Hey all. Posted a wip a little while ago, but was unsure about the skin tone. Was directed to Linda Bergkvist's stuff. Here's the (albiet small) result of my experimenting.

Dunno, it still seems a little flat to me :[

ah, you know what would help you out.. there is a chapter in loomis book (you can find it somewhere to dl) which talkes about planes. Planes are like the blueprint of how the body is defined in shape. Also when your practicing with skintones.
1. where is the rest of the picture. working on small part doesnt help you fully learn about skintone.
cause if you want to know how to use skin tones. you must understand how skintones are applied to the form. (the face)
and besies using that pallete . try learning or figuring out for other skin color, or other skin types.
i hope that makes sense

Really I think your tones are good, I did not add any new colors. What you should realize that as far as flatness goes, you've picked an very difficult and limiting view... straight on and central lighting. Mostly what I've done is shift your light source a little to the right, picked out additional highlight areas, added a cast shadow under the nose, and deepened some shadow around the edge of the face and on the shadow side of the nose.

Guess I'm still lacking a bit of confidence when it comes to appying colours. But I see how by shifting the light source a little you've added much more depth to the image. Seeing your paintover helps a lot thanks for that :teeth:
