hey folks. just came back from the middle of france. a fabulous place where i hang out sometimes with my family. a large castle lost in the forest. did a lot of sketches of this area, but i don't know where they are. did a few new ones during the three last days. (my rooms are on the second floor ... :D)

did that crappy sketch with my kid squeaking around. it's plain aweful, but at least we see a bit more of it... forgive me for posting this one, but it belongs to the same bunch.

What a surprise! Sparth can´t just work with PS but with a pencil either :D.
Really nice sketches. How long did it take for you to draw one? I´m just curious, I always like to know how lame I am myself ;).

thanx peeps!
fipse: i think i must have passed around 40 minutes on a sketch. it's not that short to be honest. the longest one must have been around 1 hour i suppose. :D

excellent! i also love your pencil work. you have such great pattern, rhythm and confidence.
could you scan in your arsenal of tools, pencils, different pencil points (if you indeed make various points to your leads). what i am interested in is how you use your pencils and how much care you take in manipulating the tip to achieve certain effects.
please!

Thanks, that´s helping me - I tend to take too few time for sketching "life-environment" and it´s good to know how long someone needs to get this pleasant results.

jon, i'm gonna do that as soon as i get home. it's a very interesting idea. i have bought a new interesting pencil two weeks ago, a very nice tool, large leads. i also use a pilot 2020 0.5 SHAKER.
i also often use a serie of derwent graphic pencils in 9b (yes!! 9b). but this new tool i bough tends to replace my traditionnal pencils for a time.
two sorts of erasers, but as i don't have anything in front of me, i'll tell you more at home, and scan the things. :D
souvenirs.... while i lived in singapore around 85, i had a taiwanese friend who used to draw a lot with this pilot shaker 1010. that tool was fabulous, i promised to myself that i was going to find that pen as soon as possible. and i found it.
the thing is: for peeps who may not know, these shaker pens were pretty new at that time, impossible to find in europe before the 90s. only in asia and in japan. or maybe in the states too. and it's damn useful, not moving your hand on the pencil in order to make the lead go out by clicking on the tip. i still have this original pen. they costed something like 20 dollars at that time, which was quite huge.
the actual pilot 2020 is much lighter, less quality, but it costs around 3 dollars or something. anyway, yea i guess i realise i was quite attached to these damn tools!
jester: ty! :D

jon (& all), here it is.
from left to right.
1 - first of all, i use regular 3b pencils, no matter the mark, even though sometimes the smoothness of the 3b or 6b or 9b leads may enormously vary from on mark to another.
2 - derwent graphic pencils. i love these. they're very smooth, very pleasant. don't know why, i could not find any 9b pencils in my small pen box tonight, but i mainly use 9b. i'm even reluctant sometimes to use 3b. i guess that it's because years after years, i'm more attracted by nervous representation. going straight to the point that is. harder pencils have a more negative aspect to my eyes, mainly because they make me think about structure and construction. i guess that after having studied and drawed object by finding its structures, the aim is to discover the same objects by its spirit, or its soul. i suppose it is only possible after having discovered perspective, and general structure.
3 - pilot "twist action / refillable" CROQUIS 6b. they sell it with different leads, but you can put whatever you want in it i suppose. i use it with 6b only. a marvelous tool, it allows you to change the lead for your own needs. in order to do so, i take an alternate sheet of paper, and i "crush" or rather "use" the lead on the paper in order to obtain a larger surface on the lead. i work with two opposed but mixed philosophies in mind. lines and surface. this tool is of course used for the surface. no possibilities to be precise with such a large lead. around 4 millimeters of diameter, i guess.
i'm having a lot of pleasure using that tool. you gain time filling your surfaces compared to a regular soft pencil. still, i use soft pencils often in order to do the same, it's just that this funky tool is new, and i like it.
4 - auto eraser - i guess that it's a pilot, but the writing has disapeared long ago. very interesting eraser, very precise. i have been using this eraser for nearly 10 years.
5 - pilot 2020 - 0,5 the opposite tool compared to CROQUIS 6b. i use it strictly for the line, no surface. or sometimes i use line rythmes in order to put more details in areas. but mainly, it is the complementary tool compared to that "surface tool" i use, or even compared to my regular pencils.
6 - 7 - leads for both tools. 0,5 as usual.
8 - maped eraser. now this tool is vital for me, as it allows me to not only erase forms, but also very precise lines, when necessary. that eraser is flat. you can once again grab a sheet of paper, and change the eraser's tip on both sides in order to obtain an amazing "eraser knife" capable of doing unbelievable white lines on previously drawn surfaces. you can even cut the thing for even more personnal needs.
the other sort of eraser i use is called "gomme mie de pain" in french. an eraser that has the form or some chewing gum, or a blob (lol). these blob erasers i have are so old, 8 years for some of them. i did not scan that is it ressembles to a black blob, nothing else. also, the two erasers i use here have replaced it for good, i believe.
there it is, i hope this small explanation will be a bit interesting. i should try to show a bit more what tool is useful for what parts on a specific drawing. but heck, you know that already, that's a sure fact!

Thanks sparth! That must have taken a while to get all your thoughts together on that and to post it all and stuff. Thanks so much man its really helpful! I am jealous of the area you live in as well...if I truly wanted to capture Philadelphia...I would draw a huge trash heap...grocery bags blowing in the wind. You have captured these areas beautifully...makes my day sitting in my cubicle a lot better!

:chug: cheers sparth, I love these pencil sketches, your sense of composition really appeals to me and the way you've achieved such character with minimal detail is something to be admired. that info on your materials was also very helpful.. I've been looking for an eraser that does fine lines as well as having some of the qualities of putty eraser or 'nudge' as I call it :) that maped gom stick sounds like it could be just the thing.
looking forward to seeing more of these. :)

Well I'm glad for one thing sparth...I'm glad you didn't get shot when you visited here. There is some nice architecture here...I just need a chain for my walette so no one steals it and then I can feel confident drawing the buildings in downtown.

Incredible stuff!
I just wanted to thank you for the inspiration and pointing out Derwent Graphic Pencils... they are by far the best pencils I've ever used.
Amazing!
