how to create grainly look?

I really love these grainly textures in many digital paintings. I have been praticing photoshop painting myself for quite a while but can never get any effects like these. How do you make them? Any tips or tutorials appreciate!

Using custom brushes can give you a lot of textured effects.

check out the adobe exchange, they have a whole bunch of free actions, brushes, styles, etc.

But it is much more fun to create your own, like Flip said.

You can also take photographs of textures you like and layer them in.
