Im trying to figure out some alternatives to graphite. It takes forever to get a super smooth texture with so many layers. What are some good techniques/media/mixed media that i can use to still get a photrealistic look but cuts time in half. Any ideas?

The technique you're using can effect speed. If you're using hatching then of course it will take forever. It's also possible to build up a mid-tone pretty quick basically scribbling in a general direction with an F or lighter, then you can leave it as it is or smudge it with a blending stump, tortillion, or whatever. Then add the darks and erase highlights. I recently saw in Scott Robertson's "How to render Matte Surfaces" dvd, a technique where he put down his basic values using chalk, then went in with pencil to get more refinement. Could also try graphite sticks, then blend those. Paper is also important if you want a really smooth texture, something like bristol board works well.
