View Full Version : DSG 1106: Sci-Fantasy: FAMILY DRIVES THROUGH THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL SAFARI PARK

[ I hope you get the idea here... ]
[ Picture those terrestrial safari parks where people drive their cars slowly through, enjoying the up-close experience of nature's creations, and hoping that the apes don't smear filth on the windshield. ]
[ That sort of thing, except that the creatures wandering the plains aren't from Earth. ]

Here's mine... About an hour and a half. Done, again, in "tiza pastel" and charcoal...

Crystilline Methane based extraterrestrial life seemed alot more interesting and exciting in the brochure, but after a few hours, it just seems so repetative.

Hi everyone. I'm new here and this is my first DSG. I'm also new to Corel Painter so I spent too much time trying out lots of different brushes instead of concentrating on composition and a focal point. I had fun though.
Hope to become a regular. :)

The Pettersons slowly hovering by a couple of nocturnal, fluorescent, blobulonian heliamoths. Photoshop, waaay to long.

"Hey, mom! Look! Sigourney Weaver!"
Machzero - Hahah at the tripods. The colors appear as blotches of average watercolors - but your concepts and angle are dominant. The child on the left appears as thought he's wearing a glove. Nice contribution.
Goran - Classic. Extremely unexpected interpretation. The red and yellow colors cover the safari area. I dislike comical science fiction visuals but this one back to the future galaxy exploration. Haven't seen you in the DSG's in awhile, update me on any new stuff.
Frostsnake - Took me a second to realize there were a series of volcanos erupting in the backround. You know this needs work. A suggestion for the final version (If you decide to complete it) would be to create a sense of power under the wasp-like creature near the volcanoes. Like the back of a rocket, air blowing towards the ground would be an effective detail.
Hergo - Not bad. The families heads are funny. I can't read the text on the back of the chair - draw it clearer. It's similar to goran's now that I'm beginning to observe the purple themes.
Hamsta - Looks like that Snowman skiing game I remember playing a long time ago. Decent image.
Horsefly - I like that chairlift idea. Smoothen the brush tones on those beiche rocks, add a water effect, and allow light to filter in through the canopies. Then you're set.
Crustacean - Is that a giant fish head crying while an underwater subway casually passes beneath the surface? Please explain.
Surfacemonkey - Reminds me the scene in Jurassic Park where the safari jeep is being chased by the Tyrannasaurus Rex. I like the warped backround, you could have lightened the shades of purple on the creature to give it an uneven solidity of hue.
Sandworm - Ahh, the magic schoolbus childrens books! I remember them now - it's been so long. Thanks for takin' me back. The insect's eyes are accurately designed. I can tell that this was a quick one before you had to go. The schoolbus could be sharpened and you could darken the insect's wings. At first glance, I thought it was a parade display. Then the wobbly rope bridge school children stranded in a universal galaxy scenario kicked in. Keep doing you
Mr. Digs - Best presentation so far. That banner is fun to look at. The main problem about this that prevents it from being an excellent entry is the inside of the car, which includes the man's face and the roof of the vehicle. Like that little alien sign.
Chaosrocks - Seahorse dragon? What I've noticed about you around the forum is that you're consistant with participating in art activities, but as an artist, you're not improving when it comes to advancing a level. Spend more time on each individual piece. You'd break barriers with the right time given.
Good job, everyone. Hit me up anytime.

Vulgar`: Just stopped by to see if a new topic had been posted yet, but nice to see someone take time out to crit' entries. I'm kinda new here but this is the sort of stuff I was hoping for. I couldn't agree with you more regarding your comments about my entry, but again, I thank you for taking the time to post your comments about all the entries. Prop's due! :}

Horsefly, your theme park looks more like a feeding frenzy. (tehehehe ^_^ ) Composition was rarely taught in French academies. I think it is important, but it is not the most important aspect of a piece. I've seen some pretty crazy compositions that work fine. Welcome to the DSG. You'll learn alot here from everyone, I know I do. :)
Oh...one trick for composition is to find the focal point of the piece, and put it dead center in the middle of the canvas. Bouguereau did this alot. You'll find clasping hands in the dead center of his pieces sometimes, or a boob....(!!!)

Vulgar - Thanks ! Appreciate the crit, think maybe i should've used some ref for the car, and the man too. I've got a nasty habit of trying to draw things how i think they look instead of just looking at the real thing and working from there. Had the usual problems with perspective and angles on this one.

Yo vulgar! Here are some sketches (http://www.j-stengade.dk/1106_sketchsheet.jpg) that may help you understand. And I agree that my submission is a bit on the dark/incomprehensible side.
But "a fishhead crying"? Jeez, Louise!
