Hello!

After a couple of months of lurking on CA, I have finally decided to start my own sketchbook. It’s a bit daunting...

I first discovered CA while lurking on Google and looking for pictures of my favourite FF game characters [even though I haven't ever played any computer games, my friends kind of influenced me into liking them. It's very odd...]. What a strange introduction, huh? But that was long before I knew what CA was all about.

I have been drawing since I was little [like most children obviously do]. I always made up my own characters, created stories about them and worlds for them to live in. At the age of 8, my mother decided to enroll me in an extra-curricular art school. I studied in the art school for about 2 years, drawing still life and portraits, as well as landscapes, in various media. Most of the drawing was done from life. However, my studies ceased when my family moved to Australia in 2001.

I've decided to continue art at school here; but because the subject is actually called "visual art", they don't really teach you "how" to draw, but only give tasks which are to be completed either in a set medium or set framework. It gives you a lot of freedom about what you can do, but the sheer vagueness of it constrains the possibilities for artworks: schools here also tend to put emphasis on contemporary art. "Artworks", which require a manual to understand what the artist is trying to convey are encouraged and praised. It was a huge change from what I have been taught, but I continued to draw in my own time.

I’ve drawn mostly with traditional media until I got a computer in 2004, when I started drawing with a mouse [sadly, I’ve lost the gist of it now]. I got my tablet at the end of 2004 and have been drawing on the computer since. I think apart from the strange combination of pastels, acrylics and pencil, digital is my favourite media. :P

I'm not yet sure what I want to study in university after I finish school, but I know that I definitely want to continue improving my art skills. I don’t have the opportunity to dedicate a lot of time to drawing, as my school is really competitive and I have to try to live up to my parents’ expectations. However, drawing is one of my passions and I really want to achieve something that is better than what I can do now.

Anyway, I’m sorry if this was far too long and dull for you to read [I tried to keep it as short as possible, I swear!], but it sort of gives an idea about my drawing history.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

~K.

----------------------------------------------------

I have selected the following pictures as I think they are my "best" over the nearly 2 years of owning a tablet. I can't possibly upload all of them [there's about 75 of them] because then my dial-up will kill my computer. Full stop.

Thank you so much for welcoming here; I'm glad I joined CA :teeth: I will be posting my digital works, as I don't have a scanner [yeah, I know... I'm so technologically behind. Stuck with dial-up, too...]. My sketches aren't really interesting to look at though...

Just posting some really quick preliminary sketches I did before deciding what to draw.

Underwater... some sort of drowning people. Hm. I seem to doodle drowning people a lot.
21250

My character underwater, surrounded by some kind of mechanical sharks [wolfsharkplanes]. This was more of a joke work, but ah well. :P
21252

Maybe I should stop drawing drowning people and draw someone jumping out the window instead? Honestly, I have issues... XD
21257

Well, this is pretty much what I decided to work with.
21258

My WIP thread may be found here (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=76843). I'm currently battling with some composition issues, so help me out please? :^^;:

Hey kauru,

Nice to see you updating at a decent pace. I know you love drawing people but maybe you should just concentrate on painting landscapes and environments?

By this I mean more focus on the environment rather then the character, and if you really want to put a character in do it only to show the scale of things then the other way around.

Keep it up. You have alot of potential!

Kaoru
September 14th, 2006, 05:56 AM
Rayk - Thank you, I appreciate the suggestion. :P The strong suggestion, rather... XD Yes, I will get to drawing environments, eventually. >> I have a few pencil sketches I drew in my new sketchbook [the real one...] and I will take a few photos when my camera battery is charged.

Anyway, posting this 10 minute sketch I did yesterday.

23067

Going to challenge myself and try to speedpaint every day. Except at the moment speedpainting environments for me is a speedpain...

Been working on it practically for the whole day. Might be adding some planes in the background. Thanks to rayk for helping me out with the perspective and stuff. :D

Any ideas on how to make the scene more dynamic?

frostsnake - Kind of covered up the white there...

danica - Hehe, thanks; there's a lot of room for improvement though.

Yet another update. This bunch is really sketchy... just trying to get my head over what to draw. Too many ideas as usual...

30550
This is actually a commission I am meant to work on... it's a mermaid [in human form] and a half-demon, half-fairy. I mean... LOL? I have -tried- to make it un-cliche, but I think I failed miserably.

30551
Had this idea floating around in my head for a while now. Yes, I've changed from suicide to murder... It's a phase I think. :P

30552
Just practising some perspective stuff for another commission. I think it's going to be quite dynamic.

34018
My two characters, except younger and dressed in 19th century style clothes. Might develop this one.. but I don't really have many ideas about it just yet.

Someone drag me out of the browns/reds/yellows pallette? I think I've been hanging around CA for too long... *cough*layout colour scheme*cough*

I suddenly have a strong urge to draw those cyberpunk/sci-fi reflected glasses.

You can just leave them in their actual sizes I reckon, most of your images are well under 100kb, so the majority of CA members can load them quite quickly.

About that meteor shower picture, I reckon if you just go ahead and finish it it will end-up looking less anyway. If you don't plan on going any further, then you can just play around with the contrast tab in PS :).

It's cool to see you try out all these stuffs, would definitely wanna see you finish that lotus princess.

Compare the speedpaint I did 4 months ago, with the one I did yesterday.
61748
This one took 3 hours [and it still looks awful]

61749
This one took 10-15 mins... looks awful, but better than the one above IMO.

61746
Major re-work of the colours, still trying to make the background look less flat. Will be probably adding a bridge across the water.

TomteOfDoom - Rules are meant to be broken. Unless it's perspective... then only pros are allowed to do that XD

nice stuff. I still see some proportion issues, but they are different with each pic. I figure that it's the speed in which you do them. in the new one, that right arm is definitely too short.
you have some really cool stuff though. this one has got to be my favorite: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=54423&d=1164527963

Welcome to the SSG! I like your style and imagination. Great use of color and lighting in your digis. I'd like to see some more variety - more enviros would be a plus, technology, etc. I also think you could work on emotions - a lot of your characters seem to have a blank stare. Whether its on purpose or not, its very noticable. Still love how you put the focus on sasuke ;) and some of the other digis. Can't wait to see your progress from here.

Whoa, I wonder if you can even browse CA properly with a dial-up. I've got broadband and I still have to sit through lengthy loads when I look through sketchbooks with frequent updates. :)

About the tarot card, since it's past the 17th already I guess I'm not much help now. Anyway I thought I wanna mention that you may have chosen too difficult a pose when you did this one, though it will probably make a balanced composition if you do manage to pull it off.

I reckon that you probably ought to spend more time on making the pose look right before moving on to the details (though like you said, you were pressed for time), same thing with this one:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=29904&d=1159599785

I mean I think you got some good techniques with shading and textures to make a picture look really cool, and it would be a pity if an awkward posture drags the image down.

bunny
December 20th, 2006, 02:27 AM
Hey you.
I remember seeing you on deviantart, looking at your age on your profile, and then smacking myself because I'm a lazy bum and I'm going to have to work my ass off to get to your CG 'level' and here I am watching funny cat videos on youtube :P

Anyway.

You really have improved since your first post - and you seem to be really prolific, which is good! However, i think it'd be nice to see more studies like those quickie portraits in one of your previous posts. Anatomy, perspective... I think it can really help you. Like Jeri suggested, I kinda think you jump into the details and rendering of an image before working out posture & anatomy. For example, in your latest post, the guy's right leg looks a little... small.

Other than that, keep it up! And, yeah, most highschool art classes are a joke, but I think highschool is more useful as a place to prepare an individual for all the bullshittery of adult life, rather than an educational tool.

Kaoru
December 20th, 2006, 06:27 AM
JERI - Going into anyone's sketchbook is pure die-al-up hell. Yeah, I completely agree with you about anatomy/poses and I do try to use reference and such whenever I can. However, this is something I believe also comes with practice, and I guess I haven't done enough of it yet to develop it for drawing more complex poses. So yeah, I'm trying [and hoping] that I will improve.

bunny - Heh, thanks. I do a few study sketches and such in pencil, but I don't have a scanner to post them up. I do a lot of them digitally as well, but they mostly get deleted [if they're too weird/gestural to post] or get slightly more refined.

When I post a sketch/speedpaint of a drawing I plan to complete on CA I usually don't get much attention and help with it. And I take no art classes so it's kind of a problem for me when I want feedback.

On that note: I doodled something today, w00hoo. Experience the weirdness... I think I'd like to develop this further, but I need help with anatomy/composition/ideas.

65530

I'm sorry it's so weird. I was thinking of drawing some sort of creature/monster out of the water and contrasting that sort of violent movement with her calm strength. Hmm. No eye-dear.

Weird travel/exploration one. I might develop the structures on the left some more and add more mountains in the distance to convey depth.

Your stuff is gorgeous. Lovely colors, and I think your environments are stunning, the worlds and the creativity of all of the things in here. I just love the exploration one up there with the little ship in the middle. And that last one with the girl reminds me of Star Wars and Amidala in Naboo. And that one up there with the guy and the gun and the sunset in the city? So pretty.

Speedpainting, eh? I gotta get into that, might free up my brainzuh... XD

Kaoru
December 24th, 2006, 07:57 AM
guitarjames - Thanks for the welcome, I hope I will be helpful :teeth: As for different media... before I got my tablet [which was 2 years ago] that's all I used to use to draw :D And I still continue to use watercolour/gouache/mixed media/etc. Hopefully I will take some photos and put them up as well, so it's not just my digi-doodles.

piratemasque - Thank you! I've gone a bit insane, drawing so much stuff from fantasy/sci-fi worlds. I don't think it's very good for me... but I guess it's good for practice. XD Speedpainting is useful, but I have to warn you - it's so much fun. I didn't really get any time to do any today, but tomorrow I will be trying to keep myself away from the computer, I can tell. :teeth:

Anyway, what I did for a few hours today, was to try and prepare myself for my major work for school. I haven't really used gouache/watercolour by itself for a while [mostly it's mixed media, ink or pencil], so I decided that trying to complete a piece using only one type of media would be helpful.

Before this I did a completely failed watercolour drawing of the same set up, but the paper unfortunately absorbed the water too much and this resulted in all the colours blending together. So don't choose paper that's too rough!

67527
I have two tables in my room, but one is filled with chemistry books and Japanese textbooks so I had to draw on my computer table.

67529
I generally use a medium-sized brush to fill the basic colours in the painting. I like my paintings to have a slightly rough feel with all the brushstrokes visible.

67533
I tried not to make a mess...

67535
I went over adding some details with a really thin brush. I think that took the most time out of the whole thing because I didn't want to mess it up. The colours are also slightly different from what they really are, as the lighting in my room isn't great and it was already dark when I took this photo. I will take a better one in the morning tomorrow, but anyways.

67536
This is just to show how the wrong paper can screw up your watercolour painting... I'd recommend at least 150 gsm. I mostly use 190-210 gsm. As you can see, this was a serious mistake.

Anyways, that's all for today, I will update tomorrow with some speedpaints and such. Hope it's been slightly informative and remotely helpful.

Washing brushes is so time-consuming. :teeth:

Hi, welcome to the SSG!! I'm sorry it took me a while to get here.
Traditional paintings are my fav from your sb!! Ever started a piece traditionally and played with it in the computer? I bet you could get some killer results that way.
Last pic has a lot of potential. I think the girl could use a more dynamic pose. I don't mean changing it, just giving the current one a little "flow" so we can feel the weight of the gun. Try using the opposite shoulder-waist principle (contrapposto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrapposto)) and spreading the legs a little bit, they're looking a bit stiff right now.
Keep it up!

Nice rendering and ideas. It took me a while to get to this sketchbook as well, too busy. I'd work on anatomy and linear perspective. Both are getting better throughout the sketchbook, but still need work. All your faces look great, but lengths on limbs aren't consistent, and some body parts distort because they don't follow the perspective of the rest of the piece. In this piece http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=65530&d=1166613896 the way her legs are situated makes it look like she would fall off or is sitting on a different plane than the rock. In this piece http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=60602&d=1165646359 the thigh is way too short. In this piece http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=65377&d=1166581080 the upper body is way too big, or the perspective is off. From your latest post, I'd suggest freshening up on leg anatomy, as it seems faked, just generic leg shapes. These crits might sound kind of harsh, but with your level of rendering skill, if you fix these structural problems, then you'd be a complete badass.

Kaoru
December 29th, 2006, 03:56 AM
fedezz - Thanks for the advice, I tried to fix the pose today but it still needs more work.

Blue Severin - Harsh crits are great. :teeth: Yeah I'm aware that I need to work on anatomy more. I'm going to try and do some more study sketches. Makes me wish I had art lessons or something.

Goal: Become a complete badass by January. [I wish...]

wow, every new post shows us you're improving with a great speed! love the number #22's first peace "twins" and the #63...if you'll add more slight highlights to it and a touch to the hair a bit, it could be a masterpiece.
cheers

cgoz - Thanks. I hope I will find some more time to draw, as school is getting really busy at this time. Must concentrate on preparing for exams.

Chose the grossest colours I could possibly find. Took me probably around 20 mins today.

Chermilla - Thank you, I think it's going to be my favourite picture so far [if I don't stuff it up].

Pencil [omgwhatsthat], in my moleskine [the paper looks darker than it really is because of the horrible lighting].

yeah, that one's pretty good man. As far as wishing for art classes, what I've found is that they tell you the same shit you learn here, you still need to learn it on your own, the only difference is there're grades involved. But drawing from life kicks ass so do that. The ear looks kind of small, but good work man. I'll have to start doing the update thing again too.

Blue Severin - Rayk happens to have small ears :teeth:

Posting some screenshots from the school project I was working on today. I made a sort of animation of the even files on OpenCanvas. Took me a very long time, unfortunately.

Hey dude haven't seen your SB for a while, nice updates :)

That's actually Rayk in real life?

With that latest update, I think her left arm is shorter than her right arm, and I think the length of her leg from her knees to her feet is too long in relation to her thighs.

really like the girl with the glowing blue tatoos. Is that pencil portrait rayk? :) I think the girl could have more impact if she wasn't dead center. Keep up the good work.

That portrait of rayk looks awesome! Crits for your digis: I like a lot more your quick and sketch pieces, it seems to me that you are over-rendering the more finished pieces. Just a thought.
Cheers!

Yup, that's what Rayk looks like in reality. Isn't he handsome?

School just started again for me, and this is the final year, so I have to sort out a few things first, because I flood my sketchbook with updates. I'll be posting a few photos/screenshots of my major work for VA. Oh yeah, I'm going to get adsl soon, so I should be able to access your sketchbooks better.

Anyone want to read my creative writing major work for English Extension 2 [it's a 6000-8000word story]? Joking, of course. No one wants to be put under that sort of torture.

Mixed media practice piece for VA. Had 20 mins of the lesson left, so decided to use the time productively. Bad quality photo. But it's not computer edited at all.

I challenge you people for self-portraits!

Heh, now i'm curious what your creative writing is like :) Love the girls but the background is so rushed it takes away from her - it would be better to do accurate suggestion with a few lines than clutter it up like that. Keep up the good work.

I'm starting to waver in deciding what colour her dress should be... the pale green was good because it didn't distract from her tattoo, but I kind of like more saturated colours as well. Any ideas?

Showed the teacher my animation. She said it wasn't "deep" enough. VA hate... Going to have to do some major alterations to it. I just wish it wasn't 5000 frames. -_-'' I'll take some photos of my pencil progress sketches in my VA journal tomorrow.

Damned lack of time.

Hey kaoru, stuff is looking great. Really like the portrait of the girl, but one thing that stood out to me was her lower lip - the right side looks flat, might want to adjust the darkness of the edge. Really like the looser brushstrokes at the bottom. I like the girl with the tatto, but is that energy supposed to be around her or behind her? If its around her, some of the lightning/etc should be arcing in front of her, and she should be a slightly lighter value. I can see that a little on the edges, but i think its too subtle and it kills the effect. Great job, would like to see you post more often :)

rated you some stars! I love you tight your finished digital paintings are, very very clean. You have great skill there. Your figure work is great, could improve with more life studies but definitely rocking so far.

Fishspawn - Hey, thanks for the comment! I haven't decided yet about the origin of the energy ball/plasma sphere yet. I suppose I should decide soon... >>

TomCardin - Wow, thank you o_O I'm not deserving of stars yet though... [note the "yet"] :teeth: Yeah, I'm attempting to do more figure studies when I can, but it's hard since I don't have much time these days [final year of school].

Refined it a bit more and made the eyelashes more realistic. Will post the whole image soon. Does it get more detailed than that? Going to be printed on canvas [a reasonably large format] if the teacher even approves of it.

Dad told me to draw some pimples on her. -_-

Your work just keeps evolving. It's pretty crazy, you're improving at such a fast pace :) I'm envious.

about this girl : http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=102158&d=1172929801
her glowy tattoo things kinda look pasted on; they don't quite follow the dips and curves of her shoulder. Maybe make the glowing part a little bit more subtle? Hmmm.

I look forward to more updates :)

I like the figures, but something about them is making them kinda flat. Maybe some harsher cast shadows and some core shadows would help that.

Kaoru
March 31st, 2007, 10:46 PM
Wakkawa - Thanks, I'll see what I can do about it next time. I tried to eliminate the flatness with the light, but clearly it didn't help. >>''

Woah, daily updates again! Exciting :) Really like the simplicity of that first one. I think it would have more impact if where the light were behind her it blended with the outline so it looked like the light was bending around, not diffusing and then her being outlined. Painting kind of reminds me of Disgaea :) Good SP but i think the lines of the features are a little too heavy, especially the nose.

Keep up the updating, I'll be stopping by here more often :)

Like the purple and red ladies - love the way you did the faces and hair. I think you should brush up on anatomy of the shoulder/clavicle area, looks off in a few of your drawings - especially the purple one. The debris/orange light really adds to that piece, good job. I think it would be even better if she was a little more off center - right now she is almost in the middle. Keep up the good work :)
