it could need more detail and refining, tryed to make it lose, like more painterly, and... I suck at detailing, :^^;:

Hi Frostsnake!
What are your goals with your sketchbook? Is there anything in particular you want to learn? It's easier to give advice to someone who has a goal in mind.

Keep drawing! :-)

frostsnake
August 26th, 2006, 12:34 PM
seedling- yes I will! mostly concept drawing, coming up with original ideas... but its hard..
for the moment perspective and color study... so anything in that arena will help, also if anyone have exercises for me to do, il apriciate it ALOT!

these environs, first one was used as base for the second one..
pls comment on anything!

Well, for perspective and color studies, try setting up still-lives with boxy objects, and shining different colored lights on them. For example, draw a chair. Try it from multiple angles; even flip it upside-down and sideways and sketch it that way.

Once you're comfortable enough to sketch a chair in color with accurate perspective, think how much easier it will be to sketch fantastic architecture in color.

frostsnake
August 26th, 2006, 04:14 PM
Thanks to both of you, and -seedling-cool! Il definitvly try that.
also concept design exersises would be cool to know if you have any!:)

thank you kalango!, I was suposed to do some more environments today, but somehow it ended up being only two...

armando
August 26th, 2006, 05:15 PM
Forms are hard to read on the characters, it's difficult to tell where the light's coming from, also the feet tend to be hidden which looks weird. The cyborg characters look okay, kinda transformers, but either there robot aspects or human aspects could be emphasized more. It's kind of a let down to be vaguely robotic or vaguely human. The terminator looks human, but is undeniably a machine which gives an interesting contrast. Robocop looks and acts like a machine, but still has a bit of humanity left which creates interest. Lightnen the values of the beam of light on that second environment, the mars-like environment has better contrast in the values.

frostsnake
August 26th, 2006, 05:49 PM
WOW thanks for that armano!
about those robots.. they have muscle and flesh, the robotic parts are restraints for there strenght and movment, thet tend to go aliittle crasy without them..also there are humans controling them inside of theyr body..

and the sec evironment, I felt something was strange with it.. thanks!
used ten times more time with it, than the first one..

Meatsworthy
August 26th, 2006, 05:57 PM
I think those environments are a good starting place. They indicate depth and have a overall tonal arrangement going for them. The next step would be pushing the values on things like highlights, reflections, bounced light. I do like how the details on the towers in the first one are implied.

Watch out for the scribbly strokes. There are places where they work and don't. I would guess that in general, the higher the value contrast, the finer your scribbles can be. Try to avoid scribbling in shadows, unless it's a reflection and is high contrast with the base color your painting over. As an excercies, try not scribble for awhile and concentrate on hitting the right values.

Conposition-wise, I don't know if that foreground figure at the corner should be there in the 2nd one... it is competing for interest with the focus.

For color studies, I find copying Sargent's work goes a long way. Also take a color picker over it, and make note of the hue/saturation/value... I've had many discoveries doing that. Rendering form is equally important, and the excercise seedling mentioned will also help with that.

Oh yeh your paintings are starting to get some real character. get in there with the detail more, sharpen things up to help your eye sit still on the piece. last one is nice, but with more details on the rider it could be a really nice.

good luck.

Seedling
August 30th, 2006, 01:38 PM
Thanks to both of you, and -seedling-cool! Il definitvly try that.
also concept design exersises would be cool to know if you have any!:)

Hmm, concept exercises. . .

Here's something that could help you with perspective and give you a chance to have some concept-y fun. First, pick a chair in your house. Draw it from multiple angles, so that you really get to know it. Then, draw a crazy futuristic version of that same chair. It could be a robot-chair, or a chair that eats people, or whever you want.

Enjoy!

Looking good :) I'd like to see you try traditional media more, study the human anatomy & basics... Your drawings will become more powerful the more you study, because knowledge is the key. Also it's funny how much you can learn by studying other artists' work. Keep it up mang

frostsnake
August 31st, 2006, 06:23 AM
savii-thanks man!, yeas that was the reselution I worked in, should have scaled it up and added some finer details, I feel its kinda unnecesary to add to much detali since I was mainely trying to get a good color pallet. did more than was planed anyway..But your definitivly right I should have put some more detail in the face of the rider, since its the focus point.
I think I need to start using some more differente brushes to get some more texture in there, and variation, and I see now I need differente values in hue, on some of the buildings instead of the sandy ground color on everything...

Seedling- you are to nice!
will try it, maybe not a chair but something else, smaler I guess. will see..
scanner is up and running now pritty soon so i if works Il post something up.:)

Doyle- true, every word! I will try to do some more basics, but it wont look nice..update will come.. it must!

Two thumbs way up for your all your studies :)

With Sargent's work I prefer to stay away from the portraits he paints like Madame X, there are a few of them in that style with too little lighting information. But it does still help with colors and structure. Do some more, his water colors are also amazing... I was thinking of doing some ink wash studies like Bojee.

Just thought I would quickly follow up with the mids -> accents -> highs question. You've got it right... first work the midtones in the light and shadow -> really darks, painting them back into light -> highlights. I can't work the way Sargent does (of course), I find myself putting in a highlight or two down early just to test the entire thing... it's a hard to see errors without the seeing the entirety.

kind of hard to know what to look for..

guidelines for miself..
for skin:
1red in shadows, and more saturation on edges
2mids orange
3highlights bright yellow
4reflect environment, so for a bright blue sky more blueish skincolor.
5red-orange complements bring out skin.green to blue.

the second one somehow ended up with a filter...

Eyh yo... takk for at du droppa innom!

About your characters... try to go for constructionlines on 'em... helps a whole lot! If you can get that bridgman book back from your brother or whoever took it ;) you can use his theories about blocking in major shapes on a seperate layer... helps you visualize the forms and anatomy, and then you can go on rendering after you got that down.

Looking good though!! Keep on keepin' on!

great sb, really like where your style is going! not much to crit - maybe just be more careful of black, it tends to destroy easier than it builds. Try using it only to add some dark accents and give punch to the painting. Keep doing what you are doing and you'll go places!

Last concept is sweet! The arm/leg of the rider looses some of it's definition, though... Could use some negative space between the lower arm and the leg. Dig the detailing on the shoulder and stuff! And about the construcion lines, yeah... I have a BIG tendency to dive into detailing and shit before having the structure down... I try to think about it when I draw or paint though...

Keep 'em coming! Where in norway do you live?

Lots of cool ideas in here! Some of your characters are off balance... check yourself in a mirror or something... stand like the pose you're gonna draw... there's all kindsa things happening with the hips and shoulders that determine weight...

Keep 'em coming!

January 12th, 2007, 11:48 AM
yay! my first step by step...nothing very original.I hope the cow im making will come out better.

used above sketch as background and a 50%gray multiply layer:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v125/frostsnake/wips/stage2-1.jpg
filled in darker gray on a new multiply layer( should have been more dark here I guess):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v125/frostsnake/wips/stage3-1.jpg
here is where most of the work is done I think, painted in the basic values on a new normal layer:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v125/frostsnake/wips/stage4-1.jpg
highest highlights-new normal layer(just in case):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v125/frostsnake/wips/stage5-1.jpg
flattened image and used colorize in hue/saturation adjustment:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v125/frostsnake/wips/stage6-1.jpg
new color layer with redorange and purple added.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v125/frostsnake/wips/stage7-1.jpg
now I added highlight in eyes(new normal layer) and refined some things:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v125/frostsnake/wips/stage9-1.jpg
in final I added the frame, name and some saliva..
c&c welcome!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v125/frostsnake/wips/stage10Final-1.jpg

edit:
shit! now I can see areas that are of a differente value in the green...have to fix that for the final.
so if some on get the same problem like this its because the scan often is grainy..and has gradients so its importante to clean the whole areas around the thing your painting over.

With your life renderings (for example those babies), I reckon you can increase the contrast in general. I'm thinking maybe another two shades of darkness + a shade of highlights should do the trick. Not sure if I'm right, have a go.

personally my favs are no1 and 5...but 5 is more snake like.the body is very "classic" still. If he's a bot, you could go wild with arm n leg articulations. When you're sure of the helmet design (front and side) you could repeat a similar design on the chest plate, on the legs and on the arms. The repetition of patterns cou lead to an effective design ;)

hehehe gotta thank chuck, mate for the avatar ;)

I say, try to mix the best thing of each one into one helmet the gets the best of each one of those.
Also, try to practice with lighting simple objects, im having problems with that too, i see that you also need to get values more accuratelly, have in mind planes. Study some perspective that will help you on that.
K, good look, keep at it, i like your concepts :)

I was wondering in what thread where those coold helmets i had seen the other day, so here they are :)

I belive the the back of the custome is pretty cool but somehow seems to look like atached plastic things on top of a normal suit, maybe try to fill the other parts of the body with not so much important details?. You really need to study more perspective, flatness ruins it :/

The helmest i belive are the strongest are 12,13,14, my favourite is 12 though, you could make even more helmets, i think you can push it to make something even cooler.

On your monster, you where doing really really good but somehow you managed to flatten it, try to keep those nice values there, the third picture is perfect, but then you inserted more alike values there and made it look flat.

Keep working man, i really like your designs skills.

awesome concepts bro! Loving the way you render the last one, really shows
improvement. maybe the foot section is a bit flat and the part beneath its
head should be more shaded to give more depth, but it's really tiny things
that doesn't really matter :) nice work mate, would love to see it finished
