View Full Version : anyone else been hit with lots of 1 star ratings?

Me, like many others including Dile, Wolfbane, Dirty C, Magic Man, Mentler, Koshime,Demented just to name a few have been poorly rated down with one star votes, changing a 5 star rating to 4 or 4-3 or along those lines.
ok, im not angry, but i was, because it makes you feel bad about your work and so on, but there are plenty others who got angry
I was rated 1 star several times by a few different people, and its annoying the hell out of me.
thoughts?
I reckon there are several options, ditch the stars, change the meanings or go for a maximum of 10 stars
OH JUST FORGET THIS THREAD, everyone hates me for it.
Just ignore

It's not the fact that 1 star is voted that pisses me off - it's that it's not explained. Whoever just comes in, sees something, votes 1 and buggers off.
Ratings is a great system and gives everyone something to work for, but abusing the system like this isn't helping anyone. It's pretty discouraging building up your rating to like 4.48 and then suddenly have it drop way down when 5 stars were so close.
anyway, banning isn't the answer, and the votes should stay anonymous imo, just leave them be coz anyone who is determined will get 5 stars regardless - no need to fuss over something so trivial really.........
just my 2c :D

youve got a good point, but i was voted 1 star like 5 times and it put my rating down like half a star from 3.43 to 3.11
i know its only trivial, and it really doesnt matter, but its like losing a bunch of money, it just makes you feel bad

Recursive_End
August 23rd, 2006, 08:11 AM
Well imo it doesnt really matters.
Cause 1) ratings arent the best way to actually juge someone, so it's not a few decimals that would really influence someone at looking at your sb.
2) There isnt always nice people on earth. so deal with it. What doesnt kiils you makes you stronger.
Actually it's a good reason to work harder and eventually lateron have lots of credits.

maybe tweak it so everyone's allowed to vote again a month later.
this will prevent the old sketchbooks with 5 from getting twinked because the regulars will keep giving the 5 stars.
but i'm of the position of just ignoring it. it won't kill you to have 1 less star. if you keep putting up quality work in FF then neither should you be afraid that employers won't see your stuff.

Im not sure thats a great idea people could just voted themselves up periodically and it wouldn't create a true average of opinion.

I took the star-rating for fast evaluating a thread when I havenīt had the time to give a crit (and I hate to post "just awesome" stuff) but gave it up because it really doesnīt matter - Iīm more with strych9ine here and am now of the opinion that we could simply give it up. A good or bad crit is imo much more constructive. There are other ways to stroke your ego ...

I deleted my post earlier because it was a little, say, confrontational. I'll just truncate what I said before, remove the f-bombs, and leave a friendly "suck it up, buttercup." There will always be guys who vote negatively whenever they can, even on the best of threads, and a whiny ass thread like this is only going to open the floodgates.

Don't agree with that Barts (hope I understood right). There is absolutely no way Mentler's work for instance - decades of experience - is possibly worth 1 star, especially when everyone else rates it either 4 or mostly 5. In fact, it destroys any "accuracy".
Looks like whoever is just voting to bring the rating down. No worries though, lots of other peeps around doing a great job of not only rating, but most importantly giving crits and advice - which is, after all, the point of these forums.
EDIT: Just read strych9ine's post: good point dude, whining about a bunch of whiners won't fix anything. BACK TO ART!

Get over it. As simple as that.
The star system is far from perfect, and has needed changing for ages now, and nothing has been done about it.
I don't agree with someone going around voting everyone 1 star, but who say's it's just one guy. And to be honest the 1 star is there, if someone wants to vote that, it's up to them, at their discrection. No one has to post the reason why they voted one star.
And also, why the HELL is 1 star "terrible" or whatever it is. Since when has 1 star been terrible. 1 star should be "good", 2 stars should be "great", 3 stars should be "fantastic", 4 stars should be "awesome", and 5 stars should be "pro" or something. It's just fucked up and I'm suprised it's still the same as it's alwasy been.
Back to the thread, it's all relative to each member anyway, i've seen plenty of 5 stars thread that should be 4, and vice versa.
Pointless thread...

GODDAMNIT! A ******* click and all I've written is gone. I hate you, fingernails!
1. Who cares about stars? I never use them to determine which thread I'll open up. I mean, why should I let someone else tell me what to watch? Those stars are anti-constructive and I'd vote to remove them at any chance. The good art gets hyped, the bad art gets drowned. Working your way up by getting hyped is natural, but in this case no one sees the bad art and leaves it behind.
2. As stated before, a rating-system where you can choose between "good" and "very good" isn't a rating system. It's penis-enlargement without spam-mails.
3. Stop whining! Have you thought of the chance that someone really thought your art wasn't worth 1 star? Get over it.
Working your way up in a group of people thinking they are cool is always hard. There are no exceptions. Jesus had to be pinned on a piece of wood to be accepted (this is not an invention for selfmutilation! :D Just in case someone wants to sue me because some kid got pinned on a piece of wood by his younger brother cause he received 2 stars for his art).

i agree with cartoonfox... since when is having only a few stars on CONCEPTART.ORG a bad thing? :S
i understand about wanting explinations, but the same could be said for all the threads that are high rated given to people with no work experience or... ability to work. no offense is meant by this, just that... a lot of 4 stars i've seen are not on the level one needs to be to work professionally in this field.
edit- not to say any who are mentioned aren't worthy... just that it seems more of a 'i rated you so rate me' type thing. instead of ability.
of course if the rating is for overall progress and such, then that changes my view on it since there are tons well worthy then.

Is seeing comments like "stop writing what you write", "shut up", " you can't write what you want to write, I want you to write only what I want", any kind of intolerance to other person different way of thinking than yours. If you are not mod, skip other person writing if is not digestible to you. More tolerance to the world, people! Let 100 flowers bloom, really!

If you are more concerned with stars than your own drawing time...i think that there is something wrong. Inherently we are all the same striving for the same goal. My belief is that sketchbooks are good for 2 things - Crits from other people and a reminder to yourself to keep going and keep striving to journey farther along the path.
Star ratings to me are just another way to make your ego a little bigger...and in this business that seems to be what defeats you most.
-TeT-
(edit) - perhaps if we changed the star rating to an automatic rating system. Like you get higher stars the more volume of work you produce? Perhaps a personal motivational tool ?

Most people defense to this situation is " don´t mind the stars", but then I won´t be the first to say : Why not remove the star rating??
I would be lying if I said it doesn´t mess with my head one way or another, tho I can pretend to not be affected by some rating, but we all know that is BS.....humans care about how other humans think about them.
I can see how it was intended as a system to motivate people, but the abuse of it is getting the opposite, specially in young amateur artists.
Not everyone has an already solid career to be able to reasure that they are not going backwards.
Just an opinion ;).

Two very insightfull posts, Shamagim, and the one by Rascar. Stars are great for measuring your progress, and gives pretty much everyone something to work for. Think it might be cool if the only the mods get to vote - that way things stay pretty fair all the way.
And of course getting crits and having fun is more important, but having some guy come along, voting 1 and then going away doesn't help with either of those. It's like getting told "You are waaayyy OVERRATED" regardless of what your rating is when all is said and done.
Anyways, just more 2c.

Heh I find it funny that we got stars, and then people complained about them so they were taken away. Then there was a slow build of people suggesting a star rating system. So it was reinstated to lots of clapping and "hooray CA!".
And the cycle continues.
If anyone wants to know a good example of why star type rating systems don't work, you only have to look at Craig Mullin's website www.goodbrush.com

The first time i got voted down from 5 to 4 it almost made me stop updating (this is a long time ago and like i said im used to it now - im more surprised when my rate goes up instead of down, lol). People who think its motivating to rate other people down are idiots IMO. There is nothing motivating about it. Crits are great and we all got alot to learn and the fact that most of these downvoters never or very rare give any reason to why they do it makes it very hard to take them seriously. But oh well - its the internet...I guess, what i really dont understand is why you would give a bad vote to someone - i mean wtf do you get out it? A sence you are doing something good for this forum? Oh, now im boring myself...:rendered:

i said it once and i say it again = A rating-sys where you actually have to give a comment why you are voting that much stars you have chosen to vote would solve the problem quite fine...of course with the possibility to report unwanted ratings (NOT the possibility to delete them yourself of course...)

Your compaining about a lowered rating because your getting one star votes? WAHHHH! Someone should change your diapers you big baby... grow up.
Maybe these one star votes should get your ass in gear to produce kick-ass work so instead of your rating dropping, jaws will drop instead. Now get back to work.
jeez man, no need to be rude, if you have nothing constructive to say, say nothing at all!
Its just a shock, working your way up, then BOOM, it feels like youve gone backwards.
Im totally over it, and drawing as i usually do.
Hey, it messes with your mind when your a young artist, and your largely pretty new with the whole thing.
For some, they can get a dozen 5 star rates to match their 1 star rate.
Nevermind, Its just that, well you dont have to be a dick 'bout it

hmmm....crit week and this conversation is somehow more pointed and focused...to shame. Members can only vote once. To get a one star rating it will take a number of people to vote that. Ten I believe.
:)
To those who are doing votes to be mean (this thread excluded as it's one star made me smile pretty big...you buggers!), I will go in and check the database to see who voted. If I catch someone being an asshole I will ban them. I will not, however, go looking at the request of those getting one star..I dont have time for that. But I will take a look. If you are doing such things to people...STOP. Your days of asshole behavior are at an end here. Comprende?
