How should I set up my Adobe Gamma

Well when you finish the wizard adjust the brightness/contrast and so on, how much gamma should I put on? I don't know if I effed my screen up with these settings, but the values in my PS work is always complete schiss :/ Its always too dark and contrasty, I dunno. Other than my complete lack of knowledge in the technique of applying values, do you think my Gamma settings could be an issue?
