hmm. Im in highschool too. The key is to draw like a maniac every day...the people who post work daily are good simply because they draw that often. Keep at it!

I also suggest pushing the darks. Have you checked out Kchen's head demos? I think they'd help you out. they're in the tutorials section. Take a look at the planes of the head. Imagine it in 3D. That, and practice a lot, just study, take a look at shadow shapes, and the way light describes a form. :)

To get used to dark values, I took some drawings, and darkened the darkest area as much as I could with a very soft pencil. Then I worked on the other areas and tried to make them fit to this very dark place.
You can see an example in the middle class cast drawing thread.

Hi Kids.
Nold - Yeah.. i guess thats a good way to force the mind, will def keep in mind next time in handling the graphites
Rockit - I'll prob find some head things over the summer, those and my mom for some queer reason is buying anatomy books for quilting.. so. i think shes secretly an artist in training or something.. anywho. still ma, gotta love her
Onto new business
My only color piece in drawing class. And its the last for the school year. I took a digital photo of it, and i uh have much more black and white of different kinds of media to come tongiht or tmrw
This was an environment pastel piece.. with use of diagonal feathering. Its intended to be frank lloyd wright's falling waters.. a lil abstract of cuorse and i was doin the complimentary blue/orange scheme for the most part. rushed it to about 45 minutes.. im a slow dude most of the time. that time includes teacher distractions , flirting with girls etc etc. :D

crits welcome. but not really looking to change anything. if thats even possible. but i wouldnt.
One question while im thinking of it... Is there anyway to seal/preserve pastel or charcoal pieces over time.. ? thanks

You can seal them with crystal clear. It's a spray can that seal's your stuff, like charcoal, or pastel. I suggest getting the matte finish. Or if you're broke and want to go the cheap way, use hairspray, I've heard that works too. About your piece, good job on it. I've only tried charcoal here and there, and its pretty hard. One crit, more of a suggestion really, if you do another one of these, concentrate on where the edges of two different objects meet. I know you were, and it was a rush job, but I mention it, cuz there's some spots where things loose a bit of focus.

Hey,
Iwasink - Stop changing ur name on me! lol. yeah thanks. definately the biggest flaw was the combination of rushing nd having to doa diagonal feather, made things really sketchy
i scanned the majority of my completed self portrait in two parts. so theres the obvious seam, but deal with it:)
EDIT EDIT EDIT old crap. removed.
more art to come soon, then sketching as well.. ahh cant wait to get in the mode, soon enough
i also sent out a catalog request to ringling. if that works?! hell if i know.. but i suppose im gonna have to get the art college attention myself cuz the board that sells ur name off has me down for some other occupation. so anywho. yea. anxious to get in the whole college deal.. sorta . :) peace - ry

I love the Fallingwater sketch! The color scheme is beautiful!
One thing that might help in your portrait drawing... In the first post, his face is a very front-on view, while the top of his head looks like you're looking down at almost a 45 degree angle... you can see too much of the hair. Hope that makes sense :)

Love the 6-12 picture. Its great:D You must have patience to use pastels.
The rest are pretty good too. I agree with the above post though about the head.:) Nice work

Yeah this is what im workin on in Portfolio Drawing 1... or wait what i finished yesterday
the lighter tones in the top left are due to sunlight not my stupidity... its meant to be a behind the back gesture... the thumb and pinki are only like that to fulfill the requirements of the assignment... the metaphor can be what u like. obviously theres one i tell ppl and then one i keep to myself. lol. gbye. crits welcome.
Truth never tells itself.
