Hi People

I've been inspired to start this sketch book, by the brilliant work of a good friend and colleague.
salaryman.

The work I'm posting goes back over a few years.
By day I work as a game artist, by night as an illustrator.

When I'm lucky from time to time I get to concept art for projects that the studio are pitching for.
This does not happen as often as I would like and it nearly always involves me working on the concepts in my own time.

I though it would be good for me to get all this work together and maybe some of you will find it interesting in some small way.

Over time you will see that I have had to adapt my style to fit what the art director and sometimes the style of game required.

I'll also try to post some of the freelance illustration work that I've been lucky enough to do.

Any and all feedback is most welcome.

finally!

great to see you posting here, Steve. Can't wait to see how this sketchbook develops.

Such a shame about that project eh? Anyway, keep posting, I know you have so much fantastic stuff to show and this is the best place to share your talent.

Okay, not many responses.
I guess I'll keep going see what develops.

I was asked to concept some characters for a Manga style online game.
This is the only one I've done so far, been to busy with "other" stuff.

The original drawing was coloured in Illustrator, the taken into PhotoShop
and given the effects.

emmm, maybe I'm spitting in the wind here?
Okay deep breath and go again.

This image was done for a magazine cover titled Wasted.
Pencil drawing scanned then coloured in Photoshop.
The background was taken from another image that I had already done.

I'll get round to posting that another time.

Cheers Cal.

This is another one you know only to well.
Another one that got away :(

Still this little lot will show the change in style to "fit in" with the
view about what "concept art" for games should look like by those with the power.

I'll start with the very first image.
One of the designers wanted to do a new take on an old game.

After speaking to him this was the first image.

I'll post the stages as we went through them.

Right here's stage two of the game concept.
I had to produce an image that the studio could show the publisher.

The image had to give a flavour and feel of what the studio wanted to do with the game.

I had very little time to do the image.
It seemed to do the trick, the publisher liked it :)

I was starting to think, no body was out there :)
But salaryman told me to keep posting.

You guys are just to kind :)
Thanks very much for the positive feedback.

It's a real incentive to keep posting more "stuff"

sith...... It's steve or tekdj whatever you prefer :)

The SB so far it a bit of a journey through my life as a part time concept
artist here at the "studio" with bits of my other life as an illustrator thrown in.

My background and style is originally more graphic and some of the earlier
images are in a style that I was used to working with and what the particular
game publisher wanted.

The more "painty" style has come about as a direct result of what seems to be expected for game concept art, at least here at the studio.

It's been fun stepping my toe into something new and I must admit some of the comments from you guys gives me the confidence to put a few more toes in the water :)

I know from salaryman that this is the best place to show my stuff and get
the feedback that will help me develop as an artist whatever style I maybe required to work in.

It will be a mix of style that I'll be posting.
The cleaner more graphic stuff is what seems to be what I'm asked to do for the freelance illustration work.
The more painty stuff seems to be the way I need to go for the game concept work I'm asked to do.

Maybe when I get time to play I'll try mixing it up :) see what come out.

I'm in "crunch" time on the game I'm working on and it's been a lot of late
nights this week.
In between waiting for builds of the game I've been starting this SB.

It was a real booast to log on this morning and see your mails.

These Sketches have been sitting around for a while.
I wanted to colour them but just did not know which way to take them.

Soon as I get sometime I think I'll have a go at giving them the "painty"
treatment, but for now here they are "naked" :)

Daaaayum!!! this shit is clean! it does remind me of Salaryman's clean lines too. I got ta ask cuz this is the style i'm trying to develop. how do you get those dark pencils without smudging. Me drawings seem to become a mess if i try and render. holy shit are those characters in post #12 from your head cuz if they are ... wow! I am amazed how you can shade a large area without any change in pressure. whenever i do a large area you can plainly see where i stopped and started. I'm definatley gonna be back to this page often!! Thak you for the insperation.

tekdj
September 15th, 2006, 11:34 AM
-ThePenciler- your too kind man :)
The characters are a mix really, a pose from a photo here maybe a jacket from a magazine or film I've seen, the latest trainers I've bought.
Where ever the inspiration comes from.
The pencil work is just years of drawing ( I use a Propelling Pencil with HB or B lead ) don't push down too hard, let the pencil do the work. No real secrete to keeping things clean, I have a clean sheet of A4 paper folded in half that I rest my drawing hand on.
The only other thing is most of the drawings are done on tracing paper, I really like the surface and if you have to redo anything it's handy just to see what you did before :)

Smells nice with pencil shavings right? I don't know what you need. What could you want me to say. I am posting because you are obviously seeking attention, but I am only posting so that I can receive attention. What could a lowly loser like me offer you as insight.

Well forget about that. Maybe we can start over and deal with problems. The problem is that your artwork doesn't overly appeal to me, and yet I cannot really find fault with it. So what should I say?

Art is something you do because you get paid for it. Or is it something to do because you enjoy it? Why bother at all if neither is applicable. Am I going to ruin my voice, shouting at you? Why would I do that. All I know is that you need to find more inspiration, feel your spirit burning through. Show me your guts, become a genius too. Find an idea that moves you, something that unsettles you and make that your new art project. Either that or devote yourself to pure beauty. I'm done here.

Hi KuNiva Can't really say much about the characters from the first post, but I think anyone that knows the game you mentioned will know if you are right :)
What I will say is that I was lucky enough to spend sometime with the original creators of the game that these concepts were done for and the change in style, from pure illustrator renders to a slightly more sketchy finish, was a result of my time spent with them.
They were really happy with the concepts that the studio did for the game, but for reasons I can't go into the project did not go any further :(
It was a great shame as I was really enjoying working on the project and working closely with the such great game designers :)

Haxxxor as soon as I get sometime I'll do a short tutorial :)

This concept was done as a test for another games company.
I was not really after the job as it would have meant moving to a part of the country that I did not really fancy moving to.

But I really wanted to see what I could do as they wanted a Photo real Painty look. A style that I knew was the way to go for a lot of games concepts. So this image was really the start of me getting into this style. It aint the greatest but it's a start.

Very nice work again. I notice you do the step by step work, which is great to see the process. Have you given any thought to givng a tutorial on coloring, or anything else you do? I'd like to see your process that way as well.

As far as the images goes, they're great, but I like the first one alot. It seems a bit whimsical, or mysterious, and if you're in a dark mood...resembles Medusa. I guess, the context would determine that. But definetely feels a bit magical, really cool look to it.

September 18th, 2006, 12:42 AM
haha, thanks man. anyway Steve, dude- this last one is really nice. i'm only wishing the figure stood out a little more so she was more of the focus instead of the design that's in the foreground. don't get me wrong, the white lines are really beautiful (i kinda can't stop looking at 'em), i just wish she was as too. no worries though. i know you probably didn't spend that much time on it. nothing to fret about- just something to think about. keep rockin these out!

Hyperblade Thanks man. Soon as I can I will do a tutorial on colouring.:)

Andrew as always you are too kind. I get what you mean about the
character being a little lost, this project has a way to go yet. I'm kind of
just playing around when the mood takes me.

I'm planning on doing some more painty stuff soonish I hope, but for something
a little different I thought I'd post up some "doodles"

Some of this stuff was done with T-shirt designs in mind.
The images are just pencil lines inked with a pen, all of them drawn on tracing paper.

Their nothing special, just stuff that springs to mind when I'm sitting half watching the TV or when I'm not sure what I want to do next.

Some of them end up being "worked up" and maybe later I'll post up some of the finished versions :)

strong updates man. i don't know how you do so much, work. i'm so damn lazy. i don't know how i didn't see this one btw

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v725/tekdj/kelly_hair.jpg

love this mix of the very illustrative/ realisitc look. very nice. in other news, you should design tee shirts as a late night job. ef sleep. videogames by day, illustrations by night, tee shirts whatever other time there is.

just curious steve. do you have any fantasy type of stuff. everything so far is urban, if that's the word i'm looking for. not that that's bad, just thinking a change of pace might be nice for you.

wish i could give ya some stars again. don't know how it dropped. this book amazes me. maybe you're not even worried about it. you are a professional and all. if you are thinking about that though, just let it motivate you to make something really great.

tekdj
September 19th, 2006, 11:50 AM
Andrew you know your stuff mate :)

Urban is a word that I hear a lot and it's as good as any to describe a lot of my work. I'd love to get into T-shirt and Skate/Snow board design :)

It's all just a time thing, I like to have lots of "projects" on the go at once.

The wife and I are doing a "step by step, how to draw Manga on the computer book" at the moment. We get asked to do a lot of Manga style illustrations, I'll have to dig some out and post them up.

It's funny you should mention "fantasy style" stuff, I really want to have a go
at something along those lines, just need to come up with something to inspire me.

Only just starting getting the Hang of things around here :) Just understood what the stars thing was all about, then I lost one :(

No big deal, it's great if people like the work but just as many people won't like it :)

The main thing for me is hooking up with guys like you and seeing some wicked artwork. I always though that this site was mostly full of "fantasy" style art ( not a bad thing ) and that maybe my stuff was too "urban" :) for people around here.

But it's cool to see there's room for all styles, and seeing some of the lovely artwork around here has got me in the mood to try some Fantasy style
images.

i didn't realize you had updated so much since i last popped by. lots of good stuff to see too btw. the line work for the beard boy is sick, in fact i actually like that drawing more than the finished colored version. i can't say too much about the anime (it's not my general cup of tea), but to me they look pretty damn good. of the bunch the only ones that don't necessarily appeal to me as much is the gal on the top right, and the one on the bike. but i really can't seem to figure out why. oh well. just keep doin' this stuff, and i'm sure you'll be busting out some crazy pro anime in no time.

No worries if anima's not your thing.
The wife and I get asked two do quite a lot.
We have just finished doing a step by step how to draw Manga on the computer, which has been keeping me busy.

I've just started working on an image that's a little more "fantasy".
It's taking it's time and I may do it in two different styles.

A graphics Illustrator style and a "painty" style.

For now here's one I did "earlier".

Okay this one's kind of "fantasy"
Well more fantasy than anything I've posted so far :)

First the sketches.
I always start off with a line drawing before shading the drawing.
The final image has the drawing worked into the layers.

Maybe my next image will be a bit more fantasy than this one.

It's funny you should ask about comics.
In a past life I was a comic illustrator.
I worked mostly for 2000AD, the British comic staring Judge Dredd.

I've been in two minds about posting this stuff as it was done sometime ago,
but as you asked I though some of you maybe interested in seeing some of it.

It's all hand drawn and painted.
With a mix of gouache and acrylic paints.

I'm working on a new image in the style of the left hand image.
Hope to have it finished and posted soon :)

bradley I know what you mean about the lens flare :(
The picture was a commission and the flare was added as a request of the
client, after the painting was finished.

It was fun working for 2000AD.
The main character I illustrated was Judge Anderson.

That Mean Machine image was the only one I ever did of him, shame really
he is a well cool character :)

Ah, so you DID do comics! Great! Well, as far as your posts go, I'm loving the close up of the females face the most, also in your painted style. Is the bright orange on teh eyes intentional? I notice it isn't as blended as everything else. That is a great image though, I really would like to learn how to do that, I am inexpirienced with digital coloring, and am going to be learning in Novmeber, through help of a friend, I have to meet up with.

Cheers guys for popping in and for the kind comments.

Hyperblade
Thanks dude.
The bright orange on the eyes was intentional.
I guess it would have worked if the orange was more blended, but that's just the way I wanted it :)
I'm sorry to say I don't have any tutorials.
I'm really just starting to try to find my feet with the painted style.
Up until recently I've always done things in a very graphic style.
But it's become clear at the studio I work for that it would be good for me to
develop a more "painty" style.
I guess we will just have to see how it goes :)

EVIL
I guess no one can please everyone, and the tone of your mail suggests you
don't like what you see.
That's fair enough, there's plenty of styles on this site for everyone to find
something that's to their taste.

I'm taking it that you're referring to the "painty" images in your comments.
Yeah I have used photo ref for these images.
A head from one photo, part of a body from another.
So it's true that the images are not totally from imagination, which I guess from your point of view makes them less valid.

As for the process of colouring these images.
I block the areas of colour out using Illustrator
then import them into Photoshop.
Then I use a combinations of coloured layers and the original pencil drawing.
All of these layers having different effects added to them.

When I'm happy with the results I flatten the image and work in some details
using different brushes and pencils.

That's it, so I'm sorry if you see this as less worthy,
but thanks for dropping by :)

No updates today, I guess I should spend sometime learning to be a proper artist :)

If you used an actual person for reference, I demand to know the name of this hottie now!

Very cool stuffs man, you're really confident with cel shading and rendering.

I guess one suggestion I'd make in general is to add some more visible variation in line weights to emphasis 3D, as some of your characters appear flat when foreshortening is involved. I think what you did in this one is perfect:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v725/tekdj/kaos.jpg

The rendering you do is good so I don't think it's a big problem or anything, but I still reckon your works can benefit from that.

Just my two cents, hope it's relevant.

ok, you use photo ref, you copy photos, and whatever.BUT it looks damn good and it works...i like the old school style in the judge dredd pics.Lets just say the skills you use for you drawings and painting are completely different from the skills me and other people use, but that ain't a crime, and i don't think it should be considered "inferior"...obviously, some life drawing and imagination drawing can only help you improve, but guess in this field (art) anything you do can only help you improve, so just just keep the thread up!

And everything after shows a real growing into your own style.
If I were to suggest anything, it'd be to get a little further away from photo refference. But hot damn that angel girl is my new wallpaper!

Nice bunch of stuff tekdj. Not into manga myself, however, your style is beautiful with it's graphic use of space and wonderful pattern designs incorporated in your work. The motobikes were fun to scroll-scan and see patterns change chameleon-like. Your use of negative space reminds me a little of Mucha as well. Rendering on all your figures is nice, esp. the b/w value comps.
Really fun sketchbook to look through. Wonderful graphic style. Will come back for more!

Hi Guy's :)

It's been a long time.
Sorry I've not posted for awhile, life has been very very busy.
The games studio I work for has be acquired by one of the worlds
big entertainment companies and for the last couple of months I've been lucky enough to have been working on concept art for a new game :)

Sorry to say I'm not able to post any of this work :(

However when I have had some spare time out side of the working day
I've been doing some freelance illustration and concept work.

One of the jobs was a cover illustration for a game,
which has now been released.

Firstly,

Really appreciate your comments guys :)

Okay back to the work.
As I said this job was a game box art cover.

The game is called Wild Earth, Africa by XPLOSIV, Animal Planet and Empire Interactive.

The brief was very tight.
The client wanted a specific composition and chose all the animals
they wanted on the cover.

I had to produce sketches of the animals plus cover mock ups.
This process continued backwards and forwards for a couple of weeks
until the client was happy, then I had just under a week to do the finished
artwork.

I've picked out just a few of the early sketches and mock ups plus the final
sketch and artwork to post up.

I'll try to post some more work as and when I can.
Also when I have time I'm hoping to work on a new personal
concept, so stay tuned :)

Hi people :)

I can now post one of the jobs that's kept me busy and away from conceptart.org.

My wife and I were asked to do a book.
A step by step guild to drawing Manga on the computer.
Well really it was a guild to colouring a Manga drawing that we did.

The book is aimed at people/kids that have not used a computer very much.
We had to keep things very simple.

The first phase of the project was to produce a number of sketches,
until the client found the image they were happy with.

We then had to colour the image using Photoshop, screen capturing all the
stages and supplying text to go with all the screen grabs.

Posted here are all the concept drawings plus the final image.

The book is published by Ilex Press Uk and Barnes & Noble US

great stuff man, and congratulations on the completion of your book. not the style that i like but i'll pick the book up anyway just to get insight into your brain matter.

i'm fascinated by your technique for your fully rendered paintings: using illustrator to define color areas and importing into photoshop. how about a tutorial? i'll give you some candy.

Thanks mate :)
I'll try to do a full on tutorial as soon as I can.

Always cool to have you drop by :)
Thanks for the kind words.

The day time job at the games studio has been really full on.
The studio was bought by one of the worlds big entertainment companies.
My job has changed from part time concept artist/games artist to full
time concept artist, which is great news for me :)

It's just a shame I can't post any of the work I've been doing.
Hopefully somewhere down the line I'll be able to post a few images.

Over the few weeks, time permitting, I've been working on an image to post here, I've just had a couple of days off which has allowed
me to finally finish it.

I've tried to bring two of my styles together.
The cleaner graphic style with the more painty style.
It's something I want to try more of.

Any way here it is, with some process shots :)

Tennyo.

All I can say is your work is insane especially the pieces you did back on pg 1 of the bikers with the realistic color tones. It took me a second to believe they started from the sketches. This last one is incredible as well.

Haa Haa, Calum, thanks mate.
You know it's a Moo Moo and not a Foo Foo :)

Okay I can post a Record cover I've recently finished for an up and coming
UK band, the grams.

The EP is called Mordern World and the guys wanted a Morden/futuristic city/architecture look. It had to be "clean" and White.

I found some images of the city of science and art in Valencia, Spain.
Really love the architecture and this was the inspiration.

Check out the grams on their myspace page.

Wow! been so long since I last posted.
Sorry to anyone that cares :(

I've been so busy working at the games studio ( BlackRock )
We have just finished our first game....PURE.

http://disney.go.com/disneyinteractivestudios/pure/index2.html

I was lucky enough to do some of the environment concepts as well as work on the game art.

I cant post all the stuff I've been doing but I have a few things to post.
Hopefully this will be the kick start I need to post more often :)

First I had tree concept images published in a book called...
Erotic Fantasy Art

http://www.amazon.com/Erotic-Fantasy-Art-Duddlebug/dp/0061441511

The book was put together by Aly Fell and Duddlebug.
They saw one of my images here on conceptart and asked me to submit some concepts:)
The image they liked was...Tennyo
I Also did two more for the book.

Anjo Do Mal.
O Abate

I've also done a book cover for a children's book called
Dragon's Dance by Deborah S Wallace

http://www.samedaybooks.co.uk/details.php?isbn=9780955429330&s=gb

It's not published yet but will soon be :)

Well that's it for now....it's good to be back :)
