i don't like the texture of pics when i scan them
http://membres.lycos.fr/behemot5/271.jpg
Due to a problem with deviantart, i must found a new host and delete several pics. The last drawings i drawn are posted in this thread from another host and are situated in pages 2 and 3...
sorry for this problem...

not bad.. personally I think you limit yourself by drawing on graph-paper. It may help you keep proportion but it may also decrease the energy of your lines.

behemot5
June 5th, 2003, 11:43 AM
I will try to paint it with photoshop...the main problem is that i have absolutely no idea of the colour of the background....the seat will be red..wears will be black and the skin will be pale ...

those last ones are definately an improvement over the first ones...i especially like the way you define the shapes surrounding the figures... but maybe you're overdoing the contour-lines a bit...especially on the last drawing, it seems a bit over the top...

golgari
June 27th, 2003, 02:23 PM
the lower part of the hand looks really good! i especially like the way you textured the arm with those strokes and your shading of the hand...also the vessels came out really well!
the two folded fingers look also very good, the two who are stretched at are a little bit flawy, though. the outline on the lower right side of the middle finger is still pretty disturbing,
and i think that the index finger can't be in a position like you drew him, can he? he's bowed too much to the left.
also, he's to thin at the top, i think. this strangely seems to be a common mistake. i saw the same mistake two days ago on this board...also, what's that thing touching the fingers? i can't make it out at all, sorry...
concerning your deformed figure, i think it would have been better if you didn't make the end of the first head and the lower contour line of the second head the same...an overlapping of the heads would have created a more 3dimensional feel, i think. plus, the carotid of the second head stops to fast...a smoother transition between this and the rest of the body might have better incorporated the second head...
the environmental scene is quite nice. something bothers me about the stone, but i can't really tell what it is. you didn't take care to keep in with the fading line at the top when you faded out the roof, but that's no big deal...
go on! :)

behemot5
June 28th, 2003, 03:03 AM
...golgari, i admit you're right i didn't take care of some details...fingers are not good and i mustn't add the second head....i will try not to rebegin those sorts of mistakes....
....I must work more to increase volume and some parts of my winged dragon....

behemot5
June 28th, 2003, 06:49 AM
try to colorize one of them

golgari
June 28th, 2003, 01:20 PM
hey, that winged dragon looks really great!
yeah, the legs are a bit out of shape (they're better in the colored version, yet i think that the right leg - as viewn from me - is a bit too thin), but it doesn't really bother me. the head is so cool =)
i don't like the colored version that much yet...which is probably because of my affectiveness to blackwhite-sketches and because your coloured pic is still in a strong work-in-progress-state, but also because of that fireburst, with which you killed the tongue of the beast, which i think was really a very neat addition, it made the beast so unique...

behemot5
June 29th, 2003, 04:23 AM
better like this?
http://images.deviantart.com/large/indyart/freehand/trytrytrytrytry4.jpg

golgari
June 29th, 2003, 10:03 AM
yep, i think it's kind of an improvement.
the tongue's still not really visible, though. i think for that you would have to move the fireburst a little bit up...which is probably kinda hard now ;)
the fireburst looks pretty cool now, much better than in the picture before. generally i'd say be careful with those photoshop-filters, though (you used one, didn't you?) concerning it's body and it's legs it looks a little strange now the upper edge of the wings against the background looks a little strange, too. and those green highlights on it's chests stand out a bit too much right now, i'd think.
however, keep us posted about the development :)

golgari
July 2nd, 2003, 04:24 PM
the torso looks better now. don't know which color scheme i like better, but this one's for sure nice as well.
the background looks a bit strange...i'd say the part over his wings and the part under him are too different from each other, one can't really imagine they're actually the same sky...

adien
July 2nd, 2003, 05:36 PM
hey behemot5, love your sketches, although i agree that you could soften the outlines a bit. makes the outline of your drawings stand out a bit too much from the rest of the drawing as it is now i think.

i like your winged dragon sketch, but i don't like the colored versions that much, mostly because the sketch looks 3 dimensional, but in the paintings, you've painted over some of the most important aspects that made it look 3d. the paintings look pretty flat.
for example, if you look at the head in the sketch, it's pretty broad, fairly flat, and you can see a hint of the other side of the head at the top. also there is a ridged but fairly soft transition between the side of the head and the neck. in your painting, you've made it fairly steep and narrow, and you can no longer see anything of the other side of the head, and there is no longer a transition between the head and the neck on the side. one stops and the other begins.

great works, keep em coming. :)

thanks for your comments golgari and adien ...that's right the sky is odd... and i don't know if i must rebegin the entire draw or do something else...and that is also tru that painting is flat.... i try to learn but it 's not very easy to learn alone ...:-/..... i will try to give more volume.....:(.... thanks a lot

a big leg and only one leg and one arm for this one but i wanted to give a lot of contrast and volume on this one

golgari
July 6th, 2003, 05:08 PM
wow...they all look really good.
the only thing i can say about it concerns the first drawing...his head "contours"...the remarkable shapes of the head look a little off. it looks a little bit like you first drew the head shape without any of them and then put them in later, but didn't really put them in the right way...can you follow me? ;)

adien
July 15th, 2003, 02:56 PM
i love the turtle heads. very nicely drawn. :)

i definately like your drawings that don't have the heavy outline, it makes the drawing more 3-dimensional. the creature doesn't end at the edges, it wraps around the back. the drawings that have the heavy outline are given very distinct boundaries, which i think fights with 3-dimensional feeling of the shading in the interior of the drawing.

keep em coming.

wow some pretty nice things you have in here. really like the rendering and designs. It really looks like you're on the brink of greatness,

also if you're not getting that many replies don't sweat it. It might be that your work is too good so people are speechless, plus there's just a lot of work here on the board so it takes some time to get thru them all. In my own sbook..it usually takes about 50- 100 views before i get a reply no big deal.

behemot5

I'm worry because i'm asking myself if it's due to a bad quality of drawing...if my drawing are boring....I understand sometime people prefer not to crit .... i do the same with some drawers 'cause i think i have poor knowledge....anyway when i draw during one hour on a pic i don't see some mistakes that anybody can see when they discover the pic...

I really like where you're going with your technology designs... the ships and the cyborgs..
I think if you experemented with them in another media you could bring them out and make them more dynamic..

A lot of them would look good if you traced the linework onto a separate piece of paper and markered them

behemot5,

These are good, I'm sorry your not getting the crits you like, hopefully I can change that a little :). Looking at your drawings you have a wonderful touch and your line and rendering are superb. Your concepts are great too I love imaginative sketches.

When I first started drawing I was basically a renderer, thats all I loved to do I totally left out the basics of drawing and structure and anatomy. Your beyond that point but my advice to you would be to draw as much from refrence as you do from your imagination 50/50. You will be amazed and so will others at your improvement of your imaginative sketches.

Behemot5,

You can download or find many pictures on the internet..or you can find a muscle fitness magazine or any thing that has pictures in it and draw from that. Drawing from life is the best but if you dont have models use your self and look in the mirror.

That pic your refering to I had no refrence materials basically a pose out of my head and added detail, I've been doing it a long time since I was 5. I'm still improving and I will post my progress. It takes practice alot of practice and many mistakes.

you´re no camera.
u can decide what you want to show with your images.
decide which lines to show and how bold.
decide where to lead the focus by sharpness and contrast.
dramatize through considered simplification.

keep painting/drawing from life/reference. the more you do it, the more you will understand about the figure and lighting and etc. i just set a goal for myself where i have to draw from reference for at least 1 hour a day.. . ..try doing something like that to keep you motivated because the more motivated you are, the more you will learn when you draw because you will be retaining the information.

as for the full figures, you have a really nice sense of light and shadow, i'd just say you need to work on your foreshortening and limbs in perspective more.

your renderings are really nice, but i feel like your illustrative work tends to get muddy and greyed out unlike the tank tread rendering and the fire tattoo spike guy one, which i think have an entirely different visual vocabulary say to the one at the top of the page with the skeleton hand. but more doodling from life and reference (which you are good at) will help that out with the quickness

man, what happened?!?

you have gotten WAY better! your proportions rendering and style in general seems to have taken on alot more depth.

THere is a point where technical flaws can be attributed to style.. dont be afraid of making what some might consider mistakes in the interest of experimenting and discovering what makes the most sense to you as an artist

the one above first in the post abvove at 4am is verry verry ncie
i know the feelling my stuff seem kinda boreing to me too and seem to lack life .im guessing its like any thing else at times things will click wehn u see them and say ahh yes of corse thats the way it is !so jsut keep plugin away and really look at light and things when your out side

it seems when the sun just rises and for about 1 hour befor the sun sets is the best time to really see that light verry dramatic .for many times i have seen amazing things at this time <and go out then spacificly to look >but even though i say ahhh yes there it is .. i forget some times since there is so much to see . but the forgeting times become much shorter the more i look

man thease are really nice
i really liek the one that has the device in it that says police on it

i think <though im not shure> try to do more like that one ... see the angular strokes of the pencil ?, well if u stick for a bit with that type of stroke and keep in mind that each plane/surface has its own value in relation to the light u will improve greatly ... also with the more anglur lines its easer for the mind to mesure and make judgements about the relationship of each plane<and in turn each value > .. you see ? because we seem to mesure things from edge to edge ..or from the relationship of each shape with each shape<then as u go more rounded shapes become easer also , as the circle is just complex set of relationships

not shure if i got that accross , but try it out to see .. next figure u do think about the way the light hits each surface with in the figure .. each plane will have a diffrent value in relationship to the light <keep the lines angular stay away from rounded shapes for this experiment >

Your stuff makes me think of IMGLUE's stuff (he's my roommate- a cool roomie i may say). If you have'nt already seen his sketchbook, you should check it out pronto- there are lots of similarities! Besides that, I'm seeing a lot of dudes, but not so many females. If you're considering this professionally, then you'll probably want to show off your knowledge of female anatomy too!
