On their website bio they say "Hard Rock".
Slash
August 28th, 2006, 03:39 AM
Personally i'd say its nu-metal. This will probably be disputed by fans of the band who doesnt like to have this genre pinned on their favorite band..
But i say if it quacks like a duck...
If you wanna know what heavy metal is, go listen to black sabbath, deep purple or led zeppelin.

I cant believe im actually posting here. Lol-city, population: me.
As Slash said it's really Nu-Metal.
Heavy Metal these days is really going into alot of subgenres. There are so many Metal-influenced bands these days its hard to define new just plain "heavy metal" bands. Stuff like grind, death, doom, hardcore (that might be going a little far). But Disturbed, by my opinion is Nu-metal. On another note, Have a listen to something like As I Lay Dying, Caliban, As Blood Runs Black, August Burns Red, The Knife Trade. Thats really great stuff :P
Oh, and get drawing too.

jsut because they are have a heavy metal label dosen't make them heavy metal. I agree with slash also. Go listen to some iron maiden if you want heavy metal. If you want real heavy metal go listen to amon amarth, or slayer, or cradle of filth or something like that. Why do you even care? Just because most of the people who have responded here dont like disturbed, or dont agree that it is in fact heavy metal dosent mean you have to try to prove or justify anything here. If you like them you like them.

They may count as metal, but they're definately not heavy. This is Heavy (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=100258618).

hmm................ well what does it matter? I love them and thats all that matters :D Isn't people like Black Sabbath and Led Zeplin more classic rock? Does the meaning of 'metal' change between countries?

Disturbed is very disturbed especially with the lead singer doing that weird random voice thing after every sentences he sings. The novelty wore off real fast.

lol cradle of filth :P the're nu-black metal :D Yeah, & if you like disturbed, everybody can just fuck off. I love Korn for example. If you want some metal suggestions, check out: Manowar, Iron Maiden, Metallica (older stuff), Iced Earth, Slayer, Bathory, Symphony X, Destruction, Nightwish, Lacrimosa, Sepultura, Stratovarius, Gamma Ray, Dio, Yngwie Malmsteen. Kick ass stuff. If it's in bold, then it means it kicks ass.

August 28th, 2006, 08:26 AM
Yngwie Malmsteen is the bomb!
And yeah, Iron Maiden, Metallica and Iced Earth will remain my favourite exponents of the metal genre.
Why is this thread here again?

I think this whole subgenre thing really goes on my nerve... and confuses everyone... I am not really sure if disturbed themselves know what genre they are put in. and in the end it doesn't matter as long as you like the music.... and I like disturbed!

Oh and about disturbed, who cares what it is?
I like them, going to see them september 23rd, but if you don't like them then you dont.. Don't go nagging about what it is and if it sucks or if it doesn't. Everybody can figure out for themselves what they like and what not right?

Since this has probably attracted some metalheads already, I may as well tack-on a question of my own:
Where does Blind Guardian fit into the whole metal-categorization?
I've heard it described as power-metal, what constitues the label of 'power-metal?'
icedsoul
August 28th, 2006, 07:17 PM
well... blind guardian... for me again just metal... ok forget the last cd, that opera thingy was crap, but the new one is quite good.
hmm what about "fantasymetal" ?

That's what I've always called it. Never had a better description

dethklok kicks ass! blind guardian would be some kind of speed metal/epic metal band. Fantasy Metal is actually Epic Metal (operas & stuff). Good bands in this genre are Rhapsody, Dragonforce, Mago de Oz (from Spain). Wikipedia says Manowar is Epic Metal, but I rather think it's more traidional heavy stuff (like Maiden). For me Epic Metal is one of the most complete "metals" out there, since they mix so much stuff. But the most pure of them all is definitley black metal. Nothing surpasses Burzum, Mayhem or Bathory. Pure screaming energy. For what Power Metal is, check out this entry from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_metal.

I don't think I'll ever understand why Disturbed generates so much controversy - but I don't listen to radio, maybe they get played 300 X daily.

Categorizing music is a big waste of time. It should be simple like in a music store. Metal, Rock, Pop, whatever. None of this pretenious "so-and-so is a hardcore-punk-grindcore-thrash-rap-classical-metal band"

Humans have the need to categorize and label everything. It is to be expected.

Sometimes though it is useful to have all these inane subcategories, so you can better find similar music.
For the music buffs here, what various slots would the following bands fit into?
Coheed and Cambria, Children of Bodom, King Crimson, Dream Theater, Cog, Breed 77, Fear Factory? Because these days, they're ALL in the metal section.

Meh who cares what subgenre it fits into ?
To quote 2 friends of mine
A= I heard you are pretty much into Metal...what genre you like most ?
B= The good Metal
(besides ... to all thopse Nu-Metal haters = Hating the current evolution of Heavy Metal is like hating their own kids for being different...)
Jack the R
August 30th, 2006, 03:45 PM
I'm with corky13, "similiar" is not the same thing as "good." If you want good music, you have to browse the top 10% of each genre.
Mr Man

Someone needs to close this thread.
Everyone sees music differently and everybody likes music differently for their own personal reasons. Also people have different opinions of what catagory something is, this is with music, people, even art. Theres always someone who will see something different from you.
As long as you love the music a band/singer/DJ creates then it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks of it because its close to your heart.
But like Mr Kaufman said dont depend on it.
Music is an amazing thing yet silence is also.

If you want good music, you have to browse the top 10% of each genre.
NOT THE TOP, the BOTTOM man, the bottom, the ones that BUILT the genre. not the top 10%
the top %10 would be blink 182, sum 41, creed, and shit like that
you gotta go for the ROOTS man, not whats popular in ANY genre. (popular with the MASSES that is...popular with true fans? thats different.)
i dunno...seems like when a band gets popular, they start to suck ass.
prime example: chevelle. their first album was fucking awesome, it was like a cross between tool and nirvana, fucking raw, beautiful work. but then they immediately went downhill. theres a hundred fuckin bands out there like that that with an great first album. some make it to a second album, but most dont.
those that do, they stick around, like Tool, or the deftones (unfortunately they're on the verge of selling out)
i dunno man, if all you listen to is whats popular, you need to turn off the radio and go hit the music stores looking for more *underground shit.
*underground meaning, NOT on TRL
