Well I guess this is my first post and hopefully not the last. I feel a little uneasy putting my humble scribblings among all these professional works of art, but I guess we all start somewhere. I'm just a humble student with much to learn and a hope to some day get paid for this stuff, so crit mercilessly. :)

I've recently started preliminary work on a card game (if only I could program I'd make it a computer game), mostly just to fill all the downtime at work. I don't even have the rules really worked out yet, just a rough concept and some initial art work, including this one:

And here's the original sketch:

The drawing took me four hours and the Photoshop coloring about the same. I've been drawing all my life, so I've gotten fairly comfortable around pencils, but all this color and light are still pretty mysterious to me, so that's what I need the most help with. Also, I probably got a little carried away with all the lines on the arms, but oh well.

All comments are appreciated. :)

mm this deffinitly needs a BG or else it's hard to imagine the complete context. nice start anyhow.

I think that the original sketch is freakin' awesome - nice and clean, but the coloring leaves something to be desired. The colors seem very "out of the tube", and there isn't much that's been done to show a lightsource, or that the metal is reflective, for instance. I also think that the sinew in the arms is inked too heavily - in the original drawing, the lines are more subtle, but still "heavy" - but it works. In the colored version, all the "subtle" lines are now inked and stand out much, much more.

i agree with fireflights, do some lighting/color studies. draw some simple shapes and light and color them to start with. sketch is awesome

I agree with the above said. the sketch looks better then the color but the sketch is definitely very good. with that said you are pretty well off just keep studying forms and keep coloring your sketches...for that is the only way to learn! good luck

Card Game? That can get a bit too complicated, I suggest a humble board game, but with original elements. Possibly those characters can be chess figurines? but at the same time keep it real, and original and the benefits will be apparent.

looks like on the arms you drew great muscular structure, but either he's extremely ripped or you forgot to put skin on his arms.
