William of Ornshelm - Scottish Dandy
It's been said that the reason Scotsmen wear kilts is because sheep are afraid of the sound of a zipper. But putting that aside, William of Ornshelm wasn't like other scotsmen of the highlands. He had a bent for fashion that went -beyond- kilts. Some of his creations were downright wild! The men never could quite bring themselves to wear William's creations, but one or two of the women were bold enough to try.
Now... concept! :yayca:
THX Tavarilyn for the suggestion.
We will keep the to the topics from the suggestion thread for a while.

Hmm, brings to mind Tim Roth's character in the movie "Rob Roy" - But a lot more flamboyant. That was a dandy who could kick some a$$.
I don't think I'm up for this one - but I can't wait to see what you guys come up with.

Chuck W: Good call on Tim Roth there I think. Me and my brother just discussed this subject and we both talked about Tim Roth in Rob Roy and said he was the best example of one we could think of right of the bat.

I hereby officially claim the phrase "Lord of the Nance!"
Here he is putting the "tart" in tartan:
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l290/urchin8r/_Urchin_chow38_macdandey.jpg
Sir William of Ornshelm didn't quite work out as the tailor for the royal guard. Luckily for William, the Lady of Ornshelm rather took to the uniforms the kings men deemed too flashy for the battlefield and he spent the rest of his career establishing the Queen and her Ladies in Waiting as the most fashionable courtesans at any royal gathering.

Lord of the Nance. And here I thought I'd heard them all.
Well, then I'm going to respond by saying that "tartan is the new black and plaid is the new neutral."
There's nothing in the description that says this character isnt modern, right? I want to make him a modern fashion designer type....

When William became tired of Scottish colors, he decided that Ireland was the new Scotland. He worried that the public would think Irish colors would make them less of Scotsmen, so in his marketing campaign he was shown standing proud over the Irish leprachaun.

William of Ornshelm takes traditional Scottish fashion to an 80's extreme with his New New Wave line for Spring. This Scottish dandy found his calling on the runways of Paris modelling occassionally for Jean Paul Gaultier in his Madonna-dressing, Vogue days. Now in his 40's, William insists his designs are meant to cross the boundaries of gender and age. This paper-doll advert was a big splash in British Vogue this month. What will Willie think of next?

Hmmmm. And yet, the wiki aritcle you cite mentions some pretty famous flamboyant homosexuals (Quentin Crisp, Andy Warhol...). I think one could argue that not all dandies are flamboyant homosexuals... however, most flamboyant homosexuals use the art and artifice of clothing, fashion, aesthetics as a part of that flamboyant persona. In fact, I can't really think of any flamboyant homosexuals who arent really in the dandy column as well.
Then again, we went round and round with this when Metrosexual Pirate was the topic.
Ah well.

I think this part of the description is what prompted a lot of us to go with high heels. Something that most dudes wouldnt wear that the ladies would.

William of Ornshelm was indeed the king of fashion. His idea was that it was more important to look good then to feel good. His styles were intricate in detail and his colors where subtle unlike the deeper and darker traditional scottish colors.

William was always teased as a child for being "unique". He didn't wrestle with the other boys. Instead, he combed the sheep and mended his own clothes. He also refused to eat anything to do with animals. Being a master huntsman, his father did not take kindly to this and thus disowned poor William from the clan. William was left to wander the world alone. In his travels, he came across new fashion styles and new materials. Years later, William returns to Ornshelm in a very "unique" manner....

i'm looking at everyone elses...and then i'm looking at mine, and I'm wondering if i'm doing something wrong? hehe. what is everyone using to colour? i've been using Photoshop CS for quite sometime, applying new techniques i've learned from the internet and yet I don't seem to be improving much. It takes me so long to colour as well. I'm not sure why...
anyways. this is as complete as i can do it, without my brain exploding

Still have alot to learn, so any crits or comments would be very helpful. Thanks!

(Long description. Bear with me!)
William of Ornshelm was known for his prowess on the battlefield, where no foe could match him. Which is probably the only reason he could get away with wearing what he wore. You see William also had a fondness for fashion. As a child William was a quiet kid who wore the most bizarre and peculiar outfits. But because of his size, no one questioned him, and William never felt he had to explain. He just did what he was compelled to do. His creations sometimes came on a whim, or other times, served a purpose, usually known only to William. His most notable and memorable creation was given birth on none other than the battlefield. In the middle of a bloodbath, William's kilt became tangled up between his legs, nearly costing him his life. After returning home victoriously, William went straight home, emerging sometime later the next day. To everyone's surprise and horror, William had trimmed off more than half of his kilt, leaving little to the imagination. The men were disgusted, and the women all blushed. But it was in that blush that a legacy was born. Behold the mini kilt. In time, William's new creation grew in popularity among women, who learned the benefits of less attire. And the men who scoffed him before, began thanking him for his contribution to society and history. And so thanks to William of Ornshelm, we have the glorious wonder that we know today as.....the mini skirt.

Hello, CA! I've been lurking for a quite some time but this is my first real post ever. *grins*
Mostly watercolor with some color pencil and a bit of digital thrown in there (the tartan and plaid textures... I couldn't bear to NOT "cheat" on this one!)

Its hard to say daylight, can you tell us a little more about how you work? Like do you work with layers, what brush type, opacity levels, etc. Overall i would work on stronger contrast. You have placed your light source, but you're working with all middle range values, high saturation, with some extreme blacks where there are creases and such. Try expanding the use of values so you're using the full spectrum, imo. Helps?

Gaustaferro:
There's no short answer to all of your questions. In sum I've been waffling between digital/traditional for years as kind of a jack of all trades and master of none. I'm looking forward to specializing in one of them, however, and each day brings me closer to really throwing myself back into the traditional stuff again. I did learned a lot from this particular project, though, including a few new Photoshop tips.
This is how far I got with the first digital version of this before I finally took the switch to traditional media.
http://www.calicopaisley.com/temp/sketch__scottishdandy6.jpg
I worked on this Tuesday - Thursday, felt frustrated with it Friday, and that's when I started over. Probably the main reason why the finish is still a little underdeveloped.
As for the final that I posted, however. That was a lot easier than it looks. The kilt I found a random pattern by Googling for it, changed the hues for the bright colors (that sure as hell ain't no traditional clan pattern right there :D ) and then proceded to warp the crap out of it using the various transform functions. There was a similar procedure for the stockings.
Thank you for the crits. :)

LOL. Calico, theres a mistake, those crits were for Daylight. He was asking earlier about what he could do to make his better. :bashful:
I was just letting you know that i was enjoying yours! Sorry about the confusion! But i must say i do prefer your digital (minus the background :P) It has alot of life that gets lost in the transition to the lighter values of your traditional. Both are very fun tho!

I'm trying to decide if using solid-colour layer masks are better at colouring than what I usually do: making the line work set as Multiply and colouring underneath it on different layers.
I select spaces using the magic wand and then a hard-edge brush at 100% to block in colour. I then take it down to 40% to apply shadows or the burn tool at 90%.
What is a middle range value? What's a high range value? Lighter/darker colours, I'm guessing?
guastaferro
August 21st, 2006, 05:07 PM
yes, the lightness/darkness of color. The thing is, theres alot of techniques that people will swear by with digital painting. Im only just getting going, but what i do is have my line drawing set on multiply, and color on a layer underneath, adding additional layers as needed. Im using Goro's brushes right now (thanks Goro!) You can download them here. I lay down 100% solid foundation color, then continue adding lighter and darker values. But it seems like you prefer a more cell shaded look. Bengal has a really good tutorial here somewhere that you should check out, dont know where it is though >:|
