IDM 01: Think Tank
Winner: Jeremy

This tank uses monkey brainpower. I don't have a good explanation why except to say that I think in the future there will be a lot of things discovered which we never could have predicted, so as it may seem illogical now, it may be perfectly reasonable someday for reasons I couldn't begin to comprehend. Also, I think a monkey brain makes for a more interesting concept. I figured that a brain would be better off if it remained inside the skull because it's probably always going to be easier to just implant things into it than to remove it from the nervous system. I had reservations about having the primate exposed in a transparent cylinder instead of inside the tank, be again I thought it was more interesting and I figured that in the future they'll have developed a transparent material which is as strong as any tank armor today.

Sadly, no image available

The concept barely comes across, I may finish it up later if I get a chance... An interstellar gaggle of manufacturing stations drift in seemingly random orbits about our solar-system. Fixed with large 'magnifying-lens' cells, they're able to focus multiple beams onto an asteroid 'painting' their targets to mathematical precision.

Small darts, no larger than your head, are shot out to intercept and plant themselves upon their target. The station's magnifying-cells focus a concentrated beam of the sun's energy onto the darts. Inside the darts is a microcosm of algae and shrimp that grow at an outstanding rate producing excess gasses, causing the darts to 'balloon' up at aquard pressures. The gasses come at a constant rate and are filtered towards tiny combustible chambers. The 'darts' then use their new means of combustion to steer their target slowly off orbit around the solar-system.

Natural Eye by S.E.E.

The idea behind this is simple: people with devices meant to overcome problems usually want to look like everyone else, not a cyborg. Beyond that, a device can and should aim to be compact without large battery packs or interfaces stored elsewhere on the body. Natural Eye attaches to your existing muscle structure allowing free movement, and the innovative junction connector allows for seamless unity between the optic nerve and the True Sight processor. Lenses w/ motors controlled by natural muscle impulses means focusing is as intuitive as ever. The cornea can be removed easily on an outpatient basis allowing for easy maintenance/recharge visits every ten years or so. Restore Your sight Without Setting Yourself Apart!

Originally developed for the big screen, initially to provide a simpler method of 'aging' an actor, the technology quickly started to allow prominent stars to take on parts that they wouldn't normally be suited for, at least visually. As the technology progressed it became cost effective to produce a model for the consumer market, maintaining its link to acting with the comedy/tragedy 'smile'. Unfortunately Internet users have been bombarded by their overly blunt advertising. Celebrity sightings have increased exponentially since its introduction.

Tramp Transport for Total Travel Towards Twilight

While the rich, famous and good travel between the stars, their every whim catered for aboard fabulously sleek and beautiful starships, most have to do with passage aboard self contained units strapped to a Tramp Interstellar Locomotive. The Locomotive's are operated independently of the units which it pushes across the Universe. Once a route and schedule has been published by the Locomotive company independent agents book a unit of a certain mass to be attached to the Locomotive. These Units can range from large relatively luxurious accommodation, similar in facilities and comfort of a luxury hotel down to basic air tight steel containers with barely enough facilities to keep the occupants alive for the entire trip, indeed many unscrupulous agents simply pack as many passengers as will fit into tiny units not caring about the survivability.

Due to the huge profit's made and the dubious liability issues most locomotives are registered and operated under flags of convenience, the Hermes although owned by a large Asian corporation is registered out of La Plaze, Bolivia.

Most commonly found in the burial chambers accompanying high-ranking Legionnaires, these ornate sets of interwoven plates are woven and crafted with such fine skill that they are as visually stunning as they are formidable. These sets are similar to the Lorica Segmentata armor preceding this generation of legionnaires, save for a more striking visual appearance with more geometric and ornamented plates and a much more tightly knit and woven cuirass--finally with the addition of full arm protection. These suits found fewer blows reaching vitals and, more importantly, it noticeably enhanced the morale on the battlefield.

The South rises, no one knows where they got their new weapons from, the light but strong clubs easily pierced our armour and smashed our stone and wood weapons. Rumors abound, some say that they were given to them by their Gods, or they found them at a place where the Gods once lived, who knows, all we know is there is no stopping the southern hordes…

The War Clubs became the standard weapon for the southern army when they came across the desolate remains of a city from before the apocalypse, one of the less devastated areas used to be a home to many car dealerships, within these they found the tools to shape the wheels into War Clubs. The wheels are hacked and battered into clubs, leather is bound on to the handles, recovered CD's glitter in the sunlight banishing evil spirits, and a running total of kills is engraved onto the War Club.

The Griffon 'Millipede' APC transport is a next generation hovercraft designed to navigate a variety of challenging terrain. Each jointed segment is supported by a lift turbine that can be tilted to allow for forward and lateral movement. This allows for flexible navigation capabilities, as well as eliminating the need external drive blades or jet engines, which would be obvious targets for enemy fire. The millipede has two identical 'head' segments - fore and aft - that allow for immediate change of direction. On each are two defensive/offensive hard point weapon pods which have near 180 degree movement. Because the millipede is designed with components in mind, it can be customized to suit each mission. A typical configuration will be composed of fore and aft drive segments, a communications segment (picture here behind the forward drive component), and anywhere from 1-6 troop segments, which can carry up to 12 soldiers each. Each troop segment has two quick-drop assault ramps for rapid deployment of personnel. in development is a medical segment, which will bring state-of-the-art medical facilities to the frontlines.

B.P.R.D Flier

Believed to be developed from a highly modified Horton Ho 231 this prototype airframe was recovered from a research facility in the South German forests by Allied Special Forces in 1945.

Initial classification of the craft proved difficult and Air Force handed the vessel over to the B.P.R.D special organisation for study. Investigation into the vessel showed that the airframe served mainly as a support function to supplement unknown powers of levitation created by the stone at the centre of the vessel. It is believed that this stone was recovered by Axis Desert troopers in Western Egypt from an undisclosed location in the Hyrx dune-sea.

After careful trials understanding of the vessel grew and it was pronounce to be benign. In the spring of 1951 the vessel was transferred to the B.P.R.D operations section to serve as an agent transport. Used by B.P.R.D teams on special assignment to support famous agents such as Hellboy and Liz Sherman the vessel served well. With vertical take-off and landing capabilities and a top speed greater than that of most conventional aircraft this craft is a transport without compare, able to swiftly carry a full team of agents to any location in the world.

Still in use today the vessel continues to serve well although budget constraints limit its supply of fuel. Through its service strange traits appeared in its operation, such as the fact it flies quicker North-South than East-West, the causes of which have never been satisfactorily explained.

RSB - Rebel Suppression Buoys

The Pax Galactica has survived a century of famine, disease, and innumerable invasions. Our iron fist and uncompromising tactics have brought us nothing short of fruition... until now. Public support is wavering following months of rebel insurgency. Apparently, our aggressive tendencies, when enacted upon members of our public, are less than tolerated. As a result, the Imperial Applied Sciences division has developed a new instrument to aid in our controlling of the rebel forces. The USMC-RSB, called the "Rebel Suppression Buoy," utilizes state-of-the-art, less-than-lethal technology to immobilize our enemy without any threat of casualty. Deployable by both ground and air forces, the RSB is delivered, as a compact canister comprised of hyper-dense, depleted uranium alloy. When remotely activated, the cap extends upward, exposing its resonating core. The core emits continual low frequency waves that, upon contacting an organic life form, instill extreme discomfort and illness, rendering the target neutralized. With an effective radius of one kilometer, several of these devices may be deployed throughout the capital to establish a rebel free safety grid. Full-scale implementation is scheduled to take place by the end of first quarter 2281.

EyeChip Model 11-9: Fiat Industries model 2012-zz

The EyeChip model 11-9 is convenient for both public and covert manipulation of the populace. It's small size (roughly 1/4 the size of a grain of rice) makes for easy installation. Transmission through manditory government vaccinations or the more preferred method, general dispensation through public water supply, allows for immediate action in the event of martial law. The 11-9's nano-tech elements process cellular material, extracting carbon and manufacturing millions of nano-chains which extend along the efferent nerve cells of the subject. Two nano-variants are processed. Variant 1a allows for optical interface and the transmission of visual surveillance signal. Variant 1b progresses along the efferent nerves of the body, eventually working it's way to the brodmann area 4 of the motor cortex. When triggered variant 1b can create electro-magnetic interference thereby interfering with motor functions and rendering the subject incapacitated. Current production is scheduled for use by homeland security, North American Union border control and the Federal Reserve System.

It is not a comfy set nor is it meant to be. The Necronomicon Cutlery is very distinct for having real flesh and bones attached to each set and spewing tentacles on each bottom tip. The cutlery is in fact best described as a living, breathing cutlery.

The large buoyant forms of the traveling vendor vehicles are a common sight on the bustling streets of the Kyo-Tokyo-Conurbation. Different companies are easily distinguished by their dominant character-masks, reminiscent of the carried Omatsuri floats of old.

Little kitchens nestle at the hearts of the vehicles, a long service bar along the base with rows of seating so that customers maybe carried along as their orders are prepared above. With the insides of the craft taken up by floatation devices it is common for supplies to be carried bundled onto the outsides of the vehicle.

There are actually two types of robots involved in the grape harvesting. One picks the grapes from the vines, while the other receives and delivers the grapes to a refinery. The robots operate independently, and navigate with GPS and built in cameras. The picker rotates on it's axis once every 15 seconds, so it's constantly grabbing fruit from the vines. The receiver leaves for the refinery once it's internal weight machine calculates that the bin is full.

As a deep space fighter, the Verpa Class Gunship is easy to produce and easy to fly. It has a single large cannon and stores ten 2.2 meter armor penetrating explosive rounds. There is a laser sight that is used to track ships that the gunship has locked onto. The ammunitions limitation is severe but the maneuverability and firepower keep this particular ship from going obsolete. While by no means a small ship, it only has enough room for a single pilot, so all of the controls must be stored in the cockpit and there are few backup systems. The upside to this is that the ships themselves already are not huge investments and can be replaced easily.

All wheels have an extreme negative camber, in the front the angle helps making the wheel a part of the aerodynamics, at a certain speed the front wheels act more like wing flaps then actual wheels, the huge back wheels have more centrifugal force then small wheels providing a lot of stability, they have less camber but still enough to allow the top of the wheel to almost touch while leaving enough room at the botom for the turbine exhaust. All this in hopes of the widest track possible with the best air flow all around.

Starting in the center, I thought it might be funny to have a futuristic interpretation of a mobile home... maybe illustrated with a cel-shaded cartoon style and an alien low-life coming out of it. I moved to the idea that large space ships kinda become houses... like the extended cruise ship in Wall-E, except that each individual person would have this ship/house (sketch on the left).

Description

(Right thumbnail and final image) I then moved to the idea of a post-war society where dilapidated army vehicles were re-purposed as housing. Similar to how the Philippines re-purposed old war jeeps, converting them into public transportation. Link. So, shown here in the final image is a decommissioned troop transport that has been retrofitted to serve as a home. It is still mobile due to its prior purpose and many of these are in service as shelters to those lucky enough to obtain one.

The ship's mid section is capable of expanding length and width ways, allowing it to 'berth' asteroids up to a certain size. Once the chunk of rock is in position, the two main boosters are fired. The energy emitted by these boosters strips the rock down into base elements, ions, etc. The particles are then collected and sorted by the two large cylindrical nodes, eventually deposited as pure minerals or ores in the hoppers at the front of the ship.

From the outside the Cilian Flata design is slightly similar to the double flute designs made by humanoids. History points out that the Cellian Flata is ancient compared to human instruments though but far more advanced. What makes this instrument unique is it can only be played by alien species that have four hands and two mouths. Trying to play the instrument with just one mouth and two hands results in atrocious sounds that are simply unbearable to hear. Code Name: Ambush

The most effective predatory device (detection and destruction) of tanks is aircraft and the most important design feature of the Ambush is the flat surface facing upwards so any radiation emitted from above that plane would be deflected away from the source. Thus the Ambush effectively counters radar detection and guided air to ground missiles. Sources of detection on the ground are also a threat. The surfaces below the top plane work equally as well against electronic detection and guided weapon devices emanating from below that plane (ground level). To assist in avoiding detection while moving the Ambush also features a liquid nitrogen heat signature reduction and an internal dust trail signature filter is available below the tank while the tracks and track skirts are out.

While moving, the Ambush's ability to avoid radar detection is incredible; while in Hibernation Mode, the Ambush is undetectable by conventional means. The tank is able able to perform its battlefield roll by moving into position and waiting undetected before launching its attack. However, the Ambush can only be used in conjunction or as the vanguard of a coordinated attack with more conventional units. The Ambush is most effectively used at long range from an unsuspecting flank or the rear, destroying key components of the enemy force in order to sew panic into the enemy before the regular units take advantage of the enemy's disarray. The tank sacrifices so much in mobility and speed for its design and onboard technologies, that it lacks the proficient means to extricate itself from a close-up fray, where its stealth technologies do no good. Some particular weaknesses of the Ambush are foot and small mounted units (jeeps and dune buggies) or any other unit that does can rely on sight detection and has excellent mobility.

"The Piaggio Aero PC17 was Italy's winning entry in the 100th Anniversary Schneider Trophy race, held in August, 2013 in Monaco. Based on the Piaggio PC7, an uncompleted entry designed by Ing. Giovanni Pegna for the 1929 races, the PC17 was powered by afterburning turbojets specially designed and built for the race by Avio Propulsione Aerospaziale. A nationwide effort by Italian industry, the PC17 incorporated much early 21st century technology borrowed from Formula One and offshore hydrofoil racing designs. On takeoff a massive jet-ski type water thruster in the rear of the hull/fuselage propelled the aircraft up onto its hydroplanes, at which point the main engines were engaged.

The PC17's victory was tarnished by the mayhem that ensued when the pilot, Cdr. Vincenzo "Vinnie" Boombazz, banked on his victory lap in order to acquire a closer view of two topless supermodels waving from the sun-deck of the megayacht Persephone; seconds later his aircraft collided with the Minolta blimp. By a series of near-miracles, neither pilot, supermodels, nor airship crew received more than superficial injuries. Sadly, the PC17 was a total loss."

There was this king that wanted to go to war (with anyone), so he had the biggest bombard ever built for his army. When he discovered that the mere presence of the behemoth on the battlefield would result in the surrender of the enemy, he had his castle built on top of said mountain-sized cannon. The king wasn't one for fireworks or loud noises, so the cannon never fired. Its sole purpose was to be the biggest, most intimidating thing on the battlefield. And it was.

The people from the city never climbed the hill - fearing what they didn't understand. It was late march when the the first rumors started to circulate amongst the more observant citizens. The summit of the hill was beginning to change shape... beginning to grow. But few people took notice of the gossip back then as they had more localized rumors to contend with. It seemed things were going missing.

Only little things at first, like sections of fencing, containers, and scrap metal. But by mid Autumn, larger things were vanishing. Engines, telephone poles, corrugated roofs - even whole sections of airplanes. The city officials were at a loss as to what to do. The ever growing shape on the neighboring hill was obviously at the heart of the matter, but the people from the city never climbed the hill; they feared what the didn't understand.

But then, as the last of winters cold embrace had began to fade into Spring, the disappearances stopped.

The first rays of dawn had already cast their light upon the city below when the old man reached the foot of the hill. He noted to himself, as he always did, that the sun broke upon his back a few steps earlier than it had the day before. Several months ago he would have already reached his shack at the summit and be in his cot with a belly warm with sup; but the year gone had been long and he feared the chill of the winter would stay with him this time. Stumbling, with a heavy load of metal at his shoulder, he halted for a while and lifted his head to the structure above - his gaze taking in each section in turn. A sudden smile alighted on the old mans face, and for a moment his wrinkled brow softened into youth. He hauled the metal from his shoulder and gave it to the brambles that lined the trail.

That morning, when the people in the city below had just begun to stir, the old man lay down in his cot and decided he would sleep from now on... his work being done.

An assortment of equipment carried by a typical monster hunter. Due to most monsters being demonic in nature, they usually have a resistance to worldly damage, thus hunters often opt to bless their weapons before engaging in combat. This causes them to appear "glowing" to humans, but their "higher" nature renders them invisible to "lesser" entities, ensuring the hunter remains unseen. Hunters will usually carry a few Holy items, including a symbol of their chosen God, blessed water, and a tome of blessings, which act as wards against weaker monsters. A hunter usually carries short and long range weaponry, favouring long range over close combat due to most monsters' superior strength. Poisons may also be carried in special cases, to incapacitate or confuse foes.

IDW # 139 : Orbital-Agri Ship
Winner: Zirngibism
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DESCRIPTION:

This is an aeroponics craft that doubled as the initial colonist transport to Fumi (a planet I'm developing as my own project). So it wouldn't go to waste once they arrived, it served as a backup food production craft, as well as a haven for the overflow of colonists who couldn't all be fed (initially) from the planet itself. Components that were not needed have been removed. It is a modular design, able to link up with other crafts that come in the future, offering trade and variety to the farm workers.

Technical info:
---All of them are based on the use of centripetal force as artificial gravity. As you make your way to the center, the level of gravity decreases. Their spin speed is controlled by directional boosters around the circumference of the ring(s).
---Humans live in quarters near the outside, to take advantage of the highest gravity, which is about 9 mps.
---Most of the space is broken into smaller quadrants, to facilitate air circulation and exchange.
---Different types of plants are grown in the levels beneath, mainly with the use of "aeroponics" which is like hydroponics, except it uses nutrient mists instead of liquid nutrients in order to supplement plants. Much lighter and more efficient, and already being developed by NASA.
---Certain plants require gravity to grow properly, while others (like cabbage) actually thrive when in low/zero gravity! So the plants requiring gravity are the outermost, while those that don't need/want it are grown nearer to the center.
---I was planning for power to come from fusion with a backup of nuclear, which takes place in the gravity-free "core" of the ships. (Only one has a flexible particle accelerator tube for making their own anti-matter, but that was just on a whim.)
---Most of my more developed designs have a smaller section that counters the rotation of the main part. This is the dock, as it allows ferry ships to safely board.
---The hind and nose are opposing electromagnets, which work together to create a magnetic field (much like the Earth's one) that protects the ship from a star's radiation and the mutations that ensue, as well as electrical damage from flares.
---The round part of the nose also acts as a magnetic scoop, sucking in all the tiny particles floating in space before they have a chance to hit a ship that's going 1/4 the speed of light (which might do some serious damage)!

IDW # 159 : Ulitmate Laser Tag Training Gear
Winner: Cosmicwhale
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Skytag is a game of augmented reality jetpack laser tag. Run in a large enclosed space like a re-purposed aircraft hangar, inside the space is a plastic composite panel suspended from the roof on top of which are robots with a powerful rare earth magnet in each wheel pod, under the plastic panel a set of motorized cable drums adjust the length of the cable attached to the players on the fly.

The helmet which is is attached to the backpack by a modified HANS device/seatbelt pre-tensioner combo projects a virtual world into the players eyes, every player can chose a different them and all the other players in their visors will change to fit the theme selected.

the backpack is split into 2 parts the hard pack and the head restraint plus harness for safety purposes, during an emergency pulling the yellow handle at the base of the pack separates the 2 parts lowering the player to the ground using a compact rock climbing wall auto belay system.

the attachment bars that connect the harness to the cables also serve a purpose upon defeat players are rapidly lowered to the ground until they reach a safe distance to the padded floor, the bars are remotely unlocked allowing the player to fall the remainder of the distance.

using tech designed for laser guided munitions the games master computer determines the origin and end point of a laser beam, factors in things that shift aim in game (like wind, bullet drop for a grenade launcher, etc....) determines if the shot hits, then sends the data to the players. Because all that is needed is a laser emitter players can pick any kind of gun frame and style that suits their preferences.

IDW # 160 : Ferryboat of the River Styx
Winner: Eclectix
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over the centuries the ferryman of the river Styx has seen a lot of souls. As the population of the Earth has grown exponentially, so have the numbers of people needing passage to Hades. To complicate the issue, most of these souls no longer bring proper fare for passage. To solve both of these issues, he has created an entire flotilla of oar ships to ferry souls across to the underworld, allowing a number of souls to work off the cost of passage by literally becoming part of the craft themselves. These souls are both the materials from which the ferries are made, and the force by which they are powered. Once a soul has worked off the price of passage, they are set free on the shores of Hades, and a new soul is permitted to take their place on the vessel. It is of no concern to Charon that these souls degrade over their term of service to the point where they are little more than bones and sinew by the time that they are set free.

The resourceful Captain Gachinov has aquired himself some some centuries old equipment - relics of a more civilised era whose methods and knowledge have been lost. The engines give him respectable interplanetary capabilities and the weaponry means anyone who can catch him doesn't often live to tell the tale.

It is a double edged sword. An A.I. from the same time must be linked to these systems and the one in whose company Captain Gachinov now finds himself is none too happy to be reduced to piloting the rusty old tub, 'Tazenda'. Like a malicious genie, she takes some small satisfaction in twisting the meaning of Gachinov's orders whenever possible.

The Gravity Pulse Transportation System.

Following significant technological advances in anti gravity technology in the late 21st century an alternative propulsion system was invented. Similar to current particle accelerator and electromagnetic suspension technologies a massive global relay network was constructed to give sub-light speed to commercial travel, replacing jet propulsion technology.

Located off the coastline of major cities around the world Orbital Relay Stations are placed, allowing for people to drive themselves to the ORS and then be accelerated across oceans in a matter of minutes.

Once engaged the anti gravity system has to maintain a closed circuit before the accelerator can fire. The movable skyway bridge retracts when passengers are in place allowing for the charged pulse to traverse the orbital ring.
