I’m learning to paint in oils, and I would like to know who else in these parts uses oil paints, so that I can take a peek at your work and learn from you how to better use the medium. So, oil painters, raise your hands and show me your work!

My oil-painting experiments are in my sketchbook thread. The link is in my sig. . .

There are a bunch of folks here who work partially or exclusively in oils (myself included). Do a search for "oil" in Finally Finished (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/search.php?searchid=1762078) and see what comes up.

Wow, I’m surrounded by amazing artists! You know, I had completely forgotten what it feels like to be a n00b. :-) I’m not worthy!

Thanks Elwell, I will do that search! (Your website is full of great information, by the way. And not to mention the great art. Holy cow, one of my favorite paintings from Spectrum is in there! *boggle*)

A question for you all: what books or websites or other resources would you recommend to a beginning oil painter? There is so much that I don’t know about the materials, in particular. And about the ways that different artists have used the medium. I know a little – I took two semesters of oil painting in college - but would like to know more.

I need to go do my daily painting now, followed by some house-rearranging to deal with the wet paintings that are scattered around the living room. If anyone has suggestions for living with oil paints in a small home, I would love to hear it. Currently, my “studio” consists of a table and chair crammed behind the sofa, and my plan is to set up a shelf in the bathroom for paintings to dry on, to keep the oil smell minimized in the living-room.

Dave – Ooh, shiny! It looks like it is available in soft-cover for $50 here: http://www.richardschmid.com/book.html I’ll probably buy it after I sleep on it. :-) (Twitch, twitch, want the shiny new book NOW!)

Allejo – thanks for the link and the book recommendation! About paint “jumping” – haha! I know what you mean. I am so far succeeding at being fastidious with the paints. I paint with latex gloves on, and I now have a shelf set up in the downstairs bathroom to hold all fume-emitting sources when not in use. And by virtue of over-gunking a rag on my lap, I now have a designated set of oil-painting clothes. :-P

Flake – Ooh, interesting! Thanks for the links. What are Loomis books?

Google Andew Loomis, Seedking and you will see why he is considered a God on this website. Pretty much he was a teacher and an amazing part time illustrator who released quite a few books on how to paint, draw, and illustrate. Most of his books are incredibly expensive so downloading the pdfs ae def well worth it.
