Going balls out now. Time to start anew. New sketchbook and all.
Working on designing a world as a portfolio, and for just a fun story to make. With myself and a few others from the site. If anyone else wants to participate for fun, just let me know. Or just start making stuff :)

Anyways. The first part of the story in my head is about a pollen that comes across the Eile desert ruins. That makes those who become infected incredibly violent and resistant to pain. Eventually those effects wear off, however physical harm will come to your body. Rashes and cancers will take you over. The infected have joined together in search for a cure. The scariest enemies are those with nothing to lose.

Romance made the Eklipse logo
Ramona and Kell are the focus of the story in this first part.

Way cool stuff interceptor, but there is only one thing that bothers me in this one, the highlight on the guys hair: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=20897&stc=1&d=1157714977 seems to not be consistent with the highlight color on his clothes. I'm no expert at lighting, but it seems that maybe the highlight in his hair should be a little more off-white than the purple-ish color you put. Very small crit, but other than that you have some great stuff interceptor! and congrats on starting a new sketchbook. I bet it feels good haha.

Hey loren.. awsome to see u tackle colours.. and nice character stuffs. I am going to point out something though.. I think you need to look into lower legs, ankle a little. I say that coz they seem a little too tense in the joints.. the weights not being carried properly I think.. but i can't give u more details, coz I have that issue too!! so that's why i am making this comment. your upper halrd is much more strong though. hope to see more mate. cheers, Min

Nice Loren. :)
these are pretty cool. I like the intensity or your Characters and the action, very nice. I think you can still benefit from really refineing your poses and studieing anatomy more. Your feet in the last Wolf character especially his right foot is off, the ball of the foot is too big, take a picture of yourself doing this, and you will see how it looks. Also his mouth a bit flat, and he has no chin. Again take reference photos, or really look in the mirror a lot to see how things are constructed. You should really do a lot of studies from life and photography. This is how I was taught, maybe other people will dissagree that you don't have to learn like this, but some people have other ways I'm sure. Realize that everyone has their different way of learning, so do what fits you. I say use reference more, and draw from life, but do what way you think will make you progress faster.
Another thing, I can nit pic this character to hell, but I think you still need to learn the basics, right now you have a decent base of knowledge, But I think you can have a much stronger base for your art. My advice is go to a good art school. I think you can progress much faster this way. It is always up to. :)
Still keep working Loren even if there is no way you can go to artschool, get lots of instructional books, and go to traditional classes. Like Life drawing classes, and painting whatnot, even if they are at you local community college. I think it is great you are going to these MB worshops, you get to know alot about concept art, and the buisness I'm sure, but you need constent practice with the traditional application. All this art has stemed from that, it is the base of everything visual, and you need to get a good base to be a strong artist. :)

hey man, been a little while; great work! you're moving along nicely :) I really like this recent wip, nice dynamic pose and her facial expression lends itself to the action well. only real crit I can think of is on her axe; seems like when you painted in the head of the axe, the edge got longer. kinda flattened it and through off the foreshortening you had going on in the sketch.

hope I could help a little; keep it up!

IMO her skin could use some higher contrast, and you might want to change the color of the sky to something more dark blue or cyan or something to bring out Ramona more. As is, the sky sort of kind of matches her skin tone.

Good luck!

Hey Interceptor long time no see :).

Ramona with an axe: I personally think it looks pretty right, the composition, the anatomy and the angle you chose all seem to fall in place. What I would suggest is to add more dramatic elements to emphasis the action. Exaggerate her expression more (wrinkles between eyebrows, maybe make her eyes appear to be half-squinting to make her look just a tad more focused on killing) would help convey the intensity of her battle. Also you might try adding some "flowy" elements to her clothes just for this image. Something that floats in the air to enhance the feeling that she's in the middle of a motion. Like maybe ribbons on her axe, or scarfs?

Btw, is that a head flying at top left?

Apart from that I'd just echo what was said by others and suggest you to increase the contrast of your colors. I personally think the contrast you tend to have is enough (unlike mine, which is really flat by comparison :) ), but with some images I feel they can benefit from another level highlight and harder focus.

Hope that helps in anyway. Looking forward to updates.

JERI - wow, thanks for taking the time to write that. and it HAS been too long since I've spoke with you. I've always done these boring drawings of girls just standing there, trying to get into the rythm of mroe interesting illustrations, so your suggestions are a huge benefit to me. This is beautiful, your character work is really coming along nicely. Couple of crits, at the moment your paintings seem to be relying on linework a lot and no leting the values in the hues describe the forms. That last one feels like a step in the right direction now it just needs to be refined.

Also the axehead looks a little out of perspective for the angle of the swing, heres a paintover hope you dont mind.

Personally I don't care for the arm coming across her body in the color version, perhaps have it holding some other weapon/sheild or something instead?

The lines look awesome, though her feet perhaps would be more "feminine" if they were a bit smaller too.

I personally think the contrast in your character colors is looking cooler with your recent updates :).

As for that creature, I think the proportions, color choices and values all look fine. I'd say just carry on with it. I might suggest you to make his right shoulder pad to stick up just a little to balance with his left shoulder pad. I get the feeling that they're not very balanced but I could be wrong. Flip that image horizontally to make sure.

Mitchell
January 19th, 2007, 01:05 AM
I'd say the light side of her face is getting there, you just end up mudding the darker side. Try usuing more of the light skintones and not so much darker ones, I think that is what is muddying it up. Also I'd say do a lot of color studies from photos/life, and see how the light reactes to those surfaces and objects. i.e the colors in shadows. Especailly with girl faces, they have to be dealt with very delicately, less is more in most cases. I also agree with Apathy about blending.
Hope that helped some. post #63 is brilliant! I would love to see that finished. and also your pencils are brilliant.

Looks much better than previous version Loren.

Here's some things to keep in mind:

The hair right now looks funky, the flow of it is not natural and doesn't read as it should for that length. Think how the overall form will be affected by gravity, best way out of this is to get some ref for the hair and think of it at first as a whole mass.

The transition between neck and chin is somewhat awkward, consider some bounce light underneath the chin so that it will give that area more dimension.

Lastly you're flattening everything that made the dress interesting, leave strokes in order to simulate cloth folds.

Hope that helps.

'Kin 'ell Loren! Your work is looking top! There's some smashing stuff here, however you're getting like me... finish things off! I never get things completed, unless I'm up against it. You're producing much more dynamic work, and that is all to the good maytee! The light on the character in post 63 is excellent!

Have'nt updated in a long long time... I'll show this. A bunch of old stuff I gave up on. cropped out the faces, and called it a day. therefore "crop n stop"

I have much much much more work than this done in the months since the SF workshop. Waiting for a big dump to post, though :)

hey man, stuff is looking better than ever!

a crit, i've noticed on your female heads that the heads are kind of floating, you need to try to make the neck shown a bit better, i'll use the classic mona lisa to try and explain what i mean better...

http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en-commons/thumb/f/f2/300px-Mona_Lisa_detail_face.jpg

you can see the transition to the neck without making it floaty, this is what im trying to say, hope it helps...peace!

hey, great stuff man, as been said.

couple of crits, in this story, you mentioned desert, now, are you focusing on that enviroment or moving all over the world now? because i'm confused on whether its a cold desert or hot, just saying this because some of the clothes say otherwise, Ramona ( i think) is wearing barely anything, looks like she may be in warm weather, where as some of the others seem to have fur boots and coats etc, and the snake guy is on ice, and is wearing barely nothing at all, although he is a monster and that could be the reason. i may be wrong, since they could all be in different places, but i though i'd say something.

and on the TD pic, the redheads boobs look kinda squashed and...granny like haha. i think they need to be brought out abit shade and contor wise.

More!
