Here is a new one without the texture in the upper background. Thanks for the crits! And I thought it was finished. . . Hope you like the changes!

Impressive lighting. What medium is this ?

Thanks! I love playing with light, probably due to the Seattle gray days. Used Photoshop CS for siren, and a bit of Painter for the background.

nice color -

I think it would help a lot if you made the facets of the right wing - the feathers I guess - different in size. One way of doing this is overalpping each one and getting smaller as it moves furhter away from the viewer. They're all the same size (along with those little things coming off them) and lined perfectly..which flattens the whole wing

Overall, exxagerating the curve of the wing with a more sharp edge where it ends would be make for a more interesting shape.

by golly you're right! I tend to flatten everything. Good to have a fresh pair of eyes.

The thread title caught my eye, being an ancient COW issue (Sirens, #4 was it?). I remember this entry, good times :) Looks really good. Colors are popping, head is engaging. On the technical side, I agree with Rascar Capac with regards to the feathers. Some of the fine, individual strands, could use some more mass underneath, just to give more volume ...Hey I sound like a shampoo commercial.

Overall I like where you took it though. Hope to see more of you in the forums, Oomgawa, and welcome back.

Hey Lukavi! Thanks for the welcome back. Spending all my time learning Painter IX.

My crits usually say nice color, but something is wrong with the. . .

I'll see what I can do with the feathers, in the meantime, draw me something incredible that I can color!

Beautiful palette and lighting, I really dig this piece. What isn't quite working for me is the swivel of the neck and perspective of the head, it's not that convincing for me. I realize it's tough to show the correct structure when it's covered with feathers, but I think tightening up the plummage around the next and head (as it's kind of blurry, especially in the upper back) and suggesting a spinal cord somehow might help.

Cool piece.

That much i know VERY well. =/ BUT at least the gray seattle days gives me my best ideas. Lovet his peice. Very rich in color and design.

strych9ine: Thanks! I worked on it and tried to make the head and neck work better.

Eveningkiss: At least the rainy weather gives us more time indoors to work! Thanks!

Rascar Capac: I went back to my turkey vulture reference and made some changes to the wings. Thanks for the advice!

pretty, but I think the new version might actually be too busy on the wings now. The first one is easier on my eyes.

i think that the colours of the bird are great... but you need to elaborate on the girls body is seems kind of cartoon flat

ColdKodiak: hmmm. . .I'm confused. the one on the top is the new one and the wings are toned down a bit. Which one are you looking at?

miscif: I'll take a look at it. Thanks.

Funny how you think something is finished until you show it to someone.
Should have posted in the crit center first.

the saturation is a good improvement (feels warmer now), but i'm not big on the grainy texture - it has those dark spots, ya know? could you post a version without that grainy texture?
cheers!

hey dave! I found an older version without the texture in the upper background, but the stuff on the bottom is there to stay. Had already merged those layers. Bettter?
