hey there,

First instead of using MS Paint, try using adobe photoshop. Tell me more about yourself. What is your background?

It is very hard to get good at drawing and NOT do it for a living. If you really want to get really good, it will take more than just doing it for fun. You must dedicate hours per day. And over the course of years, eventaully, if you stay comitted, you will be fine. The way to make people take you seriously is to draw alot, everyday.

One of the first things any beginner should learn is to draw from life. Draw an apple, draw your hands, draw your classmates or parents or siblings or pets, draw a plant, draw a toilet... draw a corner of your room- just pick up a 3 dollar sketchbook, a 12 cent pencil, and you can do it. Do it for 2 hours for the next couple months- 2 hours every day, and post it here. The more you do it, the better you will be. Forget photoshop, forget MSpaint. Forget everything now except for pencil and paper.

Hello Vishakh. Here is a link to the CA Academy:

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=64

It contains an index to many of the useful threads here on CA, organized by subject.

Another good place to visit is the Daily Sketchgroup:

You have to draw everyday, but to do that you must first learn how to draw properly, to measure and have an eye for value. (shading, the gamut of greys between black and white)

If you do not know how to measure, and you do not have an eye for value, drawing everyday will only frustrate you and you will not learn enough.

So, you learn to measure.

To measure, you can compare. For instance, a typical man stands 7 human heads tall. Or, you can measure angle, by holding a straight edge against the angle you see before your eyes, and match that on your paper by moving the straight edge over your paper (still at an angle)

To discern value, it helps to squint. This will help you pick out large blocks of dark areas. You have to find out what side of the value scale a value is. Dark or light?

Hi, there! If you want a crit, off the top of my head I'd say study the fundamentals before trying an abstract/stylized "style" like this piece. Rules must be learned before they can be bent or broken. I can tell what it is, but to be perfectly honest it looks like an MS Paint doodle and not a finished work of art.

You want to be an artist so you can "just draw anything"? Granted, I'm a rank amateur myself, but I don't think it's ever possible to "just" draw "anything." Concert pianists don't just play anything. Master architects don't just build anything. So artists can't possibly expect to just draw anything. Like any field, it all takes lots of hard work and dedication and practice, practice, practice - it's only the end result that makes it look like you "just" did something effortlessly.

Looks like you have the first prerequisites: determination and a goal. Now comes the tough part (the part I'm still mired in) - doing the work. Looks like the other replies have that covered.

Incidentally, who is this "everyone" who is "making fun" of you or your work? Are they people who don't think art is a real career, or people who don't like your work? If it's the former, five minutes poking through this site should be enough to tell you that there are careers in art. If it's the latter... if your goal is to be an artist, ignore them and keep making art. If your goal is to be popular, stop drawing and do whatever you think will make you popular. You can't make people like you. You can't even make them respect you. But don't let them make you not like or not respect yourself, or your career is finished before it's started.
