Stupid Painter 7 problem...

For some reason in painter 7, When I make a new layer and set it to multiply (or any setting for that matter), I wont let me paint on it. I can paint on the origional layer however.
Does anyone know what I did?

Some brushes in Painter will not work directly on a transparent layer. They will work directly on the canvas, or on a layer if you first fill the layer with a colour via the bucket fill tool, or over colour applied via a different brush.

Brushes using the 'drip' method especially fall into this category.
