Well what can I say about all this wonderful artwork?....Nothing! Or I'll get banned!
Hahaha..just a little humor there for you. See they are threatening to ban me now and I'm trying to prove that anything "offensive" I've written was meant to be taken as comical. Hahaha... See it feels good to laugh, right?
What I like best about this art is that there is no naked people! (joke, just a joke! haha).
Ahem. Well my serious opinion about this is that you need to draw from life/reference more. That's pretty much what I tell everybody. That's why I write all this other stuff. It's not meant to HURT anyone, just keep the post interesting!
Keep up the good work, and maybe I'll visit your thread again (if this post doesn't get me banned).

Ellow spats, tnx for posting in me sb. damn you too btw, im all fired up again and gonna start another head.
anyway, youre doing pretty well here i see. Not sure if it works for you. but i NEED to restrict myselve when drawing. Draw just one thing 15 times over really makes things easy. I just draw 10 heads simultaniously. 10x the nose, 10x the eyes 10x each step. I dono but it really helps me to FOCUS on the job. You`ll make leaps that`ll leave you babbling gibberish :)
anyway, each to his own, your results my differ etc etc. anyway, keep at it!!
ps
you got a lot going on, i quite like this one especially. looks fun and well, good

Seedling - Thanks for your words. I do hardly any life drawing (twice a year or so o.0) but every time I do some I feel like I learn something new which means... I've been apparently wasting my effort for the past few years -_-
Dile - Välkommen tillbaka Dile! I do infact draw a lot. I do most of my pencils at school thanks to the incredibly boring lessons. Pretty much all of the stuff I just posted is "fresh outta the oven" a few days tops. For instance, the silly expression page is maybe a week. Anyway, I'm sorry if I broke some forum guidelines :(
I just recieved super-mega confidential lineart of a walrus wearing a fez(no, I don't have a fez fetish. Just a weird coincidence...) and I'll try to have something worth your while ready as soon as possible.

Hey Spats, thanks for popping by my sketchbook :)
I'm afraid that I can't give you any advices aside from PRACTISE ANATOMY! :D
Really, it's crucial if you want to become a professional artist, and there is no other term that you will here more here on ca.org than just that :P
I like the style that you have, and these (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/dweezl/CAdotOrg/pencils.jpg) sketches looks very clean :)

What's up Zynic!
It was my pleasure and thank you for your kind words! I know I really should get a hold of myself and start studying the foundations of anatomy, got some sweet books on it.
Been really busy lately so I have hardly any time to draw, I will try my best to keep this alive somehow though.
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/dweezl/CAdotOrg/carebearcopy.jpg
Here's a draft of an image I thought about finishing(which certainly isn't like me). I'm completely unfamiliar with workflows and bad at using layers, I keep forgetting to add them...
Anyway the outline of the image is that x is picking flowers and y (being the dude standing behind) surprises him. And well, bah I feel retarded explaining this, another silly warcraft joke. A mate gave a few nice crits on it: like changing the perspective to be viewed from the flowers point of view. I got a damn cool image of it in my head but seems pretty hard to make :bashful:
Any comments & especially crits are most welcome.

Hello fellow drawer,
I see creative things happening, lot of cool characters.
I really enjoy your use of color in the sun scene with palms , brushstroke is like pro do.
i see you're doodling on your class notebook, this make me remember a lot of things. I just recommend you to force yourself to finish those drawing they can be the most interesting ones. And sure you're not wasting your time, even if you don't draw like they do in academy or school you're making your way to great art.

Hey spats, you seem quite able to draw on a wacom, something I havent mastered at all. Anyway, if you want to improve on the anatomy, perhaps let go of the value stuff and use the time you gaing to do more anatomy?
also, what seedling said: it pays off to stick to one thing and do it often. Heck its easy even. You dont have to invent the weel everytime over. You build your skills up with the once you acquired with the previous scetch. Works for me.
I do find you brushwork mighty fine. Keep it up but dont force it i guess. Drawing and stress dont work too welll

thanks for visiting my sketchbook.I see you are quite interested in drawing, but unfortunately, that isn't enought. If you wanna get better, you'll just have to keep drawing and drawing, and improvement will come. But one thing i can tell you, is that before going digital, you should practice alot more with trad media.Just focus on one thing at the time, practice and you'll get better.Make sure you get your hand on some Loomis books, they are THE best to start with (but don't just look at them, the only way is studying everything you see).At this point, all i can say is keep this threa updated frequently, and improvement will come...good luck ;)

hey man thanks for stopping by. . .hmmm first of all, VERY good sb - you're studying the right stuff and the texture in your digital stuff is awesome. In fact, I might as well just ask - how do you do it? I'm trying to work more like that in my digital work and am having a lot of trouble. . .so thanks in advance if you have any advice!
if I had a suggestion it would be to throw in some studies from life along with everything else. Start out simple - white cubes and spheres if you can - and I think you'll find that it'll help you tremendously. There's just things you learn when working from life that I don't think it's possible to learn any other way.
anyway man don't slow down

Mag-Neo - Thanks for your words mate :D
jkior - Hey there! Many thanks for your kind words. Very good advice there, I'll be sure to put it to use.
Now concerning the textures:
I presume that you're working under photoshop so you can create your own texture brushes like this: 1. Open a new medium sized canvas. 2. Start making a hellova mess with all the brushes you have, both hard- and softedged ones(best if you keep the color black though I think o.o) 3. When you're done open the edit drop down menu and choose "define brush preset". That'll save whatever you were doing as a brush which you can then fiddle around even further with the brush options.
I have a crapload of brushes I made myself but also for instance m@'s brushes which you can find from his exclusive sketchbook section, I think. Just dl'd them recently so haven't really gotten myself around them yet.
Well couldn't post without some pics so here goes...

I like yore mechanical knight stuff. you have some very interesting ideas. but to get those across to your viewer you have to grab them. I suggest you ask your mom for 60 bucks and order Bridgman's anatomy no other anatomy book will do. and practice life drawing like three or more hours a day. bring a small pad of paper with you every ware you go and if your not doing anything draw whatever in front of you it doesn't even have to look good as long as your drawing something this over time creates the right kind of connections in your brain so you can easily draft anything quickly. find some artists you really like and copy their work when you do this you can learn some of their tecneques. lastly believe that you can accomplish anything. never say that artist is way better than me I can never do that" you can. people who don't understand art will tell you its a magical thing called talent. its not its practice, knowledge, patience and heart and if you work at it you will be greatly rewarded. I wish someone would have told me this when I was in high school.

Let me start by saying that you have a solid start and it's good to see that you are doing a lot of greyscale stuff, it will certainly help your ability to convey volume. If I may offer some advice: It seems you have a tendency to let your work get a little muddy with too many dark greys...don't be afraid of highlights! You've gotten some nice highlights on a couple of these, but most are pretty muddy. It also seems that most of you color work is moncromatic, meaning shades of the same color...changing the heat of your color will really help you to develop volume. It looks like you are starting to grasp that concept in the greens of the last landscape's trees.
Keep up the good work!
mechp

ok...well i guess muddy is not exactly specific...i meant to say they get caught in the middle of the value range...push the lights and darks!
I have the same problem! :P

Thanks for posting in my SB!
One idea i would consider for your training, is to get some really cheap, larger paper (A roll of painters paper from Home Depot costs only $2.) and draw bigger pictures for a bit. try to practice ellipses and lines, and draw as large as you can with a ball-point pen.
Any sketches that you like on the painters paper, hit them with white and black prismacolor pencils, and possibly a sharpie marker. It's really really relaxing for your hand and elbow, and i try to do that before using the wacom.
I know that if i just draw on the wacom, it's sorta constricting in a way. Forcing myself to go both large and small was good advice for me, and it really helped me with my lines.
Hope that helps you. keep at it!

V. nice landscape, cool warrior and seriously, finish the fatdude with some proper ink pls. he looks quite cool. Looking good Spats, keep it up. Btw if you cant afford lifedrawing, just go draw people outside. quick loose scetches. At first you`ll see you dont understand much. practice those side by side with anatomy and you`ll make up a lot for not studying nudes

OldNoobie - Thanks for stopping by again mate. As I mentioned earlier, I've simply had too much on my mind to put all my effort into drawing. I'm actually really looking forward to getting some time for drawing ^^.
mechp - It was my pleasure and thanks for taking a peek in mine! :D Thanks for the great advice. I'll be sure to write it down and think about it the next time I'm messing with colour.
surfacemonkey - Thanks for stopping by! Good advice. Not sure about the prismacolors, can't really find them around here :[ - thanks for the tip though, I'll be sure to try it out!

Okay stuff in here, but i suggest you lay off the wacom and stick to traditional sketching methods for a while. And, like the other guys said, get the basics down first. It's boring grunt a lot of the time, but you'll see it pays off tremendously. So now i wanna see lots of pencils okay? Maybe it's also a good idea to try some other media like ink and charcoal too.

doing traditional sketching doesn't require special drawing tools though they do come out nicer, but a crappy #2 pencil can create a vast range of values or even using an ordinary cheap papermate pen for quick pen doodles that probably won't be saved. (hence you can tell, I am financially challenged)
anyhow, those facial studies are going good .. keep it up :)

Good pencil work. Looks like you also have a good idea on lighting, to really get it solid will take a lot of studies. Some general things I find useful:
- Decompose everything to basic shapes (boxes, sheres & cones)
- Use a big brush for blocking color. By big I mean if you want to paint a head, the first stroke should be the size of the head.
- For a full value range highlights and accents are also required, but they actually occupy only a very small portion of the canvas. Midtones are where a lot of paintings come alive.
- Keep zooming out/looking at thumbnails. If it reads as a thumb, it'll read at full rez. To begin, I usually paint at 2% zoom.

hei mate!
cool stuff, for the last on I think the first(noocolor) is better, since some of the details get lost in the coloring process. try using only grey values to get the tones right first, then use a overlay(your choice) layer to add colors.
then mergge it down and start refining and adding.
hope it helps!:)

Hey Spat! Good work. Your stuff reminds me so much of my own at 17 but better. You show much more innovation and experimentation. I think you have the potential to be very successful with this stuff (like I know what it takes to be successful). Keep exploring and studying structures and perspective and really all the more technical elements of drawing as well. It's already pretty obvious that you're on the right track from a creative standpoint.
And thanks for commenting in my sketchbook. I figured I'd return the favor.

Great studies. Try not to pet your lines to much though, it seems like you rush through a drawing. Try economizing a bit, take your time, and work on those poses. Your painting, and faces are coming along very nicely can't give my oppinion on that because, well, havent concentrated on painting to much yet.
With the poses I suggest drawing people from life when you can. And, if that's not possible, freeze frame a dvd and time yourself. One of the best way to work on poses is gesture drawing, it forces you to think about the lines your putting down, so do a pose for at the most a minute then move on. Keep it up man.

The "Lancer" looks a bit too much like the one from Final Fantasy 9.
Good drawing, just resembles him...or her, whatever, I didn't like FF9.
And, I'm pointing at you in my sig (in case you hadn't noticed).

--== cheap update alert ==--
The reason I haven't had time to update is that I've pretty much had my hands full. I was asked to do some headers for a website and some cover art for a friend's band bah. That, and I'm incredibly lazy. Bear with me!
Bartovan - My pleasure visiting your sb - thanks for the advice, I'll work more on my lines when I find some time.
OldNoobie - Thanks for the support mate. I'll get there sooner or later!
max xiantu - I'm glad you like it! Thanks for stopping by! :D
taves - Wow thanks for your words! :bashful: 70% of the time I'm doing enviros I'm not quite sure what I'm doing :D I mean - I have a grand, colour-rich picture in my head it ends up boring value- and shapewise. I should get out there in the woods with a small sketchpad and a pen so I could study some shapes and perspectives.
Bonfire - Thanks for the encouragement, glad you like em!
2b BOY - Fantastic advice there, thanks for taking the time and offering me that! Yep, I am a bit impatient usually - I want to get the point across quickly but to make it look believable I suppose I'd have to draw really big and loose for a while. Also good call on the figure drawing thing. Thanks for stopping by!
Tec Thanks for taking a peek mate!
Beonarri - Been ages since I played ff9 - I looked up Freya and saw that you're right o.0 (ff7 > ff9 anytime of the day) Oh and thanks for the plug ;D

No problem! FF9 is probably the worst Final Fantasy. My personel fav is the original FFT.
Kinda scary how we remember shapes all the time, and re-use them. It happens from time to time with different artists. I end up with a character I always draw looking strangely like Sol Badguy from Guilty Gear, but without the gear head thingy...or Terry Bogard without the cap.
Love the shoulders on the grey silhouette, but I like shoulder shapes like that.
The robot with the black thingy absorbing it is cool too.

I can't even remember how many drawings I did on graph paper in my Math class. I do remember that the teacher commented one time, when she was handing back our binders, that there was a lack of little drawings all over the place, like on all my other notes.
But, I think this was the same teacher who told me to stop drawing and pay attention on a regular basis.
I'll make constructive comments later, for I am sick as well, and can't think straight.

Hey spats, tnx for your contribution to my sb, let me return the favor
The last three are fun. Took a while to figure the misty landscape out, mixing it with some color and keeping those receding values could result in yet another typical spatsistic landscape imo.
The huge eared guy shows some skinlike texture, like its wrapped around his skull to tight. The last one has a bit of "misty landscape" as a shadow setup, nice idea. The figure is static, something I cant stand very well, however silhouettes are cool. Here are some random dynamic poses to free your static pose a bit, enjoy :)

OldNoobie - I love that feeling :bashful: And thanks for taking a peek!
Banshax - Thanks for the feedback mate. Means a lot to me.
Anyway, about the contest... the idea is to draw a new character for the crazy fighting game called Tekken. When I hacked through Tekken3 on psx I grew quite fond of a character called Yoshimitsu (http://www.poprocksandcoke.com/img/articles/worst5yoshi.jpg) so I thought I'd build on that somehow. I wanted a bigger, more menacing version of him. A huge sword instead of a thin elegant blade and possibly some chainmails or other armor pieces... dunno. I just want him to be an evil-er version and feel a lot more heavy. Whether that makes sense.(Talking too much trash again!)

I have a comment on the weapons.
The blades look way to large for the hilts. For weapons like that, usually there is a longer and slightly fatter hilt, mainly in the grip. They are also straighter, because the tang of the blade would need to be a solid piece of metal to support the weight of the blade. The curves you have of those weapon grips would be more suited for a light weapon, like a rapier.
That's all, I don't have a major crit on your characters. They're fine.
Keep drawin'!

Banshax
November 9th, 2006, 07:30 AM
Youre construction skills are goin well. Meaning sense of form and perspective. I think when you finalize your design, it would be a possibility to block it in slowly. big shapes, light lines, and get the form pose right, then slowly work your way to shading. Once you get the form right completely, the shading basicly tells you how it likes to be shaded. Heck, by the time im done with the form, i usually have shaded it as well. just a thought. anyway, keep it up.
I like your understanding of form in these quite well. going down the road a bit more with blocking in, perhaps work on paper with pencil instead of thick constant lines, might help a lot.

hah the nightgown batman is totally my cup of tea. Sure left and right side proportions might be off, what counts extremely heavy is assymetry which totally makes the piece work like a charm. Good to see you testing the waters with different mediums. Though you will probably like oil better than acrylic after you try it. Oil give you time to blend colors on the canvas but take longer to dry, Acrylic dries really fast and hard to blend colors on the canvas.
Mixing color is a pain and it never looks the same on the canvas as it looks on the palette :D

The Enviroment sketches are really nice and moody, the characters is starting to get along nicely also. It's really fun to watch sketchbooks that progress. Keep sketching often, and sketch alot and you will find new technique to refine sketches and go about to paint.

I'm at work so will have to comment more later, but had to post that I was listening to KC ("Walking on Air") when I read your sig in Envisor's sb, and Tool was before that. ;)

OldNoobie - I'm glad you like it!
Banshax - Thanks mate... busy is a relative term :]
~*CIN*~ - Thanks!
MUNIZ - Cheers!
silvestri99 - Thanks for taking a look - I will!
Jason Borne - Thanks! Yup you couldn't be more right - I'll be sure to get some proper studies done asap. I appreciate you taking a peek!
Zynic - Hey there :] I'll practise as much as I can! Thanks for the comments!
Beonarri - Cheers Beo. Aye, in retrospect I guess it's a bit too Miyazaki-esqe. I've never seen the movie but saw a cool poster of it somewhere and thought I'd try to whip out something of my own.
scottmcd - Thanks, yeah - I love KC :]
Antti - Hey Antti. I'll try to get some old acrylics uploded which I've been working on lately. Got a fair share of pencils aswell ;E
well uhum... I dislike talking crap in here so I'll try to keep it brief. A new 'art school' (if you wanna call it that) opened it's doors not far from where I live so I thought about giving a shot and applying for it... the application thingy involves creating a painting/drawing(not digi! Oh shi--) of a global warming-themed environment and 5(lemme check that) pieces that don't have anything to do with anything, my speciality :360_old: !
The reason I'm writing this is to express how both confused and stressed I am mainly because I can literally taste the deadline already and I have no control whatsoever over oils. That, and I have no idea what to paint. Not that I stand a chance because the competition is pretty much out of my league but I guess it could be fun :ASDF
do yourself a favour and ignore the text... here are some pictures instead!

Hey did ya try to desaturate your saturation experiment yet?
You`d be suprised how well the values work. calling that ugly.. man u got to have a little faith
in yourselve sometime :]

I'm seeing a lot of good things going on here! I love that your painting and drawing with your tablet. I really like the experimenting going on here. Keep it up sir. The anatomy studis are looking good. I would really like to see more of the anatomy studies, I need to jump back on and do mentler studies!! His stuff is gold!! Keep mixing it up with anatomy studies and cool concepts like your already doing. I'm really digging the last robot machine. keep up the value studies also, I like that your pushing yourself in all directions. Keep it coming!! Thanks for stopping in my little book. :)

Thanks for stopping by my sb. I know it's been awhile, but I like this one (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/dweezl/CAdotOrg/fognot.jpg). It's got a good mood and suggests a lot more than it shows, letting the viewer's mind do all the work. I agree with other comments about a good sense of form also. And borrowing from Miyazaki isn't a bad thing. :)

Didn't I warn you about that traditional stuff?! ;) The hands are really nice, but the abdomens deed some work. They're kinda unresolved and sloppy. Just some tightening up and they'll be golden I think.
Nice as usual, keep it up.

Great job man, keep up the anatomy studies.
I like these last few creature portraits you posted. The wrinkly details on
them really help to emphasize form. I think you should try taking those a
bit further, maybe add some shadows or color.

Dont loose hope Spats. I think you`re just tackling to many things at the same time.
- Figuring out gestures and turning it into solid forms
- Imaginative drawing from your mind
- Figuring out color
- Proportion
Perhaps for a while do gestural stuff with simple colors schemes?
I mean Give yourselve a chance to improve withouth stumbling upon stuff you dont want to worry about yet.
That Sure works for me, this stuff is hard enough as it is.
Keep rocking it!
