I gotta do this one, first of all the topic is awesome, and second I have no excuses for not getting a decent enviro done, seeing as how it is currently my main area of study.

I think Hideyoshi called spaceships when he went: "AHHHHHHH! o____O!"

Trying to work on something for the new topic but it is still very confused... I have other ideas, I will try to paint something else during the week. Any suggestions ou critics are mostly welcomed. Do not hesitate to save my picture and draw on it in order to tell me what is wrong. My first idea was that a big starship crashed on the shipyard.

Thank you very much dragon4lunch! Hope to see one of yours! It's been a long time since you haven't participate at EOW, have you?
It still have a problem about making foreground, middleground much more distinctive. Maybe I shall increase the contrast by making the foreground darker and add some smoke in the middle ground to detach the crashed starship and of course make it burning much more... the fire looks cold for the moment. :)

Ferak Seg - I couldn't resist the invitation to paint over someone else's work. And since I wanted to get a placeholder in here anyway...
I think your self-critique is right on the money, so all I did was what you suggested: try to get some separation between the layers of background and warm up the fire (though this might be more color than you want - I don't know). You can't go any blacker than black, so rather than darkening the foreground layer I think you'll have to keep lightening things progressively farther back.
I hope you find this helpful (or at least amusing) but you pretty much already know what to do. Feel free to paint all over my snail thing in the creature of the week thread - after it goes up in a few hours.

I can't believe you guys got these paintings up before I even noticed the new thread.

Oki, first I want to thank you Chuck for solving my problem on my work. Indeed, you were right: making the foreground darker was not such a good idea and the way you painted it was really relevant. I think the image could be improved but as I think I have a better shot for the scene then I post a new one ( WIP ):
We don't know yet if it was because of some sort engine failure or an act of sabotage but the cargo crashed suddenly during the landing procedure. When it started to fall, nothing could prevent the destruction of all our facilities. For the moment let's concentrate in putting out the fire and finding the survivors!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h13/ferakseg/ruinedshipyardothertest03.jpg
Hideyoshi: Interesting mood. But as it has been said, maybe we don't understand enough the "ruined" aspect. We are surely just talking about some kind of detail here to make it much more "ghosty" ... is that even a word in english? not even a neologism? :) For the moment, your shipyard looks abandoned, good first step for a ruin...

I'm far not as good as you guys are, but this is a shame. So less participaters for environments. Thats not good. I will participate next week I think, at the moment i'm stuck in another project, so no time left. There have to be more to make good entrys for this activity.

A really good reference for anyone that is doing real ships: http://www.opacity.us/gallery87_wrecks.htm
Ferak Seg: Both pieces are incredibly cool, but I agree that the second one has more going for it; it has more character.
Stokes: Looks great, but don't forget it's "ruined," though it does look pretty desolate
[FINAL UPDATE!] Okay, after about 7 revisions, here's my final entry:
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k151/JohnnyhorseCA/EOW32RuinedShipyard-1.jpg
Description: As the climate grew more radical and cities more self-sufficient (due in part to technology), the crude shipyards of the Great Bay fell as quickly as they arose--a growing trend of mankind's achievements.

johnny-i am not anyone to be helping anyone else out, but i think distinguishing the 'port' from the ground would help it a little- maybe some more contrasting colors, or a more definite line between them?
btw, good job hideyoshe, i love it.:xpld:

Dear friends,
Here is mine but, boy, again some great entries!
I think my favorite is Stokes so far. Just love those organic forms! I look at this stuff and go... "will I ever.... grrrr. YES. I will!"
Love the atmosphere and colour in yours Johnnyhorse! The way you've made the sky pink, mmm, very nice. It really portrays emotion.
I've been really impressed with bumskee's work, sorry if this is leaning a bit heavily on some of his recent works but I was trying to replicate that approach he did of the big angular buildings in ... um, was it massive black EOW?...
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h90/_EtaCarinae/5c5cc989.jpg
The story: "In times of peace, wise men prepare for war", and that's exactly what the we were doing. Pouring money into R&D, trying to find ever more efficient ways of destroying enemy life. The propeller-heads told us the 'seeds' were dorment... small, silent, perfect. Someone should have told the navy they don't remain so around moisture.

EtaCarinae

I'm like totally new here so I'll just jump right in. I'm a bit out of my league ;) but I'll try my best! It's a giant space station thingy with build ships and whatnot peacefully doing its thing when some few bad guys in tiny scout craft bomb it into pieces. I know its a bit less of an "enviroment" than it should be, but I had it in my head and I couldnt think of anything else. :)

Journal:
03 march 2011
There is just the three of us now, My son , his old dog Pip and me. We lived on a lighthouse in the mid atlantic. The last manned lighthouse.
We lived ok,
I gave the boy as good a life anyone could give him under the circumstances. His mother dying giving birth to him and all.
When we hadnt heard from the mainland , I wasnt too concerned at first, the storms had been bad this winter and sometimes the resupply boat is late.It was when the food ran out that I decided to head into shore.
All we found was bones, bones and bodies everywhere.Human and bird bones.I had heard about this Bird Flu Virus but didnt think much of it at the time.
Well anyway it looks like myself and the boy were spared, living so isolated as we did.
Its been five years now.
I go out everyday and fish for food, and the boy and Pip wait for my return on the old dock every evening.I keep telling him some day soon other survivors will turn up.
I have to keep positive for his sake.

Thought I might try and play with the big boys.
Fish is scarce in the future, people salvage what ever they can from the once great petroleum fueled cars to build hovering ships however the precious fish is guarded like gold in the seas.
After the last remaining fishing ships were destroyed by a band of rival fishermen, 10 year old Markus Thomas signals help from the patroling rescue ships.
