stories are nice. It'd be great to see that last one finished =)... it reminds me a bit of Dan Milligan's stuff.
Though the faces seems a bit too simple from time to time, but i guess it's because they ask alot of time to be done.
Keep it up, and thanks alot for the support in my sb !

Santa!
Thanks for your helpful comments in my sb.
Last updates are nice, lighting in the sea picture is good.
For that last one, background and colors are well done, really gives the impression of an epic battle there. The two characters holding swords could be better though concerning posture and perspective. The left one especially looks really stiff and is holding his sword strange.
If you lean your head a little bit you will also see that the helmets are strange. They don't seem to go round the head, like the side behind is bigger than front one. You should work on the pic, it has lot of potential. Good to see some action here :) , if you improve on your figures you will get even better.

Sonaj-no problem, hopefully it will help. thanks for the advice and compliments. you can see I tried to fix what was wrong with that work a bit.
I tried to make some adjustments over lunch to the last piece. and I did another quick one.
