View Full Version : Open Illustration Challenge: Mythological re-imaginings

N D Hill
August 14th, 2006, 10:30 PM
The challenge is to illustrate a famous scene from ancient mythos and/or folk legend. The choice for source material is open as long as it can be verified. So anything from ancient greek, norse, japanese, chinese, native american etc. is fair game.

That is all.

shit, very interesting challenge...exo's looks very good.Davi, your is very good too, but maybe i would have avoided all that noise in the light area, maybe it could use some blur.

this challenge is waaaaaaaay to hard for me :D

EDIT:actually, just realized you gave a really short deadline for such an illustration IMHO, i would extend it ;)

Don't let a little technicality stop you. I decided that there really wasn't much point to enforcing a deadline when there was so much interest but so few who could actually turn something out due to busy schedules. In fact, if a moderator were to see this thread, perhaps they could move this thread to the community activities section? Anyway, post'em if you got'em.

KaWaii
August 24th, 2006, 08:08 AM
WOOT ! So it's not over yet? :D

I can still make something? :D

Anyway, Exo, a deadline is needed if you don't want a total chaos.
However, you can extent it of course...

chaosrocks

I dunno... make like the Dragon thread and just leave it open for folks to see. I have about 6 scenes I want to work on. these are fun.
C&C as we go along..

the Birth of the minotuar is very amazing... altough, Brthing something that largge would actualy be more bloody...but maybe his half divinity helped out. and actually I suppose if she were able to have sex with agod in the form of a bull .... I contemplaated doing the other ende of that story Ariadne sleeping abandodned by Theseus for her debauchery...may still after I finish Persephone

Exo- Nicely rendered, I looks like you had more fun withthe Grendell than with beowulF, Im having a little trouble making sense of beowulf' head. I think to strain enough to ripp of an arm it might be thrown back as a counter balance.....beside the critters has got to smell really bad.....:P... and it would make the composition a little pmore dynamic and a little less static.

truszart- I can accept the Cyclops but the Medusa was a beautiful woman with hair of snakes.....she thought the heros coming to see here were lovers and was confused when they turned to stone. Probabble a symbolic tale containing relics of the old snake worshiping earth mother religion.....more than you wanted to know Im sure....

Light-- image has potential...but I was not aware that valkyrie rode wolves.....finish it?

Chaosrocks- Finish that , or at least shut up and get to work.

Octothreat- seems a little strange in the angle I would concider cropping the pic down so that we are focused on the scene and moving Odyssus a nd Leukothea closer so that there is more dynamic tension between them.

Keep em coming folks I love these!

Persian Mythology: The gods Tishtrya and Apaosha

http://www.artiphats.com/artwork/mytho_painting_web1.jpg

"Tishtrya goes down to the cosmic ocean in the form of a white horse with golden ears and trappings, where he meets Apaosha the demon of drought, as a black horse. They fight for three days and at first Apaosha is victorious and drought prevails on the earth. However, Trishtrya appeals to Ahura Mazda, who feeds him with sacrafices and so makes him strong. He overcomes Apaosha and the rains flow again."

Tishtrya = Rain God
Apaosha = Demon of Drought
Ahura Mazda = All embracing sky, the Supreme God
